Burton auditioned me at Berklee (1970) and I wasn't much of a mallet player. I didn't really have a set of vibes mallets. After the audition, Gary gave me his which I have till this day. What an amazing man, player and teacher. He has influenced so much of well, music in general. He really was one of the greatest musicians I ever had contact with. Amazing!

EventfulHorizon Its all about whatever feels most comfortable to you, but in marching band, I would do what your instructer tells you to be more uniform with everyone else.

Magnificent performance. My compliments to the audio-engineers behind this too; the microphones catch all the details, and the left-right balance is very, very nice. You hear the whole keyboard of the vibraphone traveling from your left to your right ear.

it's a bit offputting when the camera is looking at the vibraphone sideways though

Thanks thanks thanks. Beautiful. No one can play like this, with such that mixture of intelligence and musicality. Bravo Gary. I'm so glad to have you as a teacher at Berklee back in the 80 's.

Oh, thank you....does this take me back: Terry Gibbs, Vibes on Velvet, and of course the amazing Mr. Burton..My father (bless his heart) went to Juilliard on the GI Bill. He played vibraphone and drums, majoring in percussion. His vibe set was, I recall clearly... deep coppery gold color, and as a kid, I loved to watch him plug it in, as the little fan underneath would start whirling. When he played, I saw his hands holding the mallets; I would help him wrap them with yarn, producing that wonderful full, echoing... plunky, plunk sound. Richer than plain wood marimba but, ever so distinct. The vibes reminded me of 18 karat gold jewelry. When he died, his shimmery vibe sets were donated to a music school in his town..

Deaganexpress, I like your response to HaHoo as it is very appropriate. Gary Burton, what a magnificent talent. So musical, great technique and command of the vibes and all of the music from within that one could hope for. If there were any mistakes I couldn't hear them. I don't believe he clammed any notes at all and he plays all over the vibe. Just beautiful!

@Smuffish I use the "burton like" grip, and I often use the two inside mallets to play two mallets parts. My teacher always use the 2 and 4, but I feel more confortable using 2 and 3. I'll check on the internet how Gary Burton justify this.

.... Not sure if you knew this and I may just be making an idiot out of my self... but this is Gary Burton, and he's playing with Burton grip, the grip he designed. Cross grip and traditional grip are slightly different from Burton.
@williamyoung30704 жыл бұрын
His early 70's solo record Alone At Last remains a jaw dropping masterpiece. The only flaw in that recording is that is was done by Atlantic - they didn't really understand the instrument and how to ideally capture its sound. Thankfully, the task of properly recording Burton was later embraced by Manfred Eicher.

He INVENTED The Burton Grip, and you obviously don't even know enough about percussion to understand that multiple grips exist, and yet you're going to rag on a professional?
@majoritarian78644 жыл бұрын
Connor S. He did not invent the Burton grip. Throughout his whole career, he’s been trying to dispel that “rumor”, because it doesn’t give the actual creators credit, so don’t speak about things that you obviously don’t even know enough about!
@TheKillersnake74 жыл бұрын
Anthzy 101 IIRC he did invent the Burton grip, but the Burton grip was not the first four-mallet technique invented. So he took the existing approach and changed it, creating the Burton grip. But I don’t think this matters, I think we can all agree that Burton is one of the if not the most important and influential vibraphone players of modern time
@majoritarian78644 жыл бұрын
Killersnake he did not invent the Burton grip. You can look it up. There are even lots of clips on KZbin of him himself saying he didn’t invent it, he just popularized it, so they named it after him.
