Back in 2017 I had the pleasure of seeing GCJ in GrandRapids. That day my mother was diagnosed with leukemia. She made me still go to the show. I had made a comment about my situation and expressed catfish blues was always a favorite song of my mother. Gary came out on stage said a few words directed to me about my mom and opened his show with a like 10 minute rendition of catfish blues. I was brought to tears.

Notice how the video starts out with Clark and the bass player and drummer (the rhythm guitarist shows up much later in this video). A lot like Hendrix's band with Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell. All in all a great performance!

See, I don't really see Hendrix in him. He doesn't seem to be going for that funk and vodoo mystique, nor the primacy of the guitar solo and shredding. I'm not sure who to compare him to though. He has a lot of fusion in his work.

It's really great that this guy is doing with the Hendrix legacy the precise opposite of what Monte Monthomery is doing. Monte takes it into a technical stratosphere where nobody can follow him. Gary takes it all back to,the Delta roots by capturing the raw emotion. Real blues has humor, dignity, stoicism and anger, all balancing each other out. And this guy has it ALL! Albert Collins would have loved this.
