He's no Gary Clark Jr. If you saw Gary live and up close you'd be amazed and floored. I was lucky enough ( after waiting in line for 3 hrs) to be front and center standing five feet from him while he played. I can now die a happy old man. I'm 64 and saw Hendrix at The Whiskey in 1966 and this reminded me of that. The whole place was screaming and cheering him the entire 2 hrs he played. It was almost like the Beatles in 1964.

It doesnt have to be a competition. Music is what you feel. Thats why I love music. Its a superpower that everyone can have access to. Music wasnt made to cause anger and conflict

Mayer definitely plays the blues very well or he wouldn't be on stage with the rest. The blues are evolving and most guys my age can't stand it, but I love it. Music is always progessing and Gary is the chosen one. I just saw him live Saturday. Amazing. Fucking amazing. If you get the chance to see him, do it without hesitation.

Yeah your right mate. He's singing using his real voice, playing great guitar. Real talent, real SOUL AND BLUES. Bettter than all this bollix in the charts where they put vocals through a computer to give them a pitch perfect vocal and use faceless session musicians. Sadly the general public ( the Kids) won't hear this on the radio. Sadly. Their loss.

the only GCJ songs anyone knows are the ones on his record. This song, and "please come home" need to be on the next one, this one is already produced fine, just put it on a CD, and it will sell, haha.

It ain't about what notes you play, it's about what you say with them. BB King would play a solo around 4 notes and it would still be able to rip at your heart.

You're right, he definitely isn't. But to say he can't play the blues is crazy, obviously everyone is entitled to their opinion, but the guy can play. Gary is definitely the better mastermind in my opinion. I hope someday that he comes close enough to my home state that I can get to go see him.

Wes style octaves aren't rocket science to play but he was the guy who brought that to the forefront and really got creative with it. Johnny Hodges on Loveless Love (on the LP where Duke is supporting him) isn't substituting the heck out of the chords and superimposing pentatonics all day but...just listen to it. Blues/Jazz/Soul(/Music?)..it's all a feeling (insert boring acknowledgement of underlying theory). Complication isn't an end in itself (BB, Miles, Jim Hall). Easy to play, hard to feel.
damn. Gary.. i'll let that guy find somebody else.

What a mix of Blues and Soul! like Anthony Hamilton with a hint of Hendrix, you can no doubt here especially in this song a bit of Jimi. I think the majority of people here will agree that this is very refreshing to hear in music, just a shame it has 11,585 views, while the dog shit manufactured mainstream music gets millions, well Fuck em if they dont know good music let them listen to xfactor crap im listening to this soulful shieeet.

He really doesn't play much like Hendrix, this track is quite like Little Wing in it's phrasing, but generally Clark plays soul and hip-hop influenced blues rock, while Jimi played psychedelic blues with the early signs of funk in places, they're really pretty different. Gary is great, but Hendrix was unreal (not that it's a competition)
@1Guug11 жыл бұрын
It comes down to personal taste. There is no better in music. Lot of people think playing 300bpm is better than playing 1 note at the right time. Just personal reffrence I gues. Hear the vibrato at 3:00 thats pure feeling and it hits me right to my heart. And for the record, Hendrix invented nothing, sorry but he took just some things and put them together. Of course he was awesome and there will be no next hendrix. stuff like "the next hendrix" is just made up shit from the media.
@taila197612 жыл бұрын
....really? One thing you can't teach is something as abstract as the definition of "soul". He maybe play in the blues box (I don't consider that a problem) but he don't pretend to play it (like John Mayer, my opinion) he just do it. Two different things. GCJ don't play blues, he breath blues.

Interesting. Love Derek Trucks (the guy is seriously just transcending any concept of "notes"), Joe Bona-who now??, I'm actually a huge John Mayer fan but as soon as I heard all Gary's stuff so far and watched his live performances the following became clear: I think Mayer will genuinely be upset by this in a similar way to when Clapton first heard Hendrix. Unfortunately for John, who is awesome at what he does, Gary is the real deal. Gary actually channels It. Just my humble opinion of course.

do you actually play guitar though? just because someone knows how to play a song doesn't mean they have the skill. Just to get your fingers moving this fast is pretty tough. Plus, this not a good showcase of his guitar playing, more of his voice. Check out some of the other videos of him, he goes crazy.
@radicalhenri12 жыл бұрын
and i know that was a hyperbole, but that is not even close to true. it takes a 12 year old 30 minutes to learn "smoke on the water", let alone this.
@1oxfordman12 жыл бұрын
I don't judge music in terms of number of scales used but if that interests you, you might also play attention to the approach notes, arpeggios, use of major scale notes etc etc. I think not "playing the changes" would be more of a concern if he was playing over Standards but in any case you don't always have to strictly play them as such (insert description of Kind of Blue/modal jazz). The last comment about 12yr olds, whilst implausible, is a funny advert for imitation but not creativity.

I'm actually going to school for guitar right now so I kinda know what they're doing. Gary is just playing the blues box. His timing and note choices are alright but he doesn't even really play the changes. Give me a 12 yr old with good ears and 30 minutes and I'll have that kid doing the same lead licks Gary does.
@mattycon2412 жыл бұрын
Tell me again how you think John Mayer can't play the blues? /watch?v=GQkO3SGB3So
@edbaron9512 жыл бұрын
John Mayer isn't that good of a guitarist. Derek Trucks, given, Bonamassa's legit, but as far as age and...I'm gonna call Hendrixity go, Gary's got it down packed. I don't want to argue, though, 'cause this songs way too good not to listen to with full attention.
@dagenerallee0112 жыл бұрын
He has great feel no argument there. (i like him a lot) I'm just saying his playing ability is overrated. I haven't heard him really use any arpeggios to speak of. The way he approaches notes is nice but he's not even on the same universe as miles davis exploring color tones on KOB. He's going the same stuff Stevie and Jimi did just not as technically good, although I like his voice better.

You are all high if you think Gary Clark is a better bluesman than Mayer, Gary wins in the vocal category but Mayer himself has froze buddy guy, b.b king and clapton on stage throughout the years....do your research you amatuers.CASE CLOSED

I'll give you best blues singer but in a world with Joe Bonamassa,Derek Trucks, and John Mayer he can't be considered a great blues player.
@1Guug11 жыл бұрын
come on as a guitar teacher you should now better. It's not coming down to wich note you play but how you play it. btw John Mayer also uses just the major/minor pentatonic so as clapton, BB, SRV, Hendrix,....
@dagenerallee0111 жыл бұрын
Yeah and they all play it better. Gary is good but NOT EVEN CLOSE to the next coming of Hendrix. Hendrix invented this stuff. Gary copied and didn't do it as well
