Gary's an incredible, fresh and young artist. Just what modern blues needed. He's got his very own style. So if you don't like it then I guess you shouldn't listen to his music. He doesn't have to change, he's good just the way he is. I know he is going to keep improving and evolving as an artist. Keep it up Gary!.

I have to laugh at all the people that come on here knocking musician's, primarily guitar players. Umm, GCJ and all those others that are "terrible" or "need practice" etc... they are playing crossroads festivals and sold out stadiums to 10's of thousands of people while you sit behind your computer screen typing away...Who's the real winner and loser here! I don't mean to get personal with anyone that has commented here, just trying to get a point across to anyone negative, just shut up and listen to the music and appreciate it and enjoy it, if its not your bag then move on, but if you appreciate this form of music then enjoy cause if not for people like Mayer and GCJ (to name a small few) keeping this train going, then we'd all be shafted with nothing better to listen to than Nikki Manaj (don't know how to spell it, don't care!) or Justin Beiber!

You're so right. People that say those things just don't get it. The music is so much more than technical skill, its a feeling and a sound. Its a complete experience and it is inspiring. If people want to knock technical skills, let them, because they just don't get it and never will. These are the same people who praise bands such as The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin as Gods. I, too, praise them as such but also recognize that they were far from technically proficient when they played and that is a good thing. Sloppy is good. Sloppy and on the verge of a train wreck is what makes bands great live. Its the danger element. Its living on the edge. Every great musician or band that you can think of rides that fine, train wreck line when they perform. Perfection is boring. This guy, Gary Clark Jr. gets it, plays it, and lives it. He's the real deal. I would love to see his critics sit down in a room and jam with him in private, thinking that they would show him a thing or two, lol. Gary Clark Jr. has forgotten more than his critics on here will ever know. Most of them have never played a bigger venue than their garage or bedroom. If they had ever performed for a real audience, and experienced that energy, had ever had the courage to ride that fine line, take that risk, then they would know how silly they sound. Play on, GCJ, play on! And, to his critics, get a life my friends.

Bronson Dawe Damn! I hate that argument! "Beliebers" use it; "Directioners" use it; even recent Colplay fans use it... Let me tell you something: ticket sales don't mean a thing! I bet even the Backstreet Boys sold a lot of tickets back in their days and yet it doesn't mean they're the greatest band in the world, are they? If you want to say something good about Gary Clark Jr, or any other artist you like, talk about their talent, their uniqueness, their vibe, their soul, the way they put you in a certain mood, but never ever talk about sales again, please. This guy doesn't need to show us a profit report to be a great musician, he only has to play the guitar the way he does, and that's what makes him one of the greatest musicians right now. Please please please don't ever use that poor argument again 'cause you're reducing music and talent to money, and money can't buy you talent. Just take a look at MTV and tell me if any of those profitable "musicians" has the talent that this guy has.

I dig him. Lots of feeling and a restrained power in his performances. I usually do not like guitarists that play so over driven but he has a command of the rhythm and dynamics. He knows how to develop the tension and release required. He has done his homework. The real deal. He must be loud as heck here though and yet his vocal comes through relaxed.

To everyone that doesn't think he's that good. Maybe you should do some more research into his music.. Look up "When the sun goes down" the live version where he plays harp as well. Its amazing! After that watch the video where he plays with the Honey Dripper band.. He actually is amazing!! You see... So many guitarist play what you want to hear, thats why they are popular. Gary plays whatever he wants, thats why he is great. Most people with a voice like his would go straight to pop music and sing the chorus to some shitty Pitt Bull song.. He stayed true and i think thats pretty amazing. Also try and find the video where he is on a raft playing blues hahah guarantee you'll watch it more than once

@JohnMichaelLawrence
@JohnMichaelLawrence 10 жыл бұрын
The blues has been hijacked by such apathy of emotion, filled with never-ending copycats of the Stevie Ray Vaughan generation of sound, but without any of the soul. Gary represents everything real to me about the soul of blues and blues-rock. It's supposed to be a musical movement of expressing emotion through sound and true feel, not needlessly parroting others who have come before. Sure, Gary's playing is not up to the technicality of a John Mayer or Joe Bonamassa type. But, who cares? No offense to either of those individuals as people, but for me their music doesn't express with anything close to this level of genuine raw emotion. When I look at the audience, filled with so many individuals presumably uninterested, all I can think is that these people just don't comprehend. Their minds are unable or unwilling to take off their blinders to open themselves up for something truly unique and real. Gary is a modern iteration of the blues, not entirely like anything that has come before. Some folks don't like it. Some folks don't feel comfortable with it. But, for me, Gary is a major influence, and one of the few artists in my mind to gain widespread success whom I actually give-a-damn about. SHOW 'EM HOW IT'S DONE, GARY!

That an Epiphone with the same hardware as a Gibson (after a few mods) costs significantly less than the Gibson? That Fender and other brands are able to put out equally - or better quality/value products - also made in the USA for significantly less money. Gibsons are nowhere near as good as they were, that's not to say they can't get better. Most big brands have gone through this period, Fender, Vox etc.

Why not? Both are/were technically talented, blend psych-rock and blues, use heavy distortion, and have revitalized their genre in a way that very few people have matched. And while it's not a qualitative judgment so much as a cultural one, they're both successful and excellent black artists in a genre that's been dominated by all-white bands since the 60s. It's a totally reasonable comparison.
