@wolfgangrittner66374 жыл бұрын
are you kidding? Underrated? He is the guy who played guitar in thin lizzy!! Where I come from(Austrian alps), Everyone here knows he is one of the greatest guitar plyers of his generation and was also the axeman in Motörhead. They named our school after him (in the 70s already). Underrated no way...

Brian Downey,the most underrated drummer in rock,he was solid as a rock & had an internal metronome that had/has no equal.I've listened to studio cuts against live cuts.... He was rock steady, never missed a beat,no wonder Gary Moore loved playing with him
@AllenIsaacs-r9rАй бұрын
Agreed, Also Phil was not considered really a bassist because such a brilliant songwriter and lyricist... I think he started out on guitar just writing songs, then switched to bass out of necessity... Let me tell you, as a Producer/Engineer. Very few guys can play bass with a pick and not rush the tempo and keep the groove... Phil is Brilliant with Brian on the Kit, I have been chastised here on KZbin comments saying how underrated Phil and Brian are as a backing section. They laid down the perfect groove, just behind the beat so the "Shredders" on either side of them "Could Shine", there were many. Eric Bell, originally, then, Gary Moore, Robo (Brian Robertson), John Sykes, then the American, very underrated (Scott Gorham), and even Snowy White on the last tunes was awesome. All Excellent ! It takes a strong leader, someone "Comfortable in his skin" and confident to let the songs go where they go and just "Lay it down" , Phil, Gary RIP......

Brian Downey keeps everything clean and tight wwhat a great drummer, it proves you don't have to be super technical just a great feel.

I think Downey is a more technical than most guys kind of drummer, but not too technical that it gets in the way. One of my favourites too. His drum solo in bad reputation is probably my favourite of all time. Not over top, just right.

Always loved this song. Love the whole Jailbreak LP. I'll never understand why the industry forces music into these narrow boxes. Hard rock. Metal. Punk. Death. Doom. Thrash. Alternative. Indie, etc. Then the younger musicians follow suit to the categories. Then their fans. Then the venues. Before you know it, guys are more worried about which Hot Topic patch of ripped T-shirt swatch they are going to pin to their denim jacket, than they are enjoying and honoring great undefined music like this. Montrose, Moore, Fripp, Beck, B. Campbell. Fuck now time is starting to take these guys from us. They can never be replaced.

My favourite Thin Lizzy guitarists in preference order: 1) Scott Gorham. No one seems to mention Scott when talking about Lizzy guitarists. He always seems to be overlooked which puzzles me to this day. For me he was Phil's right-hand, equally as charismatic and his playing shaped Lizzy's sound. If you think of a gin & tonic, Phil was the gin and Scott was the tonic. 2) Brian Robertson: A player who had feel and didn't overplay. Bluesy undertones and a mellow swagger made him perfect for Thin Lizzy. 3) Snowy White: This will surprise many and many more will disagree but I thought Snowy's playing suited Lizzy's sound and style beautifully. He's a blues player and Lizzy always had a blues undercurrent to their sound. They were never a metal band, they were far too creative for that, and Snowy's laid back guitar-slinging blended beautifully with the Lizzy musical brew. 4) Gary Moore: A bit too hard for my ears. He didn't have the 'feel' for Lizzy's music that Brian Robertson had. His attack was too much for my liking. 5) Midge Ure: I know I'll get ripped apart for this but he's better than people give him credit for and to step into Gary's shoes at short notice and learn the solos to perform live is just crazy shit. 6) Eric Bell: No disrespect to Eric but Lizzy hadn't found their sound during his stint in the band and his playing was too folksy for my liking. 7) John Sykes: I loathed him in the band. He's a metal player and Lizzy weren't a metal band. Putting him in the band was like putting a baseball cap and Doc Martens on a bird of paradise. Fast but ham-fisted and about as delicate as a bomb blast. By the way, when Phil died Lizzy died as far as I'm concerned so I haven't included any players in the various incarnations after Phil's passing because I don't recognise or accept them as Thin Lizzy.
