@@skipdk Indeed. You look at young kids in their first couple of years at school, mixing, playing with other kids from different backgrounds, colours or creed, and there are no barriers. They just get on and have fun. Its as they grow up and see that adults get away with it, that they then start to emulate that behaviour, and the cycle goes on. Education is paramount in order to stop this, and sorting out social media.

Jordan Scott Absolutely, there is evidence out there that show discrimination is learned. I go to my son’s daycare everyday (here in Canada where we have people from all racial backgrounds) and I don’t see it among the kids. I think walking off the pitch cancelling the game, replaying it with no fans in the stadium would be good, they can also look at points deduction, maybe 1 point deduction for racism and as someone mentioned below publicly shame those who do it, no point protecting them. The problem with what Raheem Sterling said is that when he said "try win the game to hurt them".. what if you don't win or a black player doesn't score? then it leaves those racists laughing even more.

In that, I agree with Gary that there should be a consensus of how to proceed. For me, emptying stadiums, and if racism is repeated, banning teams is the only way to force rehabilitation.

No, I feel quite disappointed in Sterling. His stance has changed and the new statement seems extremely similar to Guardiola's response when he was asked the same question. If the players continue to ignore this problem, the authorities will do nothing to address this situation. Sadly, the best way to bring about any change is to hurt the organizations financially, and a whole team walking out is maybe the best way to do that.

It a criminal offence to commit a racial motivated crime (abuse, abh, gbh etc...) The law outside of the the football governing bodies should be punishing these people and clubs. But, we rarely hear of any such case. It's pathetic! Being a white South African, having been brought up in a very racially charged environment and having witnessed and seen racism first hand and now being married to a Ghanaian woman... I am just as qualified to talk about racism than a black person would be and as such it HAS to be discussed by people with intelligence and morals, who are passionate enough to make a difference with this situation, no matter what skin colour they are. Great response from Gary who said Racism is wrong, that he once turned a blind eye to it, and that something should be done. Great insight. My view is that there are loads of black players in football now, yet only a certain few in the Premier League ever suffer it, and maybe that says something about the public perception of these players. Ashley Cole and Raheem Sterling get abuse, but not Paul Pogba, Fred or Andros Townsend. If you watch games in parts of Europe then there is more of a problem which gives me hope that the UK, despite Brexit and stories of intolerance, is not as bad as we think.

Paul Pogba was, reportedly, racially abused playing for France in a friendly against Russia in Moscow in 2018. Just because some black players don't go around telling you they've been abused doesn't mean they aren't. It just means that they're not saying anything, and very often they're not saying anything because they're afraid to. Sadly, your opinion is part of the problem. Accept that it happens to every black player, whether they've been public about their abuse or not, and help do something about it.

3 strike rule could work. 1st strike, major financial fine and/or stadium closure. Second strike, 6 point deduction in qualifying or group stage in a tournament. Third strike, expulsion from next major tournament.

I am against racism and agree it needs to be kicked out of football. But what I don't like it is that there is a sort of dominant class of middle-class liberal English people from metropolitan areas who influence those in the FA to attack working-class English men and make them bow before their ideology. I think that the only way to deal with these issues is to initially (for those nation(s) whose fans are guilty of racially abusing players) have the home games of those nation(s) played behind closed doors. No fans in the ground/stadium at all. Then, if the fans from that country are continuing to racially abuse players, ban that country from competing in the next two or three tournaments (so a ban from a World Cup, a European Championships and a Euro Championship). Also, UEFA and FIFA need to get involved with the educational side in order to get people to understand that racism is not tolerated in today's world.

Make the offending teams connected play in empty stadiums would be a start. And not just for a couple of games but for a significant number. That hits and sends a message to everyone; the players, the fans, the media, the top brass ect. It also adds to a financial punishment. Then, with all the cameras now at games, filter out the racists and ban them for life. You would also need an increasing ladder of consequences for any repeat offenders. More games in empty stadiums, larger club/team fines, suspensions or point deductions and the like.

Also how did one of the most hated players in the world (if your not a united fan!) turn into one of the most respected pundits in the world. Absolutely couldnt stand him as a player as Im an Arsenal fan but you can just see now hes just so passionate about football, respect!

Instead of the player being abused, the teammates who stand by the guy/guys should walk off with him and not have him continue enduring the abuse. That shows solidarity, support and also a direct response that fans that racially abuse the players should not be privileged to watch the game and unless the club does something to these fans, the club should be fined the TV rights.

It shouldn't matter how the players or the managers are you going to react. The authorities, the FA, FIFA they need to take a stand and do something about. Racism is an issue in football that should've been dealt with decades ago, it's embarrassing that its still an issue today.

Behavior change only occurs when finding the right incentives... fines don't work because those doing the harmful actions aren't all that connected to the punishment. Walking off doesn't get there either because it is just a temporary stop of the match. I'd say start giving PKs, let the players of the team feel the pain of the punishment and the fans for what is happening on the field. One PK given and if nothing else, you'll have a lot of irate players and other supporters confronting their fans who are acting like knuckledragging mutants.
