I met Gary at a party at a radio convention in 1996. He was kind of quiet and soft spoken. Like a lot of us radio people when we’re not “on.”

This is actually May 20, 1981---Gary notes that he took over from Johnny Grant in 1962, and then mentions a few moments later that it's been 19 years. Gary spent a year as Director of Creative Services for Golden West Broadcaster, then joined Gannett's KPRZ on June 7, 1982.

Gannett still owned 1150 six years later when I dropped by for visit in the summer of 1988...it was KIIS-AM by then, simulcasting the FM.

I remember that day well becz I was there, looking on in the booth. I got to be there when he signed off for the last time! I also met him in 1962 at the Old Spaghetti studios. A kind-of "coming full-circle," which I'll never forget!

Just as I was discovering him on radio they pushed him aside. The station eventually flipped to a music of your life format in early 1982. As someone posted, this is 1981.

Correction to my correction---Gary says tomorrow, June 13th---so this is June 12, 1981.
