Oh, my! This song takes me right back to the 60's! Gary Puckett had one of the best voices of the era, and he put SO much emotion into the songs he sang. He still has a great voice, too! My son took me to see Gary in concert a few years ago and during the intermission I actually met him and chatted with him briefly. Thanks for reacting to his music.

In 1968 when this song came out the Ed Sullivan Show was the premiere television show to be on but Mr. Sullivan was also known as a stickler for family friendly so anything suggestive was frowned upon. He asked that Gary Sing different words deemed too suggestive so "the facts of life" was turned into "the way of life" and Gary gladly obliged because he knew he and the Union Gaps performance would be watched by millions and millions of people and this became one of their biggest hits peaking at #2 on the charts!! Gary's vocals are unbelievable for a live performance and I doubt there are many that could sing as he does today!!!

Bill Medley At age 81 Gary Puckett is still alive and performing Their first six singles all went gold in 1968. And Gary Puckett and the Union Gap sold more records that year than any other artist including The Beatles. Woman,Woman was their first big hit, recorded in August of 1967 it went to # 3 in 1968 and Young Girl went to # 1. Young Girl,Over You,Lady Willpower we’re written by their Producer Jerry Fuller. Gary really shows his range on This Girl is a Woman Now Gary got tired of Columbia Records telling him what songs to sing so he failed to show up for a Recording session and was later dropped by his label around 1972. My favorite songs by The Union Gap were co- written by Gary Puckett Could I, and A Simple Man. The Union Gap was formed in 1967 in San Diego. The other members were :Kerry Chater RIP, Dwight Bement and drummer Paul Wheatbread. And Gary Withem.

Between 'Young Girl', 'Woman', and 'Lady Willpower', Gary Puckett and the Union Gap definitely had a firm grasp on songs dealing with male/female relationships.

Bill Medley is the bass-baritone one from The Righteous Brothers you were thinking of. Gary Puckett has an incredible voice and is criminally overlooked. Also you should check out: "This Girl Is A Woman Now", "Over You", "Woman, Woman", and "Don't Give Into Him", and a great remake of Bobby Goldsboro's classic "Honey" from Gary Puckett and The Union Gap.

Great choice. One of the great male vocals of the time. I believe, and I may be wrong, that they were discovered performing at a bowling alley in San Diego by a recording agent who was lost looking for directions.

Gary Puckett: I actually discovered Jerry Fuller at his office - although he’s been given credit for discovering me and the band at a lounge in San Diego. I had been looking all over Los Angeles for anybody from a record company who would be willing to see what we looked like and take a listen to what I sounded like. So I was taking my portfolio all over Los Angeles, and the last place I stopped on my way out of town was at the CBS building which housed Columbia Records. I went in and asked the woman working the phones if there was anybody there who might look at my portfolio, and she said, “Go down the hallway, turn right, then go to the second doorway and you’ll find a guy there by the name of Jerry Fuller.” When I went into his office, he was hanging up the gold record for Ricky Nelson’s “Travelin’ Man,” which was very impressive to me because I’d never seen a gold record before! I thought, “Gee, whiz; this is really great,” and I said, “That’s fantastic! Please, will you take a look at my portfolio?” And fortunately he was looking for me - and I say that insofar as he already had a song in mind that he wanted to record. It was called “Woman, Woman (Have You Got Cheating On Your Mind?),” which was written by a couple of fellas from Nashville. Jerry loved the song, thought it was a hit, and was looking for someone who he thought would be the right singer for the song. And in this case, I happened to walk into his office at just the right time. Jerry heard me singing “My Prayer.” He liked what he heard - he liked my voice - and he said, “Where can I see this band?” I told Jerry he could come to San Diego - actually Clairemont, which is a suburb of San Diego - where we were working at the Quad Room, which was part of the Clairemont Bowl. He said, “I’ll be there Saturday night,” but he actually showed up on Friday night, so as to catch me off guard! At midnight, he walked up to the stage and I looked at him and almost didn’t recognize him, but then it dawned on me who he was, and I asked, “What are you doing here now?” I said, “I’m cruising through the night waiting for you to come tomorrow night!” but he said, “No, I love it. Let’s go make a record.”

A popular group from the 60's , this is very catchy and as you say creative lyrics and similar to Young Girl another very popular one by them, he has a very characteristic voice. At that time tracks were often relatively short .You are thinking of Bill Medley from the R Brothers-Colin Ward

I used to listen to oldies radio stations a lot in the 80's and 90's and they played this bands big hits like this all the time back then and I called them Gary F it and the Union Crap and they didn't play a lot of other artists hits from the time then. I like them more now though and the oldies stations are called classic hits now and they play 80's and 90's Pop songs.

It's true that songs with explicit lyrics would be censored or not played but I think also that many songs dating back even long before this were just written in a subtle manner for artistic purposes. People enjoyed sex just as much back then as they do now but I think they treated it with higher regard and less casualness. It was more tied up in emotion and love than just a physical act. I think that is reflected in the language and descriptions within the lyrics. Btw, sing along with this song and I bet you will like it better. You will feel how great a melody this is.

Johnny Mathis' most successful imitator. Puckett had some success with this and "Young Girl", but frankly how long and how much success can someone have that so closely imitates a true original in the pop music business? Puckett had a good voice, no doubt, but it's the difference between a lollipop and dinner at Nobu's.

Kind of confusing and conflicting review of this song as you state "I like his voice, I really enjoyed his voice, love the artistry and love the creativity of the lyrics, and how they used innuendo back in the day" also you said you really enjoyed this song, while smiling and laughing as you review....but...after a dozen compliments the result is you don't like the song?(Not crazy about it.) #okay👌 #lolol😅 What didn't you like then? As you gave many, many reasons of what you did! You even said you like young girll better than this one and that was the song u were nervous about reviewing and said u didn't like that he almost changed his mind about the girl but u liked he did the right thing in the end. 👍 So this song has just straight up inuendo which would be the only thing one would guess made u not like it, however u said you LOVE that about this song its lyrical innuendo... 🤔 So your ultimate review doesn't make sense to me with all due respect. One would think for sure it would be going In your phone 📱❤
