@Scott Bivins • Gary was never under rated by his fans and Rock music fans in general and not by his peers and you know who makes those top 100 lists ? Jack ass clowns who don't play guitar and don't know real rock & roll.

I saw REO 6 times, Gary left the band because he believed the Drugs and lifestyle would kill him, he worked in a record store in Peoria, I met his son in the late 90s he was selling windows and was an aspiring Guitarist. I told him Gary was one of the greatest guitar players I had ever seen. Live performances by this band were amazing.

like elvis, his body had failed him;however, his talent never failed him & he plays here as well as he did in the 70s & 80s. harmonics on the same level as rory gallagher & roy buchanan. he could jammed with jeff beck, les paul, ritchie blackmore, chet atkins, bb king, andre segovia, duane & dickey and would have held his own & I am sure he would have been a compliment to their playing. damn, I regret I never saw him live. thanks for great music gary !!!!

Same as post below me. My 1st concert was Spring of 74. We KNEW who REO were, that's who we were there to see. Murray St. University in Murray, Ky. It was the opening act that had us stumped. Some guy named Lynyrd Skynyrd, so we thought. Second Helping had literally just been released but Sweet Home Alabama hadn't hit the airwaves yet. Of all this & it's Gary I remember the most, hearing & SEEING him play his guitar. He was behind many of those early REO rockers, some of the best....not having been created yet. Sure, life & excess + illness had taken it's toll but Gary looks like he is truly enjoying himself. He's sure as hell earned it. As a lifelong performer he was very aware of his appearance. He doesn't seem to have a problem with it, why should we? RIP Mr. Richrath.

Thanks for posting this!! Saw REO in ‘77.:.they played at Soldier Field in Chicago during a Super Bowl of Rock show...also on the bill: .38 Special (before anyone had heard of them), Lynard Skynard (just a few months before the plane crash) and Ted Nugget. Saw them the same year when they played the college gym in my home town (indulged in a green leafy substance with a couple roadies before the show) Didn’t matter if they played a huge stadium or a small college venue, Gary gave it everything he had. One of my favorite guitarists ever!! To this day I still try to mimic his style and sound/tone. Could never figure out why he was so underrated. About time for me to play some turkey music:)

David you must be about my age. I started listening to REO back in late 73 or early 74. On another note, my dad delivered gas to a station in Coloma Michigan, Benton Harbor, and Ann Arbor Michigan, and I would ride with him in the semi. Small world! Either way, with Gary, Allen, and Greg gone I agree it's just a tribute. No disrespect for Bruce because that guy is one great bass play and he has a good voice. He did a great job filling in for Greg due to him quitting for losing $100 in ten minutes. We all know where that money went. Cocaine was on the rise big time back then.

String Breaks at just around 3:39 during his masterful string bend vibrato after getting everything possible out of that string. Saw him in 1972 at Omaha Nebraska. I was in the front row. For some reason anybody that would pass in front of me tripped. After about 20 people falling I'm thinking "WTF". Why are they doing this. Then as I looked down to see if there was something in the way that was making them fall. Sure enough, it was my Jaw. It was hanging down from my mouth. It must have been there from the moment he played his first solo. Love you Gary, RIP my brother. Legend has it that before his guitar tech changed his strings, he had to dip all the strings in liquid valium. The strings were so friggen nervous and doing this made them stay in tune a little longer. When they absolutely couldn't take it anymore, they would commit string suicide and just break.

@@edarnold1426 I'll meet you half way Ed. I agree the best lineup was with Alan and Gary, a no brainer. But the new guys weren't too bad. And of course having a lead like KC made it possible for REO to continue being a very good Rock band. I'm sure you understand the power that is required to play REO music. The music deserves younger, more energetic studs to perform it. I'm surprised KC allows the music he and the others created, to be performed at not so high a level.

@@joseftullen6372 I agree with you on young part and more energy. However Gary could still bend strings in 2014 just one year before past, and sounded like he did 40 years earlier. To me there will never be another R.E.O. Speedwagon after Gary and Allen left. Allen and Neal went clear back to the beginning of R.E.O. and Gary in 1970. Without that signature sound, style and drive that Gary added to their music I don't know if they would have ever made it big. I've never heard anyone sound exactly like Gary. As they say hind site is better that foresight so who knows. It's all just a great part of history to me now though.
