Same as post below me. My 1st concert was Spring of 74. We KNEW who REO were, that's who we were there to see. Murray St. University in Murray, Ky. It was the opening act that had us stumped. Some guy named Lynyrd Skynyrd, so we thought. Second Helping had literally just been released but Sweet Home Alabama hadn't hit the airwaves yet. Of all this & it's Gary I remember the most, hearing & SEEING him play his guitar. He was behind many of those early REO rockers, some of the best....not having been created yet. Sure, life & excess + illness had taken it's toll but Gary looks like he is truly enjoying himself. He's sure as hell earned it. As a lifelong performer he was very aware of his appearance. He doesn't seem to have a problem with it, why should we? RIP Mr. Richrath.

Saw REO in ‘77.:.they played at Soldier Field in Chicago during a Super Bowl of Rock show...also on the bill: .38 Special (before anyone had heard of them), Lynard Skynard (just a few months before the plane crash) and Ted Nugget. Saw them the same year when they played the college gym in my home town (indulged in a green leafy substance with a couple roadies before the show) Didn’t matter if they played a huge stadium or a small college venue, Gary gave it everything he had. One of my favorite guitarists ever!! To this day I still try to mimic his style and sound/tone. Could never figure out why he was so underrated. About time for me to play some turkey music:)

String Breaks at just around 3:39 during his masterful string bend vibrato after getting everything possible out of that string. Saw him in 1972 at Omaha Nebraska. I was in the front row. For some reason anybody that would pass in front of me tripped. After about 20 people falling I'm thinking "WTF". Why are they doing this. Then as I looked down to see if there was something in the way that was making them fall. Sure enough, it was my Jaw. It was hanging down from my mouth. It must have been there from the moment he played his first solo. Love you Gary, RIP my brother. Legend has it that before his guitar tech changed his strings, he had to dip all the strings in liquid valium. The strings were so friggen nervous and doing this made them stay in tune a little longer. When they absolutely couldn't take it anymore, they would commit string suicide and just break.

Without that signature sound, style and drive that Gary added to their music I don't know if they would have ever made it big. I've never heard anyone sound exactly like Gary.
