Chaka got her decades wrong about prince and the color purple. Prince was young when she met him and she was about thirty. Chaka was asked to play Shug not celie. And the color purple book and movie came out in the 80s when Chaka was in her thirties.

Chaka Khan was a HARD PARTIER for decades and has trouble remembering all the facts. Both her and Phyllis Hyman were pursued at different times for the role of "Shug Avery", NOT "Celie". And they didn't turn it down for whatever phony excuse Chaka gave Jennifer Hudson on her show. The real reason was that NO MAJOR FEMALE R&B VOCALIST at that time wanted to be associated with the Lesbianism played out in Alice Walker's book! Such a role could have possibly meant the death of their careers in the 1980s!

Why did he offer her the role of Celie? Chaka Kan is pretty. I could see him offering her the role of Sug Avery since she can sing.

He wanted her to play Shug, not Celie. Chaka said it wrong. If you think about it, Shug was a singer and it makes sense to have Chaka play that role.

Chaka Khan (as well Phyllis Hyman) was offered the role of Shug Avery, not Celie. Tina Turner on the other hand (at the very beginning of her solo comeback success) WAS offered the role of Celie and had the movie's producer Quincy Jones campaigning for her. But she betrayed Quincy in a pre-production meeting when (unbeknownst to Q) she famously told Spielberg & studio big-wigs "I have no interest in playing this role whatsoever. It took me 20 years to distance myself from that Black shit and I'm not going back! But PLEASE keep me in mind for the next Indiana Jones project." LOL.
