This world needs more Garys. Losing a child is the worst thing a parent can go through. The pain never heals. It is like a sore that never heals. You just learn to treat the wound on a daily basis. Gary is an example of how to serve others and, at the same time, deal with such a tragic loss. My condolences to him and his entire family.

Thank you, Jack, for your compassionate and thoughtful conversation with Gary about his son, Mac. Gary is an amazing person and deserves so much for his contributions to our world, not just to our servicemembers and first responders. I type this with tears streaming down my cheeks. Thank you both, and this caused me to rethink my own contributions. I truly believe Mac is playing his beautiful music in heaven and surrounded by our loved ones who left us too soon.

This one left me wrecked. My 16 yo old son is battling a brain tumor (he is expected to beat it and make a mostly full recovery....but we are right in the middle of it presently) Watching this made me realize just how much compartmentalizing I've done just to stay in the fight. God bless Gary and his family. and thanks Jack.

Wow! His Son's music is hauntingly beautiful!! It breaks my heart that someone who has done SO MUCH for the world had to go through losing his son. I guess none of us get through life unscathed. I'm so sorry for your family's loss.

Losing a child, even when they're an adult, is the worse thing a parent can experience. The herculean strength required not to break down into uncontrollable sobbing during this interview cannot be overstated.

Gary, thank you so much for sharing your son with us. The way you unfold his story is extremely moving. You do an outstanding job bringing him into our lives. What a wonderful young man he was. I would also like to thank you and your foundation for being there with us during our deployments. You brought to us a sense of worthwhileness that provided much needed strength. When I was 9, my father got me a drumset right after he and my mom got divorced. Mom was not happy but I went ahead and played for 45 years so it was a pretty good investment lol.
