Gary was one artist that few know....he had a special ability. Gary could listen to any song out there...then he knew it by mind. He was gifted with a recording mind. Never a need for sheet music. One time only hearing a song preform and he knew it from then on ...cord for cord, note by note after that. He truly was an amazing artist. I love his music. He will forever be missed.

For a long time I’ve tried to pin down what makes Gary so truly special as a singer & musician. I think it’s that he sang & played real nitty gritty country material, but gave it his own special twist with a kind of freedom in his vocals that had a lot of rock feel in it (and this was a unique combination, had nothing to do with rockabilly or Southern rock or pop country). Sometimes Dwight Yoakam gives off a feel a bit like that, like in “You’re The One”. But Gary is different, somehow freer, wilder.

Many songs tell a good story, but some songs have great stories about them, so If you’ll indulge me a moment I’ll tell you about it. Gary and I went into RCA for a meeting with the producer on Gary’s upcoming session, and we took three songs, a co-write, ( Temporary Love), one of my songs, ( Second Time Around) and one Gary just had an idea of, (Let’s Forget That I’m Married). They had taken Roy Dea , Gary’s normal producer, and given him someone else we both ended up disliking greatly. He turned all three songs down, but said he liked the idea of the “Married “ song, and if we could finish it by 9am the next day Gary could record it at 1pm. So, we find ourselves up against the wall, but determined to get it done. We went back to the suite at the Hiatte with a bottle of Jack and two guitars, Gary’s wife Lou was with him and some girl? was with me. The girls went out on the town and left us to it. We worked all night on that damn song and it just wouldn’t click. It was nearing daylight and Gary was getting frustrated. I had a thought and said, “ Lets turn it around. We’re looking at it wrong”. He looked at me and I said, “ Maybe you’re both married “! I sang the first few lines,” Let’s forget that we’re married, let’s be single tonight”!! “That’s it “, Gary jumped up all excited. We threw everything away but those two lines and it all came together in 15-20 minutes!! We had worked 10 hours on a song, only to throw most of it away and write a new one in 20 minutes!! The sun was coming up over Nashville, and we went downstairs, grabbed a bite to eat, and headed to RCA. The producer loved the song and at 1am we were recording it. He didn’t even realize it was a different title and a different angle than what he had heard yesterday, he just knew he liked it. It became one of Gary’s last chart singles and was included on the album RCAs Greatest Hits, Gary Stewart. That night will always be etched into my memory, we had many writing sessions together, but were never put under the gun like that night. Gary looked at me after the session and said “ Next time don’t wait till the last five minutes!! “ We spent the rest of the day honky Tonkin and making jokes about the producer ( they never worked together again !). I hope you’ve enjoyed my little story here. The story behind the song sometimes is more interesting . Sonny T

Great story! I graduated high school in the 90s and didn't discover his music till 2000s. His songs transcend generations because his subject matter remains relevant to this day. Life happens, shit hits the fan and you somehow in your own feeble way try to pull it all together. What he call human the human existential struggle.

This should be taken down or at least changed. His wife of 43 years, Mary Lou, did NOT leave him. She died from pneumonia on November 26, 2003. Gary took his on life on December 16, 2003 because he felt he couldn't live without her.

Lou actually loved this song and was there in the hotel when we wrote it. That was while he was still on RCA. It had absolutely nothing to do with Lou , it was a Song!!!!
@thesonnytackettshow79492 жыл бұрын
If you’ll go back and read my story you will find that Lou was with us the whole time and nothing was mentioned about her “ leaving” Gary. It’s a story about how this song came to be and nothing else!!!
@thesonnytackettshow79492 жыл бұрын
Eddie, I didn’t write the post on this, I just commented on what I personally know( as I co-wrote the song with Gary, was even in the studio when it was recorded) . They didn’t get everything right in the post. My comments are about how the song came to be. Sonny T
