Gary The Lawyer: Employees vs. Independent Contractors (Vol. 1, Issue 3)

In this installment, I’m going to discuss the differences between hiring independent contractors versus hiring employees. Let me start by asking a simple question: Would you rather hire an employee to work for you, and worry about paying workers’ compensation premiums, unemployment taxes, payroll taxes, and benefits, as well as properly calculating overtime; or would you prefer simply to commission an independent contractor and pay that person solely for the work itself? The answer is obvious. Hiring an independent contractor is much easier than hiring an employee.
Unfortunately, that practice can land you in a lot of hot water.

I have a question. I worked already as an independent (no contract nor anything whatsoever/not an employee). I have been working weekends only for about two months now and no problems. Now, employer is asking for my SSN and is telling me my last check for work already done wont be given until I give my SSN, is this even legal?, I dont feel like just giving my social to just a person (is not even a company), Am I in the wrong?, I will give it but I dont like his/her way and it doesnt sound even legal to me, that this person does not pay me or “kidnaps” my pay until I give what he/she wants... Any thoughts?

LOL !! ,.. On January 1, 2019, a lot of Employers ( jobs ) fired their subcontractors and made 'some' loyal workers into FULL "employees" ,.. THIS Was a mistake by them,.. #Uber and #Lyft are doing this exact same thing too ,..on a broader scale ,.. Employers may not know it ,.. but they can be badly sued for doing this, risking liens ,..and even worse Ca Tax liens and from bureaus of the likes of the EDD DEPT OF unemployment Calif , Consumer right's Attys, etc,.. many will come at their former employers with lawsuits using things like "Age discrimination" and they may win too !! because liberal judges will ask; "well,..why then did you fire the guy ??" LOL
