Spain is a jazz song by Chick Corea from 1976 and the great Al Jarreau added lyrics to it in 1980. He scatted the lyrics. Gary was doing what we call scatting in jazz, with words or by imitating solos in in instruments. It's a style of singing, mostly in jazz.

Back in the 80's there was only 2 artist here in the Philippines who can nail that song perfectly. The other one was Richard Merck. In my opinion, Richard Merck can do better scatting (it's because his orientation was more on Jazz). Gary on the other hand is more on the mainstream Pop. But you can't deny in terms of "vocals" he is better.

If you will notice, his name is not even in the credits. #GaryIsWithMusicGiants "Spain" was originally composed by Joaquin Rodrigo in 1939 with a long history of instrumental adaptations until keyboard genius Chick Corea wrote the lyrics in 1971 and released the album "Light As A Feather" with Corea (Rhodes electric piano), Flora Purim (vocals and percussion), Stanley Clarke (bass), Airto Moreira (drums), and Joe Farrell (flute), and made it a jazz standard by 1973. Thereafter, Al Jarreau made his popular version during his world tour in an album titled "I Can Recall" in 1980, and the phenomenal group Manhattan Transfer also did their own version. In my humble opinion, Gary V's cover is far more challenging than that of Al Jarreau because he scatted all the instrumental parts while Jarreau did not.

Though "GARY V" as most if not all Pinoys (slang for Filipinos) knew him deeply, i consider him (and sure most Pinoys too) "legendary" in our time. I regard his singing style as "slick" and his voice, "ONE THAT NEVER CHANGE" despite of time. I admit, as u can see him here, he moves a lot - and with speed but his movements are quite calculated that JIBES WELL with synchronicity along with the rhythm and structure of the "material". GARY V's playing it relax and easy. The passion, and the 'SOUL' he puts in and the "showmanship" he displays are that of rare "PLAYERS" of our time - way of the LEGENDs. Dont be surprised but the guy is also a certified (tested for all these more or less 35 years in s-business): a SUPERB SINGER, A VERSATILE ACTOR, PHILIPPINES' ONE OF A FEW AFTER-SOUGHT AND HIGHLY RESPECTED MUSICAL REALITY COMPETITION JUDGE, and a proven honest to goodness homegrown songwriter... he writes originally and fantastically good songs to his credit. What else one can ask for? And OG! I almost i forgot - DO U DANCE? i mean, while singing? yes - he's a virtuoso on that matter - to which i am not fond of - BUT U ARE FREETO GOOGLE him and search him, "Gary's dance moves"... and the way he does it - he surely is a big fan of Michael... (it is quite difficult to sing, same time dance, wallah!). In this act at WISH-BUS, Gary's like a "virus" - he contaminates everyone that accidentally passes by and click this 'SPAIN' stuff version of his - and yes! ANYONE WHO DOES NOT STOMP HIS FEET, AUTO-SWAYZ HIS HANDS AND FINGER-FLICKS WHILE GARY'S PLAYING is "invalid" - he knows not about great music and fine sounds. Hi Dan! That song is very difficult to sing plus he did scatting which is also very difficult to do. Scatting is almost a lost art in music only popular among jazz enthusiasts and also bcoz its very hard to do. I dont think that Wish will grant him any awards or nomination bcoz he is a hall of famer if they do give him nonination, theres no arguing who will be the winner and chances for other artists winning, under the same category as Mr Gary V, will be very very slim. So we'll all understand if Wish will exclude Mr Gary V in their Wish Music Awards! Who can top that performance anyway?

Back in the day when Gary V. (as he is also known here in the Philippines) was still trying to make it in the music scene he was a jazz cover singer and he usually does Al Jerrau, George Benson, and Earth wind and fire in his repertoire. I personally saw him in a show back in 1982, because he was "wiggly", and moving about the stage, when he raised his fist after a song he actually punched a hole in the ceiling (because the music bar was in the basement and the ceiling was very low and he is about 6ft). 😋
