I picked up some old items and tools and one of the items was this old "Old Hickory" butcher knife. You can barely read the Old Hickory name and the blade is completely rusted. They had it in their basement shop. Old Hickory apparently does not epoxy their handles on or at least not with this old knife.
I am trying a different style with this video by running at 2x speed and playing music.

Obviously looking at the finished product, great job. But on the downside,for those novices out here looking for tips and guidance, it would help if instead of background music you would explain the hows and whys of your project. Not bashing! Just an opinion. I searched the topic and saw the screen shot of the knife on part 2 and thought jackpot! But I'm still not much closer to knowing how. Hope mine will turn out that good!

Thank you for that feedback. I debated talking but I was not sure if people wanted to hear that or not so I just tried this. I enjoy restoring things like this. I will talk through the next one. I would love to see how yours turns out. Best of luck with it. Take care and thanks again. Gary

3 minutes in and I am wondering can the handle be saved! Now at 8 minutes and notice the sling is missing. Music is not normally something I like in videos, but this was fine.

I was not sure if the music would work or not. I picked it from KZbin's free music list. The handle should be replaced but I wanted to restore it with the name still on the handle. I hope to get it cleaned up this evening after work if I have time and the start sharpening it. I had to let the epoxy setup for a while. I think I will soak the handle in Tung Oil. I was able to lose the sling at 6 weeks. I was going to make an update video for the 8 week mark which will be in 2 days. I have limited mobility though and can only do things low. Nothing overhead or even reaching out. I went for my first doctor visit last Thursday and he said normally it takes 6 months for the tendons to fully heal to the bone but since mine were torn so bad it could take 8 months. So no forging for me, right handed, for a while. That is why I am trying things like this knife restore and I have some welding projects I would like to do. I just have to be real careful so I don't re-tear my shoulder apart.

Great job Gary, I found this video because I am restoring an Old Hickory that I found in the back yard of a house. I began by using sandpaper to remove most of the rust. I have never attempted something like this, but I remember my grandparents had old hickory knives and knew it needed to be saved. thanks.

Thanks Chris, I am the same way. I grabbed that knife with a bunch of other stuff I was picking up and didn't realize what it was. When I first saw it I thought it was a hopeless cause. But i wanted to try. I didn't know until I read up on Old Hickory that they did not glue their handles on. Over 20 years ago, I made some homemade knives from sawmill band saw blades someone gave me. I bought a bunch of rivets and had several left over. They happened to be the exact size I needed to replace those that were in the handle. Have fun with it and enjoy the process of restoring the knife. It's all a good learning curve so you cannot really mess it up. It's already messed up. But you will learn a great deal about restoring and knives from the process. If you have any questions. Please fill free to ask. Best of luck and have fun.

Why add music, it's more distracting than anything.

Where can I find the correct rivets for the handle?
@GaryForgingOn

I actually had my rivets from many years before. Over 20 years ago, before internet, I was trying to make some knives from large bandsaw blades. A guy I knew had one of those woodmiser portable bandsaw saw mills. I used those and just shaped them into knives and put handles on them. But the rivets I bought back then worked great for this old hickory. The rivets in this knife I restored was just like these in the link. The head of the rivet fit just right. Pure luck for me. But these are the same type rivets I have. Just make sure the rivet head is the right diameter and that the 2 parts (maie/femaie) when fit together are long enough to make it through the wood to each other. On thinner knife handles I just use a hacksaw to shorten one end. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching. amzn.to/3sLR5Hl
