Hi Gary !! Your videos have been so helpful !! Were you on pain meds at your 12 weeks post op ? I am 10 weeks post op of my left knee replacement surgery .. I still have to take pain meds because of the pain ..

I was on prescription meds for about 5 weeks. Then I went to tylenol and ibuprofen. My doctor told me I could take tylenol and ibuprofen together. I just could not take ibuprofen and aleve together. Because they are in the same family. The tylenol and ibuprofen helped but it was still pretty sore for a while. Ice pump machine helps a lot too. I hope that helps and your recovery goes well.

Hi Gary !! For how long did you do therapy at home after you got discharge from out therapy after your knee replacement surgery Yesterday they discharge me from therapy. @darshnapatel4910 I did them for a few weeks more and started tapering off. I probably should have done them longer but I started using them as much as I could to strengthen my knee up. Then at 6 months I had the second knee replaced. That made me work that first knee even more. It hurts some but I think that helped a lot in my recovery. So when I had the second knee done I had to just do more and work it as much as I could. But both knees took over a year before I felt like I was really healing up. I mean, it's not bad 6 or 8 months post op but I still had some soreness so I was wondering if I was going to have that forever. But it gets better. I can now run up and down stairs which I haven't been able to do for years. But I'm 2 years into my recovery.

Did your hip hurt during recovery??
@GaryForgingOn
@GaryForgingOn 12 күн бұрын
I had a bad hip and a bad knee on my right side. All the limping and twisting and over using my left leg wore my left knee out. I originally thought all my pain in my first knee was just from the bad knee until I went to the doctor and he told me my hip was worse than my knee. He wanted to do the hip first since you feel hip pain in the knees and during knee rehab you bend that hip a lot. So I had my hip replaced in 2019 and then both knees replaced, 6 months apart, in 2022. But to answer your question, my hip was a little sore from using it more since I could not use it much before the replacements. But not that bad. But it does work your hip out during rehab. When I had my hip replaced, my knee really hurt bad afterwards. I asked my doc about it and he said whatever joint they work on the next joint to it suffers. So maybe yours is feeling it more because of that. That is just my experiences. I know I am only one person and everyone is different. I hope that helps a little.

I had dynamic hip pin surgery 7 months ago. Whenever I put any kind of electronic device in my pocket i start getting a achy pain in my hip. Have you experienced this? I have a key chain with a tracker that I've always kept in my right pocket which unfortunately is where I had my surgery. Now I have to remember to keep my electronics in my left pocket.
@GaryForgingOn
@GaryForgingOn 15 күн бұрын
Wow, that would be a weird sensation. No, I have not noticed anything like that but all I do like that is occasionally put my phone in my right front pocket. I assume a tracker is an active RFID device and emitting a signal. But I am not sure how that affects metal in a joint unless it somehow sets up a frequency or something. Ok, I am just thinking and guessing now. Sorry about that.

5 years later, glad this came up in my feed. Almost makes me want to try and do a KZbin video. This morning is 5 days post op for me. Had my left hip replaced in June 2013, a little over 11 years ago. I don’t remember much of the rehab from back then, which is probably a good thing. I may have reconsidered it otherwise. Not a walk in the park and that’s with 100 faithful people praying for me. Headed to my first local PT appointment in a few hours. Had PT last Friday at the surgeons office in Frisco, TX where they showed me a few things. Been looking for a used massage table so I can do the exercises at home. Also need to buy a chair because we only have couches in the living room and they are all too low and my improvised method of stacking cushions is not the best plan. Hope everyone else in week one is doing as well or better. God bless you all and our country as the biggest day of our lives is likely going to happen tomorrow. Praying for results within 24 hours of the polls shutting down. USAF Veteran, Grandpa and husband to an amazing woman of God. Love my job working for a great defense contractor out of Houston.

I got my hip replacement last Thursday which makes it 6 days post op. I am a dance fitness instructor and personal trainer with 14 years of experience in the industry and I will tell anyone who is contemplating the surgery. Do not believe in miracles recovery stories and walking away from the hospital pain free. It’s a MAJOR surgery and you will be using a walker and the cain and you MUST do so for your best benefit. Your body and soul will need time to heal and you will. Gradually. Give yourself time and space to do so without rushing the process and take it one small step at a time. I ordered my from the steel place I get my new steel from. It was just raised expanded metal. I think mine is something like 1" by 2" or 2x3 inch diamonds. I cannot remember now. But you can get all sizes. I like the raised instead of flat expanded metal to give something to grip on. The steel place I use is in Tennessee called Tristar Metals but that probably will not help you much depending on where you are located. Any steel supplier should have it or can get it. I hope that helps.

I just had my left hip replacement surgery done 4 weeks ago, had the anterior approach with the robot, surgery was only one hour, I went home the same day was able to climb the stairs and walk with a walker for two weeks, then the cane, was able to drive within two weeks, go to physio once a week, started working from home by the second week, I am doing very well for 64 year old female lol and it’s only been 4 weeks, still a little swelling and muscle soreness, plus my right hip is bad as well so will need that done next and I have a back injury and fibromyalgia on top of it all, so I’m a mess lol but I’m extremely surprised how well I’m doing and no left hip pain anymore, I recommend that anyone getting this done, get the anterior approach and Mako robot if possible or look for a surgeon who offers that surgery as it’s a game changer, as I can’t believe how well I’m doing after 4 weeks…. And yes I’m on pain meds, was before the surgery due to all my injuries and issues I have…. So that helps as well, as my pain was kept very low but the first week is always the hardest with any surgery…

We all heal at different rates. That is what the therapist and my doctor had to drill into my head. Especially when I had my hip replaced before I did the knees. And it will take over a year to feel like you are fully over it. But you get way better after 12 weeks. I just had to keep strengthening my knees to stop the clicking and other problems from swelling and weakness. Now that it has been a couple years it is great. I was told how I will have to keep my teeth clean well for the rest of my life. Infection in the jaw area can go to fake joints pretty easy according to my doctor. And they give me prescriptions for amoxicillin 200mg that I have to take 4 pills before I go to get my teeth cleaned or any dental work for the rest of my life. They should tell you all that when you get closer to surgery. You cannot get your teeth cleaned for 6 months after a joint replacement anyway but keep your teeth clean as possible. I thought the infection was only a problem for a little while after surgery but found out it is the rest of my life. I would say your doctor or the hospital should tell you all this when you are closer to your time.

I was going to keep him in my hotel for the first 2 days for a quiet environment and that is step/stairs free and then take him home and stay with him there and get him acclimated. I plan to have a hospital bed delivered to stay on the first floor for a week or so. I’m wondering if I should forego the hotel stay and take him directly home to avoid getting him in/out of a car a few times? Thoughts? In terms of supplies, what do you recommend? I sent him a robe, Velcro pants, a leg lifter, a grabber to pick up things, some pillows, ice packs, toilet risers. Anything else in terms of personal care, clothing etc that would make life a little easier? Thanks!

You sound well prepared. The big things will be the walker and loose pants and shirt. The raised toilet is very helpful too. The day of his surgery he will be walking in the hospital with physical therapist. They will make him get in and out of a fake car and go up and down steps before he leaves. My opinion is to take him home. He needs to start getting used to steps. Especially in his house because he will be dealing with that for 3 or 4 months. And they will start him on PT the day after he gets home. I had to go to PT but don't have it at their home. I just think you helping him more at home longer might be better but that's just a guess on my part. It sounds like you are doing great on preparations. I hope and pray all goes well for him.

@@GaryForgingOn - many thanks for the detailed and sage advice! I need to double check on the PT after surgery as the surgeon said it isn’t necessary but I disagree. One more question, where did you find that you sat the most after, chair, bed, sofa? Thanks again, much appreciated!

@@angelam5013 that's a first for me, never heard of a doctor saying physical therapy is not necessary after a hip replacement. But maybe there is s a new procedure. I'm just a patient recounting my rehab. I sat in my recliner most of the time. The first week or so was tough getting in and out of bed. Raising that leg. And we have a normal height bed. Not a raised one. Ice packs help but are tough to get on that hip but if you can that helps some. I had bad knees when I had my hip replaced. Since then I had both knees replaced too. But after the surgery my knee on that leg hurt a lot. The doctor said it was from all the pounding they do to hammer that new joint down into the bone. It eventually felt better. Just letting you know your dad's knee may hurt after the surgery too. And there could be a lot of bruising down the leg. As my doctor said, it is a brutal surgery. I sure hope they have some kind of different procedure now that makes it easier on your father. If I can answer anything else don't hesitate to ask.

I am glad the video helped a little. I understand being nervous. I was definitely nervous before mine and I watched other youtubers. :) So, since I already had a youtube channel I thought I would try to help others if I could. You would not recognize Smyrna now. I moved here about the time you lived there and went back to college while here. Then for a while I worked at Nissan. Smyrna has become huge with tons of stores. I do blacksmithing as a hobby. I did welding in my 20s and have worked with metal a lot so I got into blacksmithing. Whenever I retire I hope to do more welding and blacksmithing. :) I hope and pray you surgery goes well.

@@bernadettesumner1035 I don't remember twitching but I remember a lot of weakness and shakiness. Mainly it was from the weakness of the muscles. As I got further along in my therapy and then even months after therapy ended, I was still getting my legs stronger and that made everything in there tighten up. I hope that helps.

@@bernadettesumner1035 I am so sorry you are having such a rough time. I am praying you get some relief soon. Just know the hip will get better. Sleep will return. I remember how hard it was to sleep before but it did get better over time. I understand how overwhelming it can get. I guess the pain and lack of sleep adds to the AF and the AF adds to the lack of sleep. Juts hope and pray you can relax on the hip knowing it will get better. Take care and holler anytime you need to get things off your mind. Sometimes I miss these messages if KZbin doesn't let me know about them. So if you don't hear back from me it may be because I missed the message.

I hope and pray you get some relief soon. As my doctor told me, this is a brutal surgery. They really mess up the bone, joints and muscles around that hip so it is going to be very tender. If feels weird and painful but you cannot hurt the joint by standing on it. Just have to do what you can for now but more movement will get there soon. It helps a lot when that swelling starts to go down later too. Take care and hope you feel better soon. Gary
