Thanks for the great review! I was debating on whether to buy the smarLAV+ or the VideoMic Me. Your review helped me decide that I definitely want the VideoMic Me because it has a little better sound quality and not have to deal with a messy cord that could tangle or seeing a lav mic in the video. It's clean and perfect - I just wish I could get this product NOW. Been calling around asking nearby stores and dealers with no luck finding it ANYwhere. Finally called RODE and discovered that this is a brand new product and it isn't sold anywhere yet. Argh! :-) So if you want one, it will be released early end of November/early December in stores or you can pre-ordered (which is what I did) and wait for it to be shipped.

Audio is not my strong point, but I must congratulate you on a fantastic review. Watched all the way through and found it thoroughly informative. Well done! Now - question! Which mic were you generally using for the review? I noticed it was a wireless mic when you were out in the field, nevertheless it sounds very good. Im not an audio person and am not 100% happy with the voiceover audio on my videos, although your audio sounds great!

+iftibashir Thanks for commenting. The mic I used for the other areas in my video was the RODELink Filmmaker kit. I did a review on the gear a little while ago and have found it to be very good. In my other videos I have simply used a lav mic plugged directly into my camera. Hope that helps.

Hey great to see your channel is growing well. Congratulations. Inside the VideoMic Me works well within about 1.5 / 2m as long as the room is quiet. The sock just reduces a little if the high frequency but not significantly. You can use the mic without the sock inside and it works very well. Hope that helps.

There is not a lot of lightning connection mics available as yet that perform the same job as the VideoMic Me. I did read about using the supplied lightning to 3.5mm adapter that comes with the new iPhones but from what I read it has a very poor anologue to digital conversion so it would not even suit using the VideoMicro Mic on a cage with your mobile.

Could it be used for recording voice overs on the go? Is there a 'proximity effect' ie. does the sound pick up more nice low frequency 'bass' sounds when very close to the end of the mic (with dead cat on as a 'pop filter')? Thank you
@GaryDmedia

TIA
@GaryDmedia
@GaryDmedia 8 жыл бұрын
+nicky glover Yes the VideoMic Me works well with the iPhone series. Just something to think about, distance is paramount in capturing good audio. If you get more than 4 feet away you will have to be in a quiet environment. Hand held mics are best for interviews unless you both have lav mics. To be sure about the windscreen blocking the camera try this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rGbZep-rgNeArLs

great info, just one question, how far from the mic when attached to a device will it effectively pick up audio
@GaryDmedia
@GaryDmedia 7 жыл бұрын
+bill griggs the tests I did found that it depends on how much noise you have around you. If you were recording on a busy street corner you could no be more that arms length. If you are in a fairly quiet room like a class room you could be 3 to 4 meters away. It is quiet directional.

I really would like to find a microphone that would work to record my daughter singing on stage. Would this one be suitable, or will the sound be too far from my Galaxy S7? Thanks
@GaryDmedia
@GaryDmedia 7 жыл бұрын
+Bcvammen It is very difficult to record children singing from a distance. I personally know the challenge being a father and grandfather. A directional microphone is the best option but from experience I think that you would be disappointed with the result trying to record from a distance. The problem is there is so much background noise at these events. The key is proximity. Get as close as you can. The best option would be to clip on a smartLav+ microphone plugged into a recorder (ie mobile phone) and record the audio separately, but that can be a challenge because you have to synchronise later. Sorry no miracle cures.

Hi, thanks for the great review. I've just got the VideoMic Me and i'm not sure it's working. I saw had the rode rec app there, I downloaded this app and only see the iPhone microphone in the mic options, should i see the rode mic in the options too? Thanks for any help :) ATB Nathan
@GaryDmedia
@GaryDmedia 8 жыл бұрын
The app will simply use the active mic. The option of the IXY mic is just a preset. To test if the mic is working simply plug it in and start recording a video with the camera app. During the recording gently rub the end of the VideoMic Me and then the mic just beside the inbuilt camera. Play back the recording and this will clearly identify if it is working. iPhones will test to check if there is a mic plugged in. If it does not detect a mic it switches to the inbuilt mic so it does record some audio. Hope this helps.

Hey , can you control the input volume with this mic ? I need it for high volume music live rec and the Android original mic always sound distorted so I thought about buying this one
@GaryDmedia
@GaryDmedia 6 жыл бұрын
I see the maximum level of sound the microphone can handle is 140dBSPL. That is seriously loud! The only thing you would have to check is that the mic will suit the android phone and not block the camera and you can manually adjust the audio settings on you camera app your recording on. Hope that is of some help.

I'm thinking about getting this but had a question. I started making videos for youtube and use my iphone 6+. I usually need to stand around 4-6 feet from the camera for most of my shots. I noticed that almost all the reviews for this mic, the user is talking within arms length. Will this be a good option for me?
@GaryDmedia
@GaryDmedia 8 жыл бұрын
+eviltwinx If there isn't any other noise around you while your recording it would be ok but at that distance you will pick up a lot of room noise. Be better to have a lav mic on yourself or even a close boom mic. Always better to have the mic as close as possible for dialog.

I get a clicking/crackling noise when listening to the playback. I not sure why that is. Do I need to do a level adjustment on the iPhone? If so, how do I do that? For reference, I'm simply using the iPhone video app to record.
@GaryDmedia
@GaryDmedia 9 жыл бұрын
+Jeremy Womack Distortion sometimes can be at the mic. The VideoMic Me is very sensitive and even with the windscreen a loud voice or strong breath from your mouth could overdrive the mic. If that's not the case you may need to turn your iPhone completely off and back on again to reboot the native iPhone app to default auto gain.

Can you use this with iPhone/Android phones to take calls? i.e use this to enhance call quality from your end!! Please respond!
@GaryDmedia
@GaryDmedia 8 жыл бұрын
Yes it definitely can be used for calls. With earphones plugged into the back of the mic you can use it as you would a headset. The mic will be a little better than the onboard mic because of its ability to reject unwanted background noise. Modern phones use a combination of mics on the device to help perform the same job but won't match the VideoMic Me. The downside is that it becomes a bit bulky for this kind of application unless you had it setup in a cradle, maybe in the car.

Great video. Does Røde make a similar microphone that records in stereo for the iPhone 6+ ?
@GaryDmedia
@GaryDmedia 8 жыл бұрын
+Pétur Stefánsson thanks for such a good question. The short answer is no but there is a good reason. These microphones use the headset mic input which is only mono and not stereo. The only way to obtain stereo with your iPhone is to connect via the digital input- lightening connector. Rode make a stereo microphone called the Rode i-XY Stereo Mic but this could not be used for the purpose of videoing cause the mics would be facing the wrong way. It is designed primarily for stereo audio recording. Hope that answered your question.
@peturstefansson
@peturstefansson 8 жыл бұрын
+Simple Audio Tips Thanks for your answer. Do you know if Røde is planning to release a stereo version? Since I am mention this I really can't understand why they didn't made one, maybe a marketing issue. +Simple Audio Tips Hi again, I was curious and googled a little bit about different headphone jacks. My iPhone 6+ has a type that is named TRRS witch support both stereo and microphone functionality. Here is a good website about these types of jack --> www.quora.com/What-is-the-difference-between-3-5-mm-jack-in-mobiles-and-laptops If I understand these information right then these TRRS jack should work with stereo mic? If you take a close look at the jack on Røde microphone it comes with the TRRS jack.
@GaryDmedia
@GaryDmedia 8 жыл бұрын
+Pétur Stefánsson The apple headset jack is TRRS and uses the CTIA configuration. These 4 pins allow for stereo listening on the earphones but sadly only mono on the microphone. The tip is the left earphone. The first ring is for the right earphone and second ring is a shared earth wire for both left and right earphone and the mic connection which is the sleeve or the 4th ring. Hope that clears it up. You will see that from the illustrations on the web link you sent me.

What's the sound like if you are shooting from 2 meters?
@GaryDmedia
@GaryDmedia 8 жыл бұрын
+Dee Dee Good point. The level drops but the mics ability to reject noise from behind stays the same. Remember with any mic a rule of thumb is if you step back and double the distance from the mic you half the power (or volume) Hope that answers your question.

This is my first time viewing you and I think you have a gift of expression and imagination! I am new at all this video and audio stuff. I think there are terms of art - app dependent and sync - I could use some help understanding what is what- meaning if I use this MIC your are reviewing do I need an app like RODE REC or will the audio automatically sync to my video. I am using an iPhone 6 plus. I plan to create video for uploading to youtube and really want to avoid any editing if that is possible meaning wedding the audio and the video as I take it is preferred, I am so short on time. I intend to create 1-3 minute informative pieces. Thank you for your anticipated cooperation in attempting to answer my question. If I asked the wrong question feel free to add an answer that will allow me to shoot video with audio and upload as is in one easy stroke ! Thanks! mjk

+Michael Kotarski Thanks for asking the question. The mic will be ideal for the iPhone you have. You don't have to buy any other apps. Just as you would record video and audio at the same time with the native camera app on your phone you do the same with this mic. The phone just simply turns off the audio from the built in mic and uses the audio from the mic you have plugged in. All synced together as with the inbuilt phone mic. Hope that is off help.

Just to verify: you cannot monitor the audio with the headphone jack of the VideoMic Me? I have an iPhone6.
@GaryDmedia
@GaryDmedia 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking the question. The VideoMic Me works the same way as the iPhone supplied headset. Some apps allow you to monitor audio as you record and others do not. FilMic Pro is one of the best apps. If your concerned you can test the app by using your headset and record a video with one app and then another to test out if you can monitor as you record. A previous discussion I had in one of the other comments was related to using the VideoMic me into a DSLR type camera and not a phone.

Can you plug videomic me into a camera with trrs to trs adapter and use headphone jack to monitor audio? thx
@GaryDmedia
@GaryDmedia 8 жыл бұрын
+Tymon Ruszkowski that's a really good question. The simple answer is no. The adaptor that your referring to will only connect with the microphone side of the VideoMic Me's TRRS plug so the earphone socket on the back of the mic will not be connected to anything. The other thing is that DSLR cameras have a separate mic in and earphone out sockets. You could have make up special adaptor lead that a separate mic plug and earphone jack for the camera at one end and a TRRS socket on the other to connect directly to your VideoMic Me. Then you could use the socket on the back of the mic. Hope that answers your question.
@sirTymon

+Simple Audio Tips Thanks for quick reply. But can you connect earphones directly into the back socket of videomic me for audio and use rode sc3 adapter to power it up and record audio like with rode smartlav? I could use it because my panasonic g7 has no headphone socket.
@GaryDmedia
@GaryDmedia 8 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry to say that it will not work because there is definitely no direct connection between what the mic picks up and the earphone jack. It is only placed on the back as a convenience because when the mic is plugged into a phone it switches off the phones speakers. The jack on the back of the mic has to be fed from the device it is plugged into. If your camera does not have an earphone output there is no way of monitoring audio from the VideoMic Me sorry about that.

I am wondering if anyone has compared the Rode Video Mic Me and the Ampridge Might Mic S?
@GaryDmedia
@GaryDmedia 8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Brein I had never heard of the Ampridge MightyMic S until you mentioned it. Wow, there are a number of similarities with the two mics. I wonder what the capsule is like? I will try to source one to try it out, no promises though. The purchase price would work out about the same considering the RODE comes with the fluffy windscreen.

What you didn't say in this video, is it is impossible with most of applications and the most used one Photo (video) to listen with headphones. Only FILMIC Pro allows you to monitor while recording. !

Is it compatible with android smartphones?
@GaryDmedia
@GaryDmedia 9 жыл бұрын
+Farhan Mohamed Yes the mic works on phones that will accept a tip-ring-ring-sleeve plug. This is the type of plug that you have on headset earphones supplied with most phones. With this headset you can talk and listen as in a phone conversation. The thing that can make it a problem is when the camera is blocked by the windsock because it is on the same end as the mic input. My next video helps you determine if the mic suits your phone.

@GaryDmedia

Yes all working well still. The mic is not advertised as a weather proof microphone and the earphone socket and capsule cover are not water proof but if you've seen the video I've done on how to wash a lav mic you get the impression they do resist a fair shower.

Simple Audio Tips an you please confirm > Does the Rode Video mic me while recording video on Iphone 6s record audio as stereo (Dual channel) ? or does it record similar to default single channel like the Iphone it self which many are saying very bad..
@GaryDmedia
@GaryDmedia 8 жыл бұрын
+Arjuun Sharma the mic sends a mono signal to the iPhone. I don't know of any stereo mic that connects with an iPhone's headset output. The input on the phone is only mono. Even so the mono sound is recorded on both L and R channels so on playback you hear it in both channels.

When using an iPhone, the weak link with this mic is not being able to turn off IOS audio processing, that is unless you use the Rode Rec. app, which gives an option to turn it off. But that's not much use if you are recording movies using the Camera app or something like FILMiC Pro - which is how most folks would intend to use this mic. I have found no way to get around this. To me at least, the difference in sound quality is night and day. If I record audio using the Rode Rec. app, the mic sounds as good as even some higher end condenser mics I use in other types of work. But when using it to make movies on my iPhone 6S Plus, the audio sounds thin and compressed. I wish there was a work-around for this. Kind of defeats the purpose of the mic, for iPhone users at least.

+kipling1957 Yes the noise cancellation can be a real issue. Try this, Go to setting on your phone, tap on these menus. General/ Accessibility/ then swipe down to the Hearing section to find the Phone Noise Cancellation toggle. Tap on the switch to the right to set it to Off. Give this a go and see if it makes a difference for you. Hope it's a fix for you.

@kipling1957 8 жыл бұрын
+Simple Audio Tips Thanks for responding. I had actually done that already, and although it makes a slight improvement I can never achieve the same clarity of sound as when I record using the Rode Rec. app. BTW - I use the Rode app with everything set flat, no compression or processing etc, just with the IOS processing set to off. I should add an update, which is somewhat encouraging. I think I jumped the gun a bit (my bad) regarding FILMiC Pro. After further experimentation today it does appear that when recording video with this app that audio records without IOS processing and sounds excellent. I must must have fudged the settings somehow late last night when trying to figure this out. However, this is definitely not the case when using the iPhone camera app for move making, in which IOS processing kicks in.

+kipling1957 Yes FILMic Pro is the best. Great to hear your feedback. The supplied camera app has limitations. Not a problem for the average person filming home movies. Hope you enjoy discovering more features on the FILMic Pro app.
