It has been over sixty years since I had pie and mash, in fact, closer to seventy years. I was a young airman on one of my first leaves in London. Not much money in those days, so we ended up in a place that served this. It cost a few shillings then and was really filling and tasty. A great meal then, and, obviously, a great meal now. My Dad was born in Deptford in the 1920's and lived on this stuff. He introduced me to pie and mash when I was a kid in the 70's. Fast forward 40 years and I moved to Greenwich with my wife, and Goddards had their original pie & mash shop on Greenwich Church Street. They closed it down in 2009/10 (I think), before re-opening a few years later at the new location where you are. They're bloody brilliant and the food is top-notch. They can keep the eels though!

Although Goddards P&M is good it's one of the more expensive P&M shops in London, and is aimed a little at tourists in Greenwich area. I would encourage viewers to explore London's other P&M shops a little more i.e. some of the longstanding such as Manzes [SE], Arments [S], Cookes [N], Kellys [E], Noted [NE] and some of the 'newer' arrivals such as Barrys/Maureens [E], Cockneys [W], Castle [N], and Barneys [NE]...and if you fancy a nice countryside walk you have two options 1. take the tube [Central line] to Debden, eat at Kellys and then walk in Epping Forest/Theydon Bois/Wakes Arms OR 2. Take the Overground to Chingford, eat at Robins, and then walk on/from Chingford Plains to Connaught Waters.

That took me back to when I lived in Greenwich, in Thames St. by the Cutty Sark. Goddards used to be right by the ship, and was a traditional pie and mash shop with green and white tiles. Where they are now used to be a good pub. I'm glad they've extended the menu with the lamb pie, which looks great. Davy's wine vaults isn't far away, near the railway station. Been there since 1870. When I lived there they had just a few things to eat, but I see their menu looks interesting now. Might be worth a look.

It could only have been worse by being jellied eels. I really felt for you Gary! Desert looked lush though and glad it saw off those unspeakable eels! 😄 Greenwich looking fab as always. Another great review Gary of a restaurant that isn't ripping the public off with sky-high prices like several you have visited. It was clearly great value for money and good quality too. I think a good way to get even with the cameraman is to make him eat one of two dishes that my mum loved, namely tripe and onions or chitterlings, ( may be called chitlins), which are cooked pigs intestines. There is no way I could eat either of these 2 dishes.

Another excellent presentation. It is amazing that there is such good food at affordable prices in London. A mate of mine was very keen on jellied eels and whelks, usually after we had imbibed a great deal, I was not.

I was born in a place called 'Aalsmeer' which translates to 'Eelslake'. You can imagine why. We ate eel at least once but mostly twice a week. My grandfather would catch them illegaly at night, because that is when eels are most active. Catching eels is seen as poaching and illegal since 1963 in the Netherlands. Unless you have a permit. Anyway, we ate them stewed (not nice), baked (better) or smoked (great!). Smoked eel is still seen as a delicacy in the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and some Eastern European countries. But it is very expensive nowadays.

I cannot abide by eels sadly

Happy New Year to you Gary & Mr CM. 🥳🥂 I hope you had a lovely holiday break. The eels! I think the CM deserves a formal warning for job performance on that one! To paraphrase a line I remember from a Steve Coogan stand-up show I saw many years ago... "Like a Streets Viennetta, revenge is a dish best served cold" 😂 Watch out Mr CM! 😅 The pie & mash dishes looked very good & fantastic value for money. I would imagine it's a very popular place to stop for a meal. Take care & see you soon. 💙

Hey Erin, A Very Happy New Year to You! 🎉 Hope you had a fantastic Christmas and New Year, & a nice break. As for the review, the pies looked immense, however there's absolutely no way I could try the jellied eel's 🤢 When I stayed in Aussie, I went to Adelaide, & tried the famous Pie Floater.. A few Aussie lads I met up with said I have to do it, obviously I was pretty drunk & ate it with no issues, it was actually ok! Surprisingly pretty good!! 😂 Anyway I'm not one to waffle!? Lol.... Have a Superb 2025 Erin 🎉 All the very best! Take care 💙 x

@@TelThePower Happy New Year to you as well, Terry! 🥳🎉 Thank you, I had a really nice break for the end of the year. I hope your Christmas & New Year were lovely. I couldn't do the eels either! I could pretend & say that I'd "give it a go", but that would be a big fib! 😂 Oh, yes... I'm familiar with the pie floater. A bit like a large kebab, It's the type of meal for when one is recovering from a night of inebriation! Haha. Glad you enjoyed it. How did you find your time in Adelaide? Personally, I loved the wineries & thoroughly enjoyed the Barossa Valley region especially. I remember doing a day trip down to Victor Harbour as well. That's a beautiful town by the ocean. Wishing you a fantastic 2025 as well Terry! Take care & look forward to catching up with you again soon. 💙

@@Erin-Christine Thanks for the lovely reply Erin 😊 I spent a couple of weeks in Adelaide, I stayed in a hotel in the city centre first, the hotel had pokie machines, a few Aussie guys got chatting & they took me to a casino, it was a very drunken night, fantastic! 🍻 I then got the tram to Glenelg, & stayed in a beachfront house, which was a perfect location.. That's where I signed up for the Barossa Valley winery tour, it took you to 3 different locations where you could sample as much as you wanted.. I believe the coach driver was starting to get a little frustrated due to time at each venue, & everyone over indulging, oops! Lol... I imagine he soon quit that job! 😂 The city was set out in like a grid format if I remember, & it was fairly easy to navigate around, yes very fond memories of Adelaide Erin. Always great talking, & it's very possible I could be catching up with our Gary in the near future, if time & our schedules work out. Take care & we'll catch up soon 💙 x

I used to live near Tooting Bec in the 80's and my Nan and Grandad were visiting for the weekend. I took my Mom and Nan out shopping down at Tooting and we stumbled across a pie and mash shop that I never knew was there. My Nan spotted it from a mile away. She grew up in Ladbroke Grove and then Southend during and after the war. A jellied eel connoisseur. She said for me and mom to order pie, mash and licker as we probably wouldn't like the eels. (Acquired taste proved by Gary!). She had jellied eels. OMG I was hooked on pie and mash. My Nan thought Christmas had come early stuffing those eels in her face. LOL. The place was a typical old pie and mash shop. Tiled walls. Concrete floor. It was wet from where they were doing the dishes and the cooking behind the counter! LOL. Happy memories.

It's good to see that Goddards Pie & Mash in Greenwich is doing well, as a lot of the traditional Pie & Mash Shops in London have closed in recent years, as the owners retire and no-one with a desire to take on the business. You made me laugh with the eels, never had them, but we used to visit relatives on the coast when I was a kid, who as a treat would serve up sea food. Cockles, winkles, razor clams, samphire, with vinegar and bread and butter. All went well, I managed most of it ( imagine serving those up to todays 9 year olds🤣) until whelks appeared on the table! 🤢🤢Like eating chunks of rubber band!! REVOLTING! Can’t get down from the table till you’ve finished what’s on your plate😵💫😳! So the pockets of my shorts were filled with these vile offerings which even the dog refused. That’s where the eels should have gone too I reckon. Thanks Gary, lots of fun.x
