I've finally arrived in the beautiful Emerald Isle and first on my list is the legendary Leo Burdock's fish and chips which has been a household name in Dublin now since 1913 making it 111 years old! Is this where my bad run of mediocre fish and chip ends?

Totally agree Jeff. There is either a standard or there isn't. It isn't like football where Haaland can have an awful run of form. It's a chip shop that should be so well-oiled that they produce consistency time after time, especially when living off the names of famous people. There is a restaurant like that in Sutton Coldfield (Birmingham) called the Kebabish, and Kylie Minogue, Robbie Williams and many others have eaten there because it was apparently so good. Had the wateriest, blandest curry I've ever eaten in my life and it's sad.

Chip shop curry sauce here in Ireland is amazing. Some use the base and then add the juices from the broiled chicken. However the second i seen that pot i knew it was not going to be a good review. However Gary made an honest review and i respect that

Leo Burdock's has gone drastically down hill big time, especially over the last few years. More of a tourist trap now living off it's legacy of being the oldest chipper. You can probably go to most other chippers around Dublin and get a much better fish and chips.

Leo Burdocks is a chain of chippers in Dublin. They have, (and that one especially has) been trading on the back of lazy reviews from people afraid to go against the flow for years now. . They just got very lazy on the back of recommendations in guide books. Locals don't go in there as it's a bit shit and very expensive. That's all you need to know. What you got from them is standard fare. Thanks for the very open and honest review on them (as per usual). There are loads of good chippers in Dublin, any of the italian family owned ones are usually excellent. McDonnells curry sauce is the biggest selling brand here by far, it's different to English curry sauce, but we like it. The tartar sauce is Blenders, used to be made about 300m away from where you were eating. Try a spice burger before you leave, available in most chippers and unique to Ireland. It's not spicy, but I'm curious as to what you think.

As a Scotsman I am generally wary of any fish and chip shop that isn't run by an Italian family! I remember Leo Burdock's being good (although my last visit to Dublin was sadly about 10 years ago). Sorry to see it's gone downhill.

I used to live in Rathmines in south central Dublin about 25 years ago and we had a Burdocks there. It was absolute quality , however judging by this video both portion sizes and standards have slipped !! Good to see you sampled the legendary McDonnells curry sauce....I stock up on it whenever I am back in Ireland now.

Burdocks is a very pale reflection of what it was when I first arrived in Dublin (1984). I'll never forget how good it used to be. Now it's mediocre, as I'm afraid you've discovered. One thing though: they had a technique of double-cooking (?) the batter, so it was always thick, but in a good way.

That's exactly what my last fish and chips were like from a local place here by MerthyrTydfil.. It was also tasteless fish. Very bland. Chips were similar to yours. It was all undercooked. Thanks for your review.

If your in MerthyrTydfil, go to Trago mills. The take away is also good. Had good and bad at Trago mills with fish and chips. But they have a nice menu selection in the restaurant. Hunters chicken my favourite.

I am so sorry for the bad experience. You so much looked forward to being in Ireland. The batter of the fish was not cooked long enough. The batter was 'raw'. The chips were limp. A disappointment. 5 out of 10 is very generous of you. The sauces packed in plastic were produced in a factory. Let's hope that the next place will be much better. Ireland is supposed to be well known for excellent restaurants. Thank you for the review. Hope that you did not become unwell.

A friend of mine several years ago set up a fish n chip shop. I couldn’t believe what is involved to produce great fish n chips. After months of researching, testing & trialing his product was excellent! I think most places become lazy & lose the love!

@@GaryEats Great you are both coming up North soon to do a review for us. May I recommend the 'Crown Bar' right in the city centre. It is the oldest or one of the oldest pubs in Belfast, dating back to the Victorian era. It's fitted out with Booths and Snugs and maintains the theme of that period. The menu is vast but the Irish Stew and Champ and Sausages onion gravy are my favourites. Great Irish quality and at very reasonable prices. I also agree with Trevor's recommendation. Longs is outstanding for fish and chips, and just across the road from The Crown. Just giving you the heads up. Take care. Sharon

In the 70s and 80s Burdock's was wonderful. This was before Dublin became a global tourist destination. Then, come the 90s, they expanded all over city to cater for the influx and changed their menu and cooking methods. They were one of the last chippers to continue cooking with beef dripping which improved the flavour no end. Sadly, no more. Also, smoked haddock was their stellar dish, not cod

Originally, batter wasn't meant to be eaten, and even now, many people in different areas avoid eating the batter on fried fish. Its primary purpose was to protect the fish during frying. Once cooked, they simply peel off and discard the batter, and enjoy the perfectly cooked fish. Regarding scampi, I prefer breaded over battered as it always feels less greasy. As usual, great video, Gary! Keep up the good work

Hi Gary, I'm Irish and I can tell you that you didn't go to Leo Burdocks on a bad day. Irish fish and chips are very mediocre, I didn't know good fish and chips until I moved to the UK. Anytime I bought fish and chips in Ireland, I rarely ate the batter, always the same soggy and thick. I think you are right when you say they should cook the fish in the same batter as the scampi. I hope you enjoy your trip. I can recommend Shanahans on the Green for steak (pricey) and Sole for fish. A good pub meal can be had at Searsons on Baggot Street. (Reasonably priced) Enjoy 👍👍👍

No Gary, whether they were busy or not, that batter and chips were not cooked properly. Our fish and chip shop in Tring heaves with customers and they cook theirs crispy and golden chips.

Lovely to see you in the Republic Gary. Dublin too far from Tipperary. Odonnells curry powder/ sauce is sold in the shops. Shall I be surprised about the batter, certainly not, happened loads of times to us. Tramore, best fish and chips, batter crispy, fab. At least the scampi was good. Great show again Gary😂

Hi Gary Yes those fish and chips looked shocking as soon as you opened the paper. They looked virtually inedible. The best things with it were the mass produced condiments which were the curry sauce and the tartare sauce! However, the scampi did look very nice and redeemed them some what but overall 4/10 for me. From what I can read they are living a bit on their reputation from the past and like a lot of eating establishments find it hard to maintain early excellence. Excellent as always mate and onwards and upwards in Ireland

Gazza, a fish and chip shop in Leicester I used to go to sometimes did exactly the same, and the batter always tasted slightly odd as well but I could never figure out what it was, whether it was yeast or something else. I can't describe it as 'vinegary' because there was no vinegar in sight, but something was off. But I loved the chunky pieces of bread with butter, and the chips were to die for. But fish is the star of the show, and if that is crap then all the supporting actors in the world cannot make it a 10/10 dish.

Another Great video Gary. Dublin has so many great food places, I would recommend the Vintage Kitchen restaurant and if you want quality street food the Meat Mafia truck do great food also(the beef lunchbox was amazing last time I was there). Enjoy Dublin it’s a fantastic place. All the best 👍
