I have taken my intake off many times on my 91 Mustang to modify things etc and i have lost probably 10 of those little snap rings that hold the TV cable to the bushing,I'm gonna put a new engine in October, I'm looking forward to finding all those clips ha ha ha,i know they are buried somewhere under that engine, i ended up making a brass bushing to go into my throttle body, haven't worried about that plastic bushing going south in years.

Hi Gary, I had the AOD in my 88 Lincoln rebuilt this past winter. It engages perfect, no slippage or anything like that, but there seems to be a wicked drop in line pressure when engaged in reverse or any forward gear. TV pressure is maxed (cable is as short as it can go, pulled tight with zero slack) estimated to be about 70+ PSI at idle in neutral. When road testing the car, it shifts like there is insufficient TV pressure (feels almost like the TV cable is fell off the throttle lever at the throttle body or set way too long). So far I have tried another valvebody, fiddled with the TV pressure, added friction modifier to the ATF, nothing seems to change anything. If TV pressure is set to 35 PSI as per instructions, it goes even softer. Worst issue is early 2-3 upshift with little to no 3-2 downshift unless speed is under 20 mph. The car is an 88 Town Car with HO converted 5.0, no additional mods, transmission is an earlier unit with the 3-4 accumulator piston and has a B&M TorkMaster 2000 RPM stall convertor. Rear axle is stock 3.08:1 open. Any ideas what could be causing this condition? Great video, thanks for posting!

I'm getting ready to buy a junk yard AOD 4x4 to learn how to do a rebuild. This video is fantastic! My current truck AOD is acting up with bumpy shifts at 1200-1500 requiring a kickdown push.. guessing that's the cable. Also skipping when accelerating on an incline. Thinking i over-filled it. Pulling the pan, doing filter/gasket to let some fluid out since i know it's overfilled. great video!

Hello! Great Video. I plan to rebuild an AOD with 4r70w internals to retrofit into my 71 Cougar. Current plan is to purchase two cores and rebuild the AOD. The goal is to get the deeper gears from the 4r while maintaining the mechanical operation of the AOD. Have you seen this done and are there any pitfalls I need to look out for? Past experience has been in TH350s, 400s, and the C6 that currently resides in the Coug. Engine is a 400Hp/420Tq 351C. Thanks in advance.

Mr. Ferraro, have you considered doing a video on modifying an AOD with a 4R70 gearset? I am interested in doing an AOD build that would take advantage of the steeper gearing offered by the 4R70W. This should help my big cammed Cleveland come off the line a little harder without resorting to a big ring gear in the diff. I would also be interested in other hard parts from the 4R (or anywhere) that might make my build live a little longer. Perhaps also a link for those of us looking for the Exedy parts used here? Kudos on the channel. It seems to be helpful in directing business to your store. The MB story on Yelp was some good press for you and AAA-1 Trans.

hey, thanks for taking the time to film, i know it slows you down although you are really fast and efficient. i have a 4R70E, and have a p1744 code, and no TCC engagement. im thinking the spring in the bypass clutch control valve is broken in the valve body or it is hung up and not seating. i seen you find a broken spring on a taurus in another video. is it possible that the seals on the shaft going into the torque converter (that fluid is pushed through to activate clutch) could be bad and im loosing pressure there? when the lock up tries to engage, there is a light scratching sound (like its just barely making contact) and rpm changes slightly before it shuts the lock up off.

If it's a yellow plastic piece with a small stem and o-ring, that just mean the pan has never been dropped before. That piece is in the hole where the filler tube goes, at the factory they just install the filler tube and knock the piece into the pan

Had a very quick question. Liked your video, by the way, which gave me the impression that you know the AOD Trans like the back of your hand. My best friend, who owns a well know California hot rod shop, gave me an AOD that has been completely gone through with a 2400 stall converter attached, and has been sitting for 10 years under the workbench and has never been installed since the rebuild. I've never even had the pan off. If there is nothing oxidized or rusted internally, what parts/gaskets should be replaced before running this behind a build 408 stroker in my 1970 GT350 Shelby Convertible? Or should this transmission be completely gone through again? What is the shelf life of one of these transmissions after rebuild? This was originally built to go behind a sbf 427 stroker in a 34 Ford. The trans has never been filled with Trans fluid. To be honest, I'd be afraid to drop this off to a trans shop where I don't know the people! It's hard trusting people these days, I have several friends who have had transmissions rebuilt, and it seem like they break again a week after the 1 year warranty is up! LOL! My go to guy has retired, and his shop is 200 miles away since I've moved. Seems like all the good old boys are either dying off or retiring!

I learned alot now on this transmission since doing research myself and it seems there is alot more to it. I then found lentech in Canada who has experience with aods.. but wil cost me another 3.5k. currently thinking what to do.. Hey just got done watching your video and gives me the confidence to tear into my AOD. But I have a question I'm pretty sure you can answer for me. It's a 92 AOD 4wd. I got it rebuilt for my truck while I was doing alot of work to it. Once I finally got around to putting it all back together the warranty had ran out. After the rebuild its still doing the same thing. Acts like it's low on fluid so it take forever for the gear to engage out of park. Then when you drive it's jumps for 1st to 2nd as soon as you give it any throttle. I've adjusted TV cable, changed the valve body, flushed the fluid, changed filter. And when I dropped the pan, the bottom of the pan was full of the black gunk. In your professional opinion, what do I need to look for?

I just had a AOD rebuilt and they obviously didn't test drive the mustang and now its seems to miss 2nd gear and go right to 3rd and if you give it full throttle from a stop it doesn't want to shift at all till I left off the pedal. What's going on with this transmission?

@@GaryFerraro No when you drive it normal it acts like it shifts into 3rd gear and misses 2nd it.. it literally bugs down the engine when it shifts from 1st to 3rd gear I think it shifts out of first around 3000 rpm them drops to about 1000 to 1500 rpm when it shifts to 2nd.

oh yea.. the PTC converter.. that is not a stock stall converter.. you might look it over and see if you can find a build number on it and call PTC.. or talk to the customer if they have the invoice so it can be reordered.. this also explains the 7 clutch pack.. its an upgraded unit for higher horsepower/drag race type abuse. and i bet he does not have the proper ratio adjuster on the carb .. or he has added a spacer to the throttle body and changed the effective length of the throttle valve cable.. feel free to delete these gary..... wayne..
