That's pretty sad to see a solid piece failing like that. I can understand clutches getting worn or bearings failing--- but for a solid piece to crack like that, it should be unacceptable. There's no excuse for it. I almost feel like the replacement should be steel, if its that bad. This is why I only buy manual trans. lol

Hey Gary, just watched this video as I sit in my 14 Silverado waiting for a tow… No forward gears but has reverse. Do you have a link to the service information or flow chart.

Pretty much, you would have to drop out the valvebody first and check the #1 checkball, if ok, then the 1-2-3-4 piston is cracked, trans would have to come out

Great videos!! So, who makes the best bulletproof heavy duty transmissions for these vehicles? I own a 2011 4x4 Suburban and I’m keeping it forever? I keep my paid off vehicles and build them back better and stronger than factory. So who makes the best replacement transmissions??

@@GaryFerraro , checkball was ok ( put new ones in when I built it ) had P0603 and other communication codes ( ECM/PCM ,, Body controller/TCM . So I got me the TCM/solenoid assembly. Watched your Video again and then it hit me . I changed the Pumpassambly when I built it , put the 4 Stator seals on without taking the expansion rings off the old stator . So sometimes it worked just great , but if I came to a stop at idle it lost forward gears , at times . But when I stopt with a little throttle applied and kept idle up it never lost gears . I correct it tomorrow and let you know . Thank You for the great Videos , I'm doing transmissions since 1976 , Watchrd just recently You tube on trans , 99% are not useful you the first one makes professional sense . Thank You .

@@GaryFerraro ok , I put o-rings and the 3 teflon sealingrings on stator , checked for cracked piston and drum ( 3rd time ) , changed TCM ( verified checkballs ) , reprogrammed at dealership . Drove it 50 miles , no 603 nore 0741 code no more , but every now and then after coming to a stop neutralizes in forward , reverse ok . I pulled it out 2 times after rebuild , pan is clean , airchecks like in your video .Works without delayed engagements , no flairs or bumpy shifts , kick downs , all like in a new vehicle , but every now and then no forward after coming to a stop .

Hey Gary, I have a 6L80 that I rebuilt 40k miles ago due to the torque converter sending metal shavings everywhere. I couldn’t replace the pump housing, they were on nation wide back order. It works great except for when it gets above 200, if I put it in park and then shift to drive it will act like it’s in neutral until I give it a little gas, then it will lunge and it pulls fine. Is this due to the pump scaring? It will not do this all the time, it’s random. Another symptom is when you stop fast it will lunges after it stops. What do you think?

2018 GMC 2500 6L90E 57,000 miles did this, With TCM fuse pulled Truck will drive in 3. Clean fluid no debris in pan. after a fluid and filter change, Transmission shifted perfect for about 3 miles, slowing to about 5 mph, felt like trans was bumped into neutral . Sticking Check Ball?

Hi there gary, my 6l80 forward gears goes on and off constantly, and then no forward. Could this also the check ball? Goes for a second then nothing. Reverse is fine. What could cause this?

Great video once again. If the number 1 check ball were to be shrunk down but stuck in the separator plate could this cause a No Drive issue also? It was stuck on the upper valve body side and blocking off the port to the drive brake not allowing it to float and move between the two bathtub ports. Ive actually got one here at the moment with this issue, however i also found that 2 of the solenoid pressure discs to be split and it had 3 codes. P0756, P2714, P2723. Kind regards mark

The root cause of the 1234 drum / piston cracking I couldn't find out yet . I'm shure it happens when the vehicle comes to a stop , leaving the shifter in drive , neutralizes at take off , that's when drivers step on the throttle , eventually the trans catches with high RPM and then the cracks happen . I worked in the early 90's in ford / L / M dealership and we had the same problem with the AX4S . I found the root cause at the 2nd rebuild : the little ( mushroom look like ) plunchet sealing off against seperatorplate , was hanging up . So people went on the throttle till the plunger came free - tires barking , front trans mount broken , N to D accumulator spring broge , and forward piston cracked . So I started putting the light spring back in the valvebody and replaced the plunger with a check ball . FORD updated the alu.piston with a steei version but still had the same neutral after stop condition . They replaced the mushroom plunger 9 years later w oil th the AX4N . I talked to FORD engineers at FORD school in Marietta, GA but got blown off in 1992 , talked to Lavonua Transmissionplant in Michigan ( about the AODE TC shudder too ) but got blown off . I'm working on that 6L80 neutral symptom now , I got that Escalade since 7 weeks , loosing my a.. , but I will figure out the root problem .

Did you find a cracked piston or bad check ball?
@ToDaMn2 жыл бұрын
Same symptoms on my 6l80.. What do you do you recommend on the rebuild aside from the piston or drum replacement? or should I just go with a monster or jasper reman? leaning towards the piston drum because when cold it will a drive, somewhat. Once it heats up I believe the crack expands fluid thins and then it will not move at all. Reverse is strong regardless also no codes...
@GaryFerraro2 жыл бұрын
Wel, could go either way, may want to drop the valvebody first, do not have to pull the trans to do this
