I attempt to capture fine art images from Clevedon Marine Lake in this video. As always, things didn't go to plan!
A couple of weeks ago I travelled to Clevedon to witness and photograph something quite special. The Marine Lake fills up with seawater just a few days each year. The source of water comes from the sea breaching a protective wall. The spillover only happens during a spring tide and a day or so on either side. It's quite a thing to see!
I quite enjoyed the challenge even though, as always things didn't go to plan, now there's a surprise.

I thought you had a great day there! I was expecting to see the honey pot picture of looking straight up the pier showing the board walk and seats but no you did not go there, however I really liked the main picture that you got. Clevedon is a lovely place to be with a camera. Thanks for taking us there...

Your videos are a joy whether your plans pan out or not. Your easy style, sense of humor and you explain your thoughts and process for your compositions so clearly. You have to make the effort or success will never be within your reach. Believe me, your photography is exceptional and well worth the time and thought that you put into it. Wishing you great rewards for your future efforts.

Few things are more valuable to most of us than seeing you fail to get the shot you were after, or to see you share your disappointment. It reminds us that we are not terrible photographers just because we fail - often - and makes it easier to cope with our disappointments and failures, remembering that even the best regularly fail. Cheers.

Tide heights are predictions based on a forecast barometric pressure and, as I'm sure you know, the actual barometric pressure can be higher (leading to a lower actual tide height) or lower leading to a higher tide height. Mother Nature will decide as always! Nice images thought and I particularly like the wide images of the pier makes a change from the "along the pier" angle.

Mmm, been to Clevedon for the pier and long exposures and that was not so easy as the beach is treacherous. Plus, the tide is dangerous as it comes in so quick there.

I feel like the fails (failures!) are an inevitable consequence of any endeavour... They do make the rare and illusive wins richer however! Sylvester Stallone remarked once that people enjoy seeing him get smashed and really expected it... Sigh! Clearly then, like a classic Greek tragedy, the (ironic) value to the audience is somehow fortified by the extent of suffering, coupled with the journeyman's ability to remain stoic and happy. Bottom line seems rather trite, but it's the journey not the destination that tests us all! 🤠🙈

Gary what makes a picture "fine art"?
@GaryGough
@GaryGough Жыл бұрын
That’s a million dollar question! I guess, if it looks abnormal then it could be classified as fine art. I tend to call landscape photography fine art when it’s both abnormal and minimalistic. There are plenty of counter arguments to that though.
