And this whole time, I’ve been trying to put out information on avocado trees, not Alvacado Trees. And to be totally honest, I don’t even know what an Alvacado Tree is. Just kidding, thanks for the wonderful compliment.

Would love to hear your thoughts on how to manage avocados in areas exposed to the nasty north diablo winds... I'm in Fairfield and I'm sure you got some of the nasty winds yesterday.

My good friend had a tree of his snap all the way down to the ground that was getting big that I sold him two years ago and thriving. Damn Diablo winds. The best thing you can do for Diablo wins is to never put a steak on your tree and grow from a seed

Gary Gragg's True Plant Stories we certainly understand why they are called “diablo” winds. Back in about 2000, I had the privilege to speak with a Woman on the property She was born on. There was a huge windbreak of cottonwood trees there. She informed me that Her Father had planted them. Further, that He would grow wheat, and that the Santa Ana winds would usually greatly reduce their harvest of wheat germ. They would plant wheat irregardless because the bread made from it was so very delicious. I recall that She was born in 1906. I find it odd that there were no avocado trees on the property. Apparently avocado trees were not common or perhaps even available in pre deco Orange County Ca. Or, perhaps this family simply didn’t like avocados 🥑

I have a seedling that is two years old and a over 7 feet tall and bushy. I kept tipping it every three feet of growth. The leaves are bigger than my hand. Couple of people on the Facebook pages have had luck 3-5 years on fruiting from seed. What is your experience?
@ShaggyDogg01283 жыл бұрын
I'm trying to find out maybe a certain variety will fruit from seed faster than others. I've always had better luck growing the west indian style avocados but I also live in florida so that could be the main reason.

Yes.... prolonged staking will lead to the tree becoming weak as it will increase leaves and flowers, and not invest in strengthening branches

Not another Avacado video...just kidding! Great video Gary👍

No kidding. But everybody keeps asking for more avocado videos so I do the best I can. I started thinking today of how much more content could there possibly be on the subject matter? I’m sure I will think of something.

I have a “Holiday” Avocado. It’s staked up well. Drives me bat crap crazy how it’s terminal apical bud growth immediately seeks ground like a vermiform worm. It’s been in the ground for a year now. I plan to stay with it, at lest give it a couple years more. It’s in a very small planter 5’ 1/2” X 18’ surrounded by concrete. I would have opted for a “Gem” but at the time, couldn’t locate one. The following week - my local nursery obtained some grade A Gem stock of “Gem” - possibly out from Brokaw. Planted one of those at my Brothers house. It seems to me that “ Gems” seem to have a marvelous upright growing canopy. Perhaps my small surface area growing space is better suited for a “Holiday” rather them “Gem”. I suppose it really boils down to the root stock incorporated - I have no idea of what rootstock is on my “Holiday”. Hopefully / one that is resistant to water born disease. I would think so, bring that it was touted to be “The smallest avocado tree“ . Funny that we have more then one type of alleged “smallest avocado tree “

Holiday is frustrating because of this. I think not best to just let it mound on top of itself over time.

Gary Gragg's True Plant Stories I absolutely agree, by reason that the more leaf mass is exposed to sunlight. More photosynthesis can occur, Consequently, more berries that the tree shall produce. After all, that is my main objective in planting the tree 🥑
@pinball0003 жыл бұрын
that branch is over an inch thick how hasnt it barked up? Not enough movement or is it just a super fast grower? old topped trees put on growth like that, how old would that branch be?
@ScaryHairyGary3 жыл бұрын
When they are staked they think they don’t need to be strong. The best thing for an avocado tree truthfully is just never have a stake on it and be germinated in place and grafted in place and this would never happen but everybody wants a tall tree in a nursery and we force them into unnatural growing conditions and are surprised when they fail.
@pinball0003 жыл бұрын
@@ScaryHairyGary i agree with the no stake until you want to shape it for long term, 4 inches sway in the wind on the tie down without rubbing on a post would be ideal but near impossible in a pot. i'd always buy the unstaked just knowing its more apical dominant or not
