I've found that black fabric pots do the same thing. I grow my avocados in 20 gal. pots (with handles) The pots are cheap. To each his own =)

We just purchased two full size wine barrels to grow our avocado trees. I'm concerned they may get "top heavy" and topple over. Do you think that is possible? I have a Haas and a Fuente about three feet tall, We have drilled holes in the bottoms of the barrels going to add rock to the bottom - then citrus/palm soil and plant in a sunny location in the wine barrels. Do you think this will work for outside planting? Our soil is clay - so cannot plant directly in the ground.

Can these pots be in the ground with the tree. I planted a huass avcado. I didn't think it would survive. Well two years later and it's growing well. It's doubled in size. But I planted it to close to my house. I'm worried about my foundation in the future. Do you have any suggestions 🤔

I like the idea of naturally dwarfing them in containers but have you heard of anyone planting the container in the ground permanently to dwarf the tree? Or maybe lining the hole with weed barrier to dwarf the height?

Can the avocado tree be covered on those nights when the weather is too cold? I'm in Sacramento. We don't get too cold, but during winter, there are the occasional 30 degree nights.....

You could always cover them to protect them from extreme cold events, but even the most tender avocados are hearty to about 28° and even with those tender trees if the temperatures drops a few more degrees they will simply die back a little and sprout out in spring.

You can cover it with Christmas lights (incandescent not led) in the winter months to keep the tree warm - I live in roseville and that’s what’s kept our avocado tree alive

Go to their web site where current inventory is listed along with prices and lots of other useful info. I bought a couple last Sunday, pricey but I couldn't find a quality Reed anywhere else in the area. Paid $300/ea for 15 gallon very healthy looking substantial little trees, the smallest size available....just checked--no Gem listed. I can get decent 5 gallon avo.s local to me (Chico) for $40 but the varieties are very limited. Also you can find limited selection on Amazon for maybe $150 including shipping but the very small healthy Reed I got that way had all the dirt displaced from the root ball dooming the tree due to inadequate packaging and apparent pissed off shipping handlers, they don't like heavy boxes and make sure to brutalize them. golden-gate-palms Make sure you do your homework on avo trees if you haven't already, there are several crucial criteria specific to them surviving/thriving when small.

I live in Colorado and have a really small avocado "tree" that I got started in a glass of water last fall. I've pinched it back twice and the first time it grew a second branch right on top. But the second time it didn't do anything. Plus when I put it in the sun the leaves have burnt off. What am I doing wrong and what can I do to make it grow?

Hi, please never place a young tree in the sun. When young they needs lots of protection. Also if the tree has roots, it is time to plant it in soil. Water will make the roots weak. Good Luck

The square wood containers are better than those black ones, and look way nicer. The Black ones will be too hot in the summer. I would just make one myself out of wood and line it with rubber epdm pond or roofing liner so the wood lasts decades.

The gem he has are basically just clippings. They're in small plastic sleeves. When I bought mine about 2 weeks ago he had about a dozen left. Gem is hard enough to find as it is and when you do you're going to pay. Supply and demand.
