How to Correctly Use Epsom Salt on Cucumber & Tomato Plants with Mix Recipe: Don't Over Use it!

Epsom Salt is misunderstood and often over used. It is a fertilizer but it only supplies plants with Magnesium and Sulfur. It is not something plants need every month. This is how you mix it and how I use it on tomato and cucumber plants when needed. If your soil gets magnesium and sulfur from other amendments you don't need to use it. Use it with a plan and purpose.

Thank you! This is so spot on! When I first started gardening, I used to use a handful of Epsom salts in the planting hole (tomatoes) and then diluted (as you showed) at least monthly because of the myths you just talked about. Another reason I did it - is because I heard it made tomatoes taste better. 😆 Thankfully, I never ran into an over-use problem. Now, better educated, I can attest - NOT using it hasn't diminished any health with my tomato plants or the fruit I harvest. It's simply one less thing I have to worry about and that's part of your point, I believe. Thanks Gary.

I have just started a veg garden. I have a small raised bed. In I have growing. Carrots, beetroot, onions, garlic and peas. I bought two potato sacks and the potatoes are doing well. The tops have been nibbled by slugs. I have not put slug pellets down. I have harvested some potatoes which were lovely. Better than Cheshire potatoes. I will take your advice on the web and start to harvest when I think the veg looks ready. Love your videos.

I use Epson salts at the beginning of planting. I then spray my tomatoes and peppers plants with low dose of aspirin. Since I've started this process my plants produce so much more.

One of my tomatoes plants only got flowers and little tomatoes but the rest two plants got nothing. Also peppers plants have flowers but no fruits yet. Please advise.

@@nkausar1 try using the aspirin water and if you have Epson salt put a 1/4 cup around the plants. Either before it rains or you can water them to get it down in the ground.

Gary, my tomato leaves are curling upwards, cupping. From the bottom older leaves up. No discoloration, leaves are dark green. I am container growing. Temps are 25-30 celcius. 10 hours of sun. Feeding organic slow release granular. 5-10-5. Help!

Question Gary, we have tons of mulch from redwoods, oaks, and madrones the redwood mulch tends to be very acidic, is it ok for my veggie garden? Also does mulching encourage more earwigs? We tend to get those also.

I cant answer on the earwigs. I use a ton and dont really get them. Probably depends on your area. I think the acidity issue balances with rain and other organic matter as it is a slow decay. But you could alway spring the paths or soil with some garden lime. Just a bit and that will balance worries. Great info! My beans' leaves are yellowish green (not yellow from dryness) They are supposed to be a darker green (from what I see in you tube from other people's plants). Probably needs nitrogen the most. This is just for magnesium and sulfur. A quick feed of ES might help but it is usually nitrogen. QUESTION: I’m having an issue with aphids on my zucchini but my tomatoes and all my letters I’ve tried insecticide soap and Neem oil, but they keep coming back. Drenching the soil in neem once a week for 2-3 weeks should help with that, thats what I do anyway when I get them in my pots. Till/disturb the soil regularly too so they can't establish.

Neem will kill lots of good bugs. Fungus gnats aren't usually a problem outside, but if they are fungus gnats, mosquito bits targets those, without killing beneficial insects.

I'm no expert, but with them being young, it could be too much sun, too hot, too dry, too wet, or lacking nitrogen. With the drying leaves, I suspect too much sun or the soil may be compacted and not holding water well.

No dont do that. It is way too much concentration and will cause issues. 1 tablespoon in a gallon of water. Quick soaking of roots. Yeah I really screwed up. I put Epson salt down for my pear Trees. I put to much down and killed the blooms on one of the trees. Bummer. Be careful using epsom salt.

Nope! You do not need to provide Mg or SO42- in any case UNLESS you have a soil test that tells you that you need these nutrients. To put this in perspective maybe 1 soil test in 100,000 indicates the need for these nutrients. You need to be very specific on this, PLEASE!

I dont agree using very low doses. It is to feed the immediate growth area. You can get a soil test for sure. The issue is over use and over concentration. I do say with compost and amending it is not necessary. It also has benefits in container, but it only needed is small quantities.
