Ever since I found your channel, I have been amazed and delighted at the sheer volume of helpful advice you provide. This video is great for me because it consolidated the information on seed starting, and touched on each aspect of it. It made me want to run out to my garage and rearrange all my lighting as soon as possible. I was also grateful about your comments on humidity domes. I used them last year and lost almost everything under them. Fortunately, I only had two domes, and the plants without them did fine. Kudos also on your sharing your mistakes, like the little fungused celery plant and the onions drying out. I know you were answering questions, but some of the answers to other folks' questions provided helpful tips about things I never even thought about before, such as the foil and angling the lights, and will definitely aid me when I DO get to rearrange my lighting. In addition to the UV acclimation, taking the trays into the sun every few days helps with fungus. Fungus really hates the UV. Last year, I started noticing damping off fungus in my trays, so I started the acclimation process early and gave them peak sun incrementally every day. Cleared up all the fungus in less than a week.

I know this is a year older, but Thank you Gary for putting all this seedstarting questions. Since all the seeds are not equally germinated I did lowered the other end of the lights on the newly germinated ones opposites of the first germinated seeds in order to get more heat, and moved some of the plants with the first germinated kinds. So far so good with this process👍. By the way your seedlings are very healthy. Thanks for this inspiring video it is very helpful.

For labeling there are file folder tabs that can be places along the edge of bottom trays to slip small paper tags in also. They are pretty sturdy and the larger hanging folder ones are about 1/2" x 3". I have also ran masking tape along the edges to write on with a ball point and the labeling lasts through the time seedlings are in the trays.

Very helpful. I also encourage people to read the comments. For example, I didn't know that about sunlight/ uv helping the white fungus on seed starting mix. I looked over so much of your past videos now. So much help. One question that I have involves all your extensive videos on Hydrogen Peroxide and Baking soda. Not so much how or when to use them but more in the line of which to use. I know this is not the format to answer such an extensive question, but I am just putting it out there. Hydrogen Peroxide vs Baking Soda. Which is better? Why did you seem to move away from wettable sulfur ? Why not wettable sulfur ? What are the advantages and disadvantages of using these products i. e. one over the other ?

That UV tip for fungus is a good one. H202 is allI pretty much use on tomatoes. Timing is more learned as inspect the leaves and if I notice an issue the get sprayed. I also know leaf spot comes in June so I give them a spray 1 or 2 times that month. Baking Soda was easier to make and get then wettable sulfur but I prefer the later. No real advantage or disadvantage. The key is for you to set up routine and stick to it. That is our biggest problem. Great video Gary, thanks. There is however one thing that I think doesn't get mentioned enough. Plant acclimatization to UV rays is very important, but it's also important for the plants to acclimatize to other outside conditions such as wind. I have found over the years that installing a mini ventilator on each level of a growing station produces sturdier plants. The ventilators only need to run maybe 15 minutes every 2 hours but it makes such a difference. Another positive side effect is that the top of your growing medium stays dry and is thus less susceptible to fungal growths. Just an idea.

Thank you so much! I’m brand new to seed starting under lights. I purchased the 4 foot, 5500 LED lights from Walmart that were recommended by another youtuber. I have not seen a video on light spacing concerning LED lights. There’s plenty of videos on starting seeds under lights. Not so much on how high to have LED lights from seedlings. I in the last 2 days saw some seedlings leaf curling? Wondered what was going on. I had my lights 2 to 3 inches from my 2 and a half week old seedlings? Only watered when top of soil dried out. Watered from the bottom. Have no damping off? Every thing was perfect except for that leaf curling and some were just looking dry? Now I know my lights were too close to my seedlings. I stopped this video and immediately moved my lights up about 3 inches to give me 5 inches above the seedlings. I will continue to monitor the leaves to see if they need to be any higher. Thank you for saving my seedlings 🙏

I'm learning a lot from your videos. I'm a first timer (in northern Wisconsin) trying to start native wildflowers to transplant about June 1st. I lucked out and got a rack and grow lights like yours with heating mats and timer so I think I'm set. I'm doing the cold moist stratification right now and will be planting about March 1st. I'm planning for 6 weeks growth after germination and then 2 weeks hardening before transplanting outside in June. Congrats on your first year. If the pots truly decompose quickly, I would use them. Some do take a long time to breakdown and inhibit root growth a bit. And if a part of the container pops through the ground, into the sun, that piece often wicks water out of the root system. I am not trying to sell you but we sell quart fabric pots made from recycled plastic. They can be reused. The roots do grow into the fabric but a knife down the side frees them up for planting. Whatever you pick, I would pot the roots out and plant. And just buy a product you reuse over and over. I use a 1/8 chalk line type rope/string to hold my lights. Put a loop in the rope and use a small nylon tie behind the loop pull the tie really tight then you can pull the rope through the tie to raise or lower the light easy. It is a lot easier than chains.

Thank you for such a thorough video!! So much good information. I've had a really hard time starting anything in the brassica family in my indoor seed starting station - a few different types of kale, broccolini, arugula, have all had the same issues. The seeds germinate and after maybe 4-5 days the cotyledons shrivel up and the sprout dies. My home is usually 70-75 degrees, I've got a fan running 24 hours, I have lights on 16 hours a day, i've experimented with more water and less water. Any ideas for what else I can try? Any other family of plant i grow in this set-up does well, and the same brassica seeds direct sowed outside have grown well. Just trying to crack the code so i can rotate the plants in more frequently.

I started my onions Jan,1st in zone 5. Started my leeks on Jan, 20th. First time growing leaks so I was not sure how much of a head start they needed. Well now I know, wish I had started the leeks with the onions. They are doing fine but are about 1/2 the size of my onions. My onions usually go in the ground the last week of April to the second week of March, depending how much snow has to melt off. I like having robust onion plants to plant, they hold up much better when we get a frost and if I need to cover in case of a hard freeze. I am sure the leeks will be fine and dandy. Hope this helps. I overseed onions and leeks into trays as Gary does.

Hi Gary, I brought my bell peppers inside to go dormant and overwinter in the house and they are doing fine except for my hot pepper plants. They never did go dormant all the way and they still have a full growth of leaves on the plants but now the leaves are starting to go lymph and the plant looks sickly. At this point should I assume it is not dormant now and repot with fresh soil and place in a warm location with good light until it is time to go outside again. (Zone 7) Also, do you think you could do an update on your Overwintered plants at some time in the near future? Love your channel. It makes my day!!

UV light cannot penetrate glass. So, unless your window is open, your seedlings are not getting any UV light, even if they are under a very bright window.

I'm looking for an extra strength heavy duty 1020 tray that will hold a lot of weight and will not crack.... Is there a brand besides Bootstrap Farmer that anyone could recommend. P.S. I'll be importing these trays into S. Korea.
