My Yukon golds are still green and health in grow bags, first year growing potatoes after 60 some years gardening. I have store bought Russet potatoes chitting in my back room. The window for planting in my area is coming up soon, Aug 1-15 (Sylacauga Alabama). It has been in the mid 90s everyday with high humidity, and the occasional late afternoon thunderstorm. Lightning took out my phone service last Friday. I have a replacement phone module on order. Even if the heat kills me, and it probably will, next week I need to top off my raised beds with compost, sow seeds for turnips, Danvers, and Navone Gold Rutabagas, start seedlings for cabbage, and harvest out a monster Russian kale plant. It is so large, that it has uprooted itself. So far, Hungarian Yellow Wax, Jimmy Nardello, Lipstick, and Corona Di Toro peppers have been the best producers. The Hungarian Yellow Wax is a super producer, and will replace Sweet Banana peppers in my future gardens. Also, the Martino’s Roma, yard long beans and rattlesnake beans have done very well. I’m not impressed with Sweet Dumpling Squash and Yellow Scallop Squash, and won’t be regrowing them. My zucchini, White Scallop, Lemon Squash, Burgess Buttercup, and Baby Butternut are still going strong and still producing. I will be regrowing them. The Straight 8 cucumber has produced some enormous cucumbers, the National Pickling has done well, and the Lemon Cuke, while not large, has more than made up for its size by quantity. It is still putting out a lot of cucumbers. My Seascapes are back to producing strawberries. Thus far, this year’s garden has been very bountiful, producing more than I can eat. I’ve given away half of what it has produced to friends, family, and neighbors. The fun part is listening to them talk about the new food I am introducing to them. One neighbor, Doug, is absolutely amazed by the Lemon Cukes, and shows them off to other neighbors and his family. My sister-in-law, and another neighbor, Mildred and her husband Ben have never eaten Swiss Chard, and absolutely love it. I can wait to introduce them to Pak choi, and Komatsuna later this fall.

Great video! I've noticed that farmers that grow acres of potatoes wait until all the plants have totally died before harvest. Also, seed production from well known producers do this. They harvest in the fall like in Oct from May plantings, no mid-summer harvesting. Have you noticed this? How do you feel about this? Thanks!

The ones in the bed died off. The ones in my fabric pots were a little early. Their late harvesting is probably based on the variety. I am growing early potatoes that are ready in like 90 days. So I did a dumb thing. I dropped this huge rack of chitted potato pieces before planting (they went everywhere) and I could not tell them apart. 🙄 I went ahead and planted regardless (100 gal grow bag). The potential problem is - some are early season (80 days), some mid season (100), some late (120+). They went in about 70 days ago ... so I figure my best bet is to wait another 30 and then go for it. And, it will be a great big 'tater surprise.

Here in the U.K. people only seem to grow potatoes in July from seeds bought online from producers that deliver hold back some seeds in cold store. The inference being that saved seeds from your early plantings won’t grow this year. Am I missing something? Love your channel.

I’m wondering, when you pull up the plant, there are small buds by the roots on the very bottom of the stems, that look like they would grow new plants, if those would produce potatoes if you put them back in. I’m going to try it and see.

Hi Gary. Have you ever tried the Ruth Stout method? I tried last year and didn't get very many. Composted the straw, and dumped a load of wood chips where I had tried the potatoes. Guess what's coming up this year thru the wood chips !! haha Things just want to grow : )

There a lots of ways to grow. But if you set yup the soil nicely, you dont need to do a lot of extra. I would encourage you to experiment if you have the time. Hello! I live in Central Florida. I planted Russet potatoes in buckets a month ago (1 per bucket). I do have sprouts (some bigger than others). However, it appears that they are growing VERY slowly. Btw, Im using Is miracle grow potting soil. Please, help! Im not sure if i should give up on them. They are about 2-3 inches long (the sprouts). Any advice would be appreciated.

Not sure how Florida heat affects them but all you can do is keep them watered. If you only used the soil and didnt amend it well with fertilizers and such, give them a drink of water soluble fertilizer like every 2-3 weeks. Good luck. If you did, give them a big drink of water soluble now to get them on track. You said the last time I said you are contributing to the Chesapeake bay issue I was stupid. You sir need to do a soil test or not fertilize so aggressively. Fertilizer the way you and most other youtubers say to apply is a waste. Maybe do more research, read scientific articles. More Fertilizer and sprays are what is hurting our environment. I do not believe in the conservation peoples strong opinions, but I have seen and lived it in my garden for the last 5 years. Soil is the key

Not stupid I am sure. You cant soil test very bed as they are different in home gardens. Farm size and standard large scale plantings, yes. What you are missing is how these home gardens use minimal amounts that do no create runoff. Excess fertilizers, water soluble types, excess sprays, on larger plots, lawns and similar are the issue. I disagree with you on home gardens. There is a bid difference between organic slow release and water soluble types.
