Yeah thats one of the catch phrases that dont make sense. Holding moisture is fine. Not letting excess water drain through and leave air pockets behind is bad. Uline is very competitively priced but they have a 2-bag minimum for each, at $39 per bag. If you bought perlite also, that would be 4 bags (@160 dollars), just so people know. @THERUSTEDGARDEN Жыл бұрын
True. And I say you only need 2 ingredients. It the big bags you buy its eye candy for like for filling containers and raised beds. There just isnt enough it to matter. It has little value. In seed starting and potting up it can have value for drainage at about this ratio. But its about the quantity that matters and I probably should have clarified way back. A few pieces popping up isnt much but eye candy.

Peat moss is an incredibly unsustainable ressource, please consider using coco coir instead!
@THERUSTEDGARDEN10 ай бұрын
I did research. Coco Coir is quite damaging from clearing forests is South America, to cost of processing is fossil fuel and water, and cost of shipping across the seas and the carbon foot print. Canadian bogs are managed quite well. Not perfect but better than people think.
@garthwunsch Жыл бұрын
Peat moss mining is highly destructive to both the environment and climate. It is a massive carbon sink and once disturbed, the carbon is immediately released into the atmosphere as more greenhouse gas. Yes, it is renewable, but it may take a 1,000 years to regrow... literally. Last spring I developed a peat and coir free mix that worked beautifully... never had such good seedling growth, but I do use very high grade compost. I deal with fungus gnats etc. by using biological controls. The peat fraction of my mix is made from composted and finely shredded wood chips.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN Жыл бұрын
Not everyone has access to high grade compost unfortunately. So saying dont use it, really doesn't work at this time. Its all about choices. As I use peat at times, I refuse to buy plastic water bottles and such. Swap out what we can do to help the environment. Cheers.

@legalfictionnaturalfact396910 ай бұрын
Rusted garden, unless he edited it out after your reply, I don't think you said not to use peat. He was just saying what the problems are with it for anyone interested. As far as a good compost goes, that's something we can make from our kitchen scraps and yard trimmings, well curated materials of course, but our common waste materials nonetheless.
@justsayin560910 ай бұрын
Your recipe would be nice....
@garthwunsch10 ай бұрын
@@justsayin5609 I keep modifying my potting mix depending on what materials I have, but here's a good starting point... 2 parts shredded aged wood chips (this is my peat moss component, but unlike peat moss it isn't high acid so I don't have to add anything to raise the pH) 2 parts finished compost (whatever kind I have, or sometimes several kinds... Johnson-Su, thermophilic, vermicompost etc.) 1 part good garden soil 1 part perlite. Growth was like nothing I've ever seen in nearly 70 years of having my own garden... dad gave me my first plot when I was 10 and gave me free reign to do and learn - God bless his ancient soul... he died at 97. I'm presently working on trying to eliminate this commercial input with biochar. The perlite is strictly for drainage so the biochar may do the same job and also provide a strong nutrient base. Have 27 tomato plants under lights in my workshop with attached heated greenhouse in central Ontario zone 4a...Snow Country! My first goal is to see if there's such a thing as too much biochar in a mix - I have reason to believe this is possible. Once this is ascertained, I'll run a test with good high nutrient potting soil augmented with varying rates of perlite and biochar to see what effect each has on growth. I'm hoping the biochar works, but I think the challenge is going to be how much water it retains. The mix has to drain well. Hope this helps.

Have you tried coco coir instead? It’s way more sustainable than peat moss and does the same thing. From what I’ve been reading peat moss is not sustainable at all. Have you heard this? Thoughts? 🙏🏼🤍🌱
@THERUSTEDGARDEN3 ай бұрын
I have used it but I dont feel it's that much more sustainable for these reasons. Forests are cut down for coconut trees. Tremendous amount of water and energy used to process it. The cost in greenhouse gas tanker ship it overseas is very high. Bottom line is European peat was badly managed but Canadian peat is well managed and bogs are repaired for future decades. But it is a cost on either side. Thanks. Thanks so much for your support! Cheers & Thanks, Gary!
