My husband has been a home builder for over 20 years and I asked him about the circular saw blade. He said you need a bi-metal blade with fine teeth to use it on the plastic pipe. I have seen this idea on pinterest, but in purpose of feeding earth worms. I may have to give this a try! Thanks for sharing!

I live in a condo and have had to bring in my own soil so this will really help me keep what I brought in to last longer. I imagine putting a pot on upside down to hide it with a potted plant on top to make it look decorative. Thank you.

Allowing banana peel to dehydrate in the sun (say, on a flat concrete surface or gravel), will result in a crumbly dry matter in a couple of days; easier to add to compost.

Simpleman 1 I use food grade five gallon buckets. It works great. No hassle/expense of worm beds. I live in Arkansas, and you hit solid rock if you try to dig very deep. Is why I'm using raised beds. I do it for the extra worm castings. I seperate the worms, and put them back into the bucket with the new greens n browns. I put the castings in the garden where it seems to need them the most. When working in the garden I can just turn around, and drop my garden waste in a bucket. I keep a fifty five gallon drum full of leaves in the garden. Just drop a handful of them on top of garden waste.

Great video, I'm interested in doing this! How do you know what kind of radius this would cover in your garden? Any research or evidence you know of for how far out this will have an effect from the pipe?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN6 жыл бұрын
So this is a composter and watering hole. No research but experience. I am figuring a 3 foot radius. Which is pretty nice for extending root systems in the bed.

Hi Gary, how are you? It's now 2020, do you still use this method? If not, what would you recommend and how would you do it?

So this was good at my old house as I didnt have space for big compost. I am not doing it now as I built a really larger composting area with multiple bins. @THERUSTEDGARDEN6 жыл бұрын
You don't have to stick to 10-10-10 just as close as you can. Any concerns with plastic is typically due to sun UV degradation. A buried tube is safe in my opinion. But I understand. I breath more garbage in walking to my city job from buses in a day, then a tube will give me in a life time.

Gary: As you mentioned in Organic DIY compost source of Carbon is Dry leaves or paper, Nitrogen is green grass or Coffee. What is source of Phosphorous/phosphate (PO4) and Postash (K)? what is ratio? I read good source of phosphate is animal manure but too much phosphate is not good for soil or underground water.

Can you add Grass Clippings to it too?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN6 жыл бұрын
Very little. You could easily put in too much and the odor would be rotting grass.
@chrisgreen13316 жыл бұрын
Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) can you then add grass clippings in water and use the water after it’s soaked for a couple of days as a nitrogen feed for plants?

Setting up our raised beds this spring. I fail to see the need of having pvc or any bucket of any kind when all one needs to do is just bury the composting material in the soil. It will still break down, the worms will still find the food and it saves the expense. Am I wrong? Plus PVC is toxic.

I have clay soil, which I planted in for the first time in 20 years. My plan was to start building the soil & hope for a few good years weather wise while I improve it. Well, Sunday I got 8 inches of rain, then 2.5 on Monday, followed by more today. My whole yard had standing water & I've lost 30 tomatoes & peppers. Hoping to add some sand & more compost before fall. How many years did it take you to change your soil?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN6 жыл бұрын
So Id the raised beds and planned them to be away from the crazy run off I get. Lots of peat too loosen up the soil. 3rd year, drainage was fine. But raising them made years 1 and 2 manageable.

@THERUSTEDGARDEN6 жыл бұрын
I don't have that worry. The cap is tight. Might even be able to do a screw cap. Some suggest even less holes in the sides toward the top for rodent issues. But this issues of bugs and rodents is better than an open compost pile.
