Great job Gary, love the easy going narration as you work. I’m working on an old Mongoose Hilltopper and did the same removing paint from rear triangle, may coat similarly to how you did it. I’ve also used a non-narrow wide chainring on a Kona 1x rebuild and it still works great. Do your thing with the parts you have. Keep up the great work man!

Hi..Gary. .just finished watching your video and it was very satisfying seeing you build a much better bike than the original. ..The xt / xtr V brakes were a game changer in the day as were the Tioga nobby ...The un 72 BB was an upgrade to ,being lighter than standard. ...Nice retro bike but watch out for those pedals...Thanks for sharing 👍

I am surprised no cable stop ends for the frame or levers? XT and XTr V brakes are game changer and a must on any Vintage. Very nice job on video and build.
@garysprojects

Ahh haha yes good eye I rarely use them in my builds since I don’t have them, just use straight cable, haven’t noticed any major issues yet. Cheers man the upgrades def help! appreciate the kind words thank you! 😊
@JohnPilling25
@JohnPilling25 2 жыл бұрын
Those xt v brakes are getting very hard to find and can be extortionate. Since you have a steel/aluminium frame on which the paint work was really beat up I would have had the whole thing grit blasted clean and then powder coated. You can get that shimmery colour back by having it coated silver first then re coated with a translucent blue/green. They come out really nice. Done it once on a Gary fisher full suspension frame and my guy in palm city, Florida charged me $75 for the blasting and powder coating. It was so worth it.
@garysprojects
@garysprojects 2 жыл бұрын
True true! Having it blasted and repainted would have been way easier !

My method for stripping paint off a steel or aluminum frame set is a real time saver: professional glass blasting. Then it can be finished with wet paint or powder coat. Yeah, powder coat is almost sacrilegious, and I'd never use it a valuable frame, but it has the advantage of being super durable, and on a bike that's not for resale or some sort of museum piece, it can be the way to go. In any case, professional glass blasting isn't cheap, but neither is my time.

The rust converter will stop working properly if you contaminate the bottle with a dirty brush. I always try to pour a little out into a cup and brush from that. Then discard any excess. It's always a bummer to toss any because it's expensive.

Look forward to seeing that Gary. ...lots of potential with the Bafang motor. ...Some of those utube videos of the bbso2 make the average ebike from the bike shop look pretty slow not mention expensive. ...@ least the bafang can be retro fitted to some of the old classic 90s bikes because theres plenty of room for the battery. ...
