HOW does a REVERSE OSMOSIS Drinking Water System WORK?
Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water systems look complex, but do you every wonder how they work? There are all kinds of filters and hoses and a tank but how can the tank possibly work with only one hose attached? If you want to learn how a home reverse osmosis drinking water system produces super pure, great tasting drinking water for your family this KZbin video is for you and I’m going to show you how, right now!
First a bit of history. Reverse Osmosis was first invented by the US Navy during World War II to purify sea water into drinking water for use on submarines. So you know that it’s particularly effective at removing minerals like sodium from your water, in fact up to 95% of the mineral content is removed!
A Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water System is perfect for you if you’re looking for an inexpensive source of "super pure" drinking water for your home. For a Reverse-Osmosis system to operate flawlessly the raw water needs to be pre treated to make sure there is no hydrogen sulphide, iron, manganese or hardness present which would quickly foul the membrane. waterestore.ca...
A Reverse Osmosis system is connected to your cold water plumbing. The process starts out by passing your water through a Sediment Filter to remove dirt particles in your families water before going through a Carbon Filter to remove chemicals like chlorine or chloramines. People always ask why most Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water Systems have two carbon filters, one right after another, that’s to give the carbon enough contact time to remove all of those chemicals from your water source.
Then the water is forced through a semi-permeable membrane which allows pure water to pass through it, while rejecting the contaminants that are too large to pass through the tiny pores in the membrane. As this water is being purified the membrane to continually cleaning itself, washing the rejected contaminants away from the membrane and down the drain. Because Reverse Osmosis water is produced relatively slowly it needs to be stored in its own small pressure tank to make sure that there will be plenty of water to be dispensed quickly from the faucet for your family. A dedicated faucet is installed at the kitchen sink to dispense the Reverse Osmosis water and if you have a refrigerator with an ice maker and water dispenser the Reverse Osmosis system can be connected to it, giving you cold "super pure" water as well as nice clear ice cubes which leave no residue when they melt in your glass. waterestore.ca...
Oh and by the way, why does the tank have only water line going to it? There is a “T” connector after the last filter so water can flow either to the tank or the faucet or potentially both. When the tank is filling and no water is being dispensed through the faucet water flows into the tank. When water is flowing to the faucet it primarily comes from the tank with a small amount coming straight from the RO system.

Thanks for clearing something up for me. I had the wrong idea of how the system works and have heard of horror stories where water bills increased by hundreds of dollars. I thought that once the tank was full, no more water could cross the membrane and the incoming water (under tap water pressure) would bounce off the now impenetrable membrane and just flow out the drain pipe. In other words, no shut off valve. Thanks for explaining it!

Thanks also for integrating the automatic shutoff valve into your explanation. Been in the water business full time for three weeks now. RO's are the most complicated water treatment to learn about. Also the most difficult to work on. Just like anything the best way to learn is to go hands-on. I've noticed there's more differences in models than just the membrane sometimes. Like the new model we install has an "absolute" filter. And the order is sediment, pre-carbon, membrane, absolute, and post-carbon (polishing). As I understand the absolute we use is just to take out one or two nasty things that the rest of the system isn't certified to take out. That's a pretty self-explanatory benefit if the absolute is preventing something nothing else will. So is the benefit of having dual pre-carbon filters that they don't have to be changed as often? Even if so that doesn't change the frequency of change on sediment. If you wanted the best of both worlds I suppose you could put another carbon filter in where the sediment usually goes and put a separate pre-filter for sediment before the whole unit. Perhaps that's what you would do if you were putting an RO in a house with hard, chlorinated city water and they weren't going to buy a softener and backwashing carbon filter? I'm really geeking out on this stuff. This will be my long-term career for sure.
@water_estore
@water_estore 4 жыл бұрын
The two carbon filters are for capacity but also contact time. An extra sediment filter will not remove hardness. If customer has hard water with out a softener (within reason) they would just need to replace the membrane more often but it would still work.
@gordoneigner7565
@gordoneigner7565 3 жыл бұрын
A question about this filter system that was described. Many carbon filters call for a 5 minute rinse after replacement I didn’t notice that you had a rinse step in the replacement video, should that be done to avoid membrane contamination?Also I was suprised to learn a little while back that the holding tanks only required about 6 psi.

How does the water divide within the membrane? How does it know which is which? Is an ASO valve absolutely necessary for good production? My generic, 6 stage R/O system w/ 100 gpd membrane, did not come with an ASO valve or restricter other than a small piece of plastic with smaller diameter hole inserted into the 1/4" tube on outflow. However, my system seems to produce R/O water properly. Also, you may wish to balance your audio levels here.
@water_estore
@water_estore Жыл бұрын
Water is forced through under pressure. The low mineral context water goes through the high mineral content water does not. The ASO valve shuts off the water when the tank is full. Yes you have one version of the flow restrictor

I’m looking to get a RO system for my 1/3 acre farm. If a system says 2,000 gpd how much will it do in say an hours cycle with my sprinklers? I’m using a standard 5/8” hose to each section when I irrigate.

You would need to add tanks to accumulate the water and then repressurize it to feed your system. Thsi video explains how a commercial system works. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXSkf3yilpKBd7c

I have a huge question. My mother bought a reverse osmosis filter (5 stage) that has no drain. She has no idea what an R.O. water system is. It's membrane canister (the 4th one) has no outlet for the waste water. It's membrane is actually a ceramic type filter. I am not sure if it is actually a reverse osmosis membrane. I am not even sure if it is actually a reverse osmosis water system now after watching your video. What is itthen? Just a 5 stage water filter? I am afraid that my mother has been scammed by shady individuals.
@water_estore
@water_estore 3 жыл бұрын
Yup, it's just a 5 stage filter. No membrane, no drain, then it's not a reverse osmosis system.

I made a comment on your shorter how RO systems work video. This is much more in depth but on a chemistry level what is happening? Thinking back to science class I remember a semipermeable membrane allowing water to cross a membrane but crossing from clean water to salty water. So wouldn’t the dirty water attract the clean water? Also, how is the clean water kept separate from the dirty water inside the housing? Looking in the housing I just see two holes in the bottom. How does the ASO valve operate? I have one apart right now trying to troubleshoot it.
@water_estore

This is reverse osmosis, we use water pressure to force the water through the membrane, not osmosis where is equalizes on both sides of the membrane. The water that goes through the membrane goes to the tank through one exit and the water flushing the membrane goes to drain through a different exit. The ASO compares the water pressure before and after the membrane and when the pressure after reaches an acceptable pressure, telling the ASO that the tank is full it shuts off the flow. Typically is the ASO is problematic we repalce them with a new one here waterestore.com/products/reverse-osmosis-aso-asv-4000q

Best tutorial, but I’m perplexed: Our RO system faucet is a 3 tube design. We want to replace it with a single inlet (water) design as it matches our sink better. Can we simply route the black “purge” line directly to drain vs. having to pass through the RO spigot? In simpler words can I bypass the RO spigot. Forgive my lack of nomenclature. Thanks, JB

Moved into a house with a reverse osmosis, but only gives about have a cup of water before loading all of its water pressure in the kitchen, I looked for the system in the garage and noticed it doesn’t have a tank or reservoir. Thank you for your helpful videos! I am on well water and am researching RO systems. I already have a sediment filter, carbon filter, and UV light for my whole house system, so it seems redundant to get an RO system with these filters again. Are there simpler systems for RO that skip the upfront filters?
@water_estore
@water_estore 3 жыл бұрын
No there really are not and you will find that in spite of those whole house filters the filters in the RO system itself still get quite dirty, so you need a 5 stage RO system.

I wouldn't recommend drinking well water even with big blue filters and a UV light. Is a softener being used to keep that UV light sleeve from getting calcium buildup? Remember, if the sleeve is coated with calcium/magnesium the UV light can't penetrate through the build up and effectively kill bacteria going through it.

I inherited one of these systems in a house I just bought. Mine has a pump on it. What does this pump do? When I plug in the pump, it continues to run. Should it shut off on its own? And my tank is empty. How long will it take to fill up this tank?
@water_estore
@water_estore 10 ай бұрын
The pump pushes water through the system, ours don't need a pump. The pump will shut off when the tank is full (well it should) It could take upm to 4 hours to fill the tank.

Great video Gary, thank you, just a couple of questions though, how often do I need to change any of the filters, and secondly, in one of your other videos regarding bottled water, you said we should consider how long the water has spent in the bottle from when it is bottled to when it is drunk by the consumer, so is this the same with the "water tank for the RO system, with it being plastic is all I'm thinking? 👍
@water_estore
@water_estore 5 ай бұрын
Filters need to be changed every 12 months. Yes, we want to minimize the contact time with water in any container but since you are using water from this every day or at least every month, there is no concern.
