22:49 - What do you think is the future of employment, now that we have robotics and AI and what are your solutions if in fact we see a lot of jobs go away? How would you solve the problem of a society with 20% less jobs available? Which would increase unemployment. What if we lived in a world where majority of the people couldnt find a job and only half the people were employed? How would you solve for this in a creative way?
#Timestamps
3:37 - I am on the app musical.ly and have a following of over 600,000 people. I am one of four musical.ly reps that live in New York City. What should I do next?
7:45 - What's your career advice to DRock and how he can progress his career?
9:58 - Being truly self-aware, I know that one of my best talents is the energy I bring to the table. How do you harness an emotion that comes through the energy I develop and share with other people? How can I monetize that online?
15:40- Aside from patience and thinking about the long game, what are some things that someone like me should be doing to grow his audience?
19:26 - How do you deal with the top performer in your business that generates a ton of business but is toxic to your company culture?

Love Jason Calacanis, always have, love his old video podcasts, watched them all, love when he hosts TWIT (more than Leo himself). I really don't know why, I think it's because we have similar personalities (but he's better at it). The straight shooter, tell it like it is, don't apologize for your opinion. He also gives great advice and topics he talks about are usually right in the area I could use help with over the years. Fantastic guest this week :) I haven't finished the Daily Vee 80 yet, but I had to pause it to watch this one first.

Gary and Jason - thank you for the frank advice on leveraging your personal brand! It's something I'm trying to figure out in my space, and I appreciate every bit of information on this topic! Jason - answering your employment question: I believe when current jobs become obsolete, new positions will continue to emerge. Also, I see the traditional college model changing drastically as e-learning grows. Parents/students are beginning to question the ROI on paying big bucks for a degree, so colleges will need to adapt to a lower cost business model to survive.

Great episode Gary, as usual.#QOTD: I feel that humans will always value human interaction. Think about getting automated messages now, you just hang up. As far as 20% less job availability, it would mean more push into rural areas and out of cities. Less people would need to live in cities due to less jobs. Cost of living in those areas is lower, more people possibly producing their own crops. It must be mentioned that someone has to produce, QA, program, repair, etc. I guess you could possibly build machines that fix machines, but we aren't close to that level of AI yet, IMO. You already see certain groups of people living more down-sized and minimal lifestyles, ie tiny homes, communal living, etc. so maybe this would become more of the norm for the majority.

Definitely seeing that trend having grown up here in Los Angeles. While many are moving to LA, there are also many LA natives moving to places like Austin and Nashville because of all the factors you mentioned. When much of work is digital/mobile, people can live where they want to live, not where their jobs force them to live. Different trends for real estate and lifestyle in general for Millenials vs. the previous generations.

Re #QOTD People will always value human interaction. Robots may manufacture things, repair things, and even provide basic services for us, but we're no where close to them being able to replace a warm body and curious mind. As for employment, there are endless ways we can create work for ourselves as long as someone else is willing to pay us. It's just a matter of getting creative.

QUESTION OF THE DAY Hello Hello Jason & Vaynernation, The topics of discussion keep getting closer & closer to socially challenging issue, which really fascinates me. In regards to People losing jobs to automation (AKA technological unemployment) I think the answer lays beyond simply individuals pivoting rather a collective societal vision of An access economy (AKA Natural Law resource based economy, Look it up). In order to get there Universal Basic income & social wage (Free transport & Health care etc) could help. In summary I think the best mindset for us to have is that of a polymaths (Diversified skills) in order for us to recognise & apply insights from a variety of skills. Im really keen to get a dialogue going on this if anyones interested. Peace Find Elight

great insight! It will be interesting to see how it plays out. It seems not all personalities and character traits allow everyone to be polymaths though. That has been my experience at least. I think it's totally possible though for a good percent of work force!

Artificial Intelligence is a huge conversation that needs to happen. I don't think a majority of people in the world understand what is about to transpire. AI could very well mean the automation of jobs we previously thought impossible for a computer to handle. A great example is Watson from IBM. It created a trailer for the new movie Morgan. It created a subjectively attention grabbing trailer... Think about what that means. Granted we have not reached the level of what we perceive AI to be, but all we have to do is keep going in the direction of innovation that we are, to get there. AI is going to be huge and we should at the very least talk about how to prepare for it's inevitable arrival.

QOTD: Jacque Fresco, The Venus Project, and a book of his called "The Best That Money Can't Buy". Jacque, his organization, and his book, first got me thinking about a world without employment and how we're getting there faster than we think. His ideas of Technocracy, automation, and unleashing the human potential when not stuck with doing boring manual tasks to trade time for money are worth hearing. Amazing he has been thinking and writing about this topic since the 30's. Thanks Gary!

Employment for unskilled workers will be our biggest challenge as a society moving forward. I also think there's no easy way to solve it. There's talk of a guaranteed income for everyone but if you give people too much leisure time its going to lead to societal problems - many more than we have currently. People need to be engaged and have a purpose.

Another awesome episode! QOTD: I would start a business based on something everyone needs or desires. For example, I would start a mobile doctor business where I would hire doctor's to serve a particular community and make more home visits. People always value time saver's and by bringing the doctor to the patient you can save the patient time and give them the convenience of medical care in their homes, especially for routine physicals. The convenience of home doctor visits would hopefully encourage people to take better care of themselves.

Jason and Gary. When we live in a world of automation and machine learning the solution to jobs is quite simple. It will be a push to human-ify the jobs and products. We need to highlight the positive human aspect of creations not just the amazing technology around us. It's about the heart, soul and love that we put into a job. I am one person trying to lead this charge!

Jason is the man. To his question- coming from a 4 year college graduate (bio major) millennial who is now pursing the "YOU" economy as many of us now are- I think AI is going to swing the pendulum towards the side of job creation while also swinging back in the other direction and eliminate jobs that can easily be replaced with upcoming AI and robotic developments. However, determining the direction with the largest momentum and force is complex as heck. Luckily, I think many of us don't have to worry about such things as the era of self-employment is upon us. SCREW CORPORATE AMERICA and cubicle life.

LIFE DREAM FULFILLED! Thanks for answering my question on the show #GaryV and #JasonC I really appreciate your input. READY-SET-TAKING ACTION! I'll follow up with results! Lift Life #VaynerNation! QOTD: I don't think we are going to have a 20% employment rate. Yes, AutoPilot semis etc. will fill the streets and truck drivers will be no more but this only opens up more opportunity in the service industry. We as humans want authentic contact. By replacing these labor jobs for creative and service work we will free up a lot of welcome progress in human evolution and opportunity for more people to spend more time examining a life of fulfillment and purpose!

The way I gather, the relationship is codependent. Drock creates an outstanding documentation with flare, recording a great man, with a legacy in the making. Drocks skills have been amplifying and getting sharpened from work ethic he sees in Gary. But also arguably immeasurable because when someone is young and beating on their craft for their 10,000 hours, they are exponentially going to gain skills quickly.

I think the mobility that a personal brand gives you is still underestimated because people don't know where they want to go or how to build a vehicle who gets them there. Its not enough to have fans or followers, you have to know what you're going to actually do with that leverage.

Hey Jason and Gary, #QOTD: I believe that nations worldwide would have to invest more into education/learning science and also change the curriculum to add/make room for subjects like self awareness. With the advent of automatic tech, menial tasks such as driving, taking orders, etc will be the first to go. Until we figure out how to replicate a human brain within a computer, creative problem solving are what we hold above computing and one solution would be to push people to be more self actualized. Not many people dream to take fast food orders or drive around as a public chauffeur. As a 22 year old dance choreographer/performer, I feel safe in my own profession because computers won't be able to handle a creatively intensive job like my own.

12:11 "Building your brand online and then increasing your prices offline" have no idea why this piece of advice stuck out so much but it really just clicked for me, I'm starting out as both a personal trainer and videographer so this is some great advice for me #QOTD: I think the future of employment for "labor intensive jobs" (construction, manufacturing, etc.) doesn't look too promising but I think all the people who offer services or have some form of artistic talent (personal trainers, photographers, musicians will always have a place). So I would focus my attention on educating people about those options and finding ways to monetize their "passion" which is essentially what I'm doing with the blog I'm starting, by bringing people on the blog who have gone this "non-traditional" route for the purpose of showing people what they did to get where they're and being honest about what it took to get them there.

Daily Question Answer: The first thought I have on this is the idea of the pendulum. It's currently swinging really hard towards non-industry work, computers, sales, and information. There is a growing need for trade workers, yet people don't like to go through the demands of the schooling and such to earn a trade. Soon the need for people willing to actually work will hit as the other areas reach their limit. There will be a shift in what we view as valuable in our society, and how we effect commerce. As you mentioned in this video, there will be an undeniable need for SKILLS, beyond base talent.

Nobody knows me yet. The biggest problem I believe we'll face is the beginning in which no one knows us. It's my responsibility to put out work, my words and my heart to the few people who will see or hear, put 'em out to a few more; repeat, repeat. Haven't got to this step, and I own up to it. Obscurity is the problem; doing something great -- especially for others -- is the remedy for obscurity. I hope that what I wrote was helpful for any of you guys and gals. Much love, Mike

#QOTD Hands down if we want to win A.I. in education is the future, everyone learning from A.I. at their own pace, mapping information to what their strengths are and making them their best and identifying their real skills and interest. As for the people displaced and left behind by technology, we will have no choice but to subsidize community college and vocational programs to give them some kind of skill that is valuable in a new society if we don't want them to become welfare dependent, especially when it comes to rural America. It may mean dramatic increases in taxes but the alternative is that we will have rampant unemployment or in desperately not leaving unskilled laborer behind we will lose in the global marketplace...

QOTD: Evolve with the times is the answer. Not all jobs can be automated so it takes a person willing to step out of their comfort zone and learn something new. Not a lot of people are willing to do that which is why they will be the most affected group. Constant learning and adapting will keep you employed. Far too many people not paying attention to what's going on around them and when the change happens and it will happen quickly, they'll be the group looking to place blame and screaming "why me". The key is to stay relevant.

QotD Answer: We will still always come up with new jobs. Robots and automation will become so precise, that "analog" products...products made by hand...will become nostalgic and there were always be a market for it. Also, jobs in Information Technology and Maintenance (in regards to mechanics and electronics) will become high in demand and pay well. It would be like the industrial revolution...but like an electronic/mechanical evolution...something similar, but driven by computers. ...this is why I got degrees in Computer Science and Computer Engineering. There will always be great opportunities in my field.

Congrats to everyone that got on the shooooow! Now to the #QOTD there's been some research into a guaranteed minimum income, where people are just allotted some amount of money (not enough to make ends meet) and they would then work part-time to make-up the remainder of their income and the true hustlers would work way beyond that and in the higher skilled sectors of the labor market, but at that point, I'd think competition for employment would become fierce due to the scarcity of jobs. -Nerdarchist Ryan

You reap what you sow! America is nothing more than a refugee camp for the world. I know that we all are a bunch of pawns in a chess game. The rich don't give a shit about anything but making more money and their selfish greedy selves. When things get bad, they will just run and hide to another country where they will live in the lap of luxury. The rest of us will go through hell. This country is finished. This country has already been taken over from within and now the stage has been set for the slaughter.

Jason's question is so timely. I'm currently reading "SuperIntelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies," which talks about AI and digital brain emulations. One point that stands out in regards to the question is-jobs will have some sort of security if the growth of basic human intelligence in AI or a brain emulation is predicted accurately enough to put safety measures in place BEFORE that AI begins to optimize itself-thus creating a super intelligent system smarter than humans.

#QOTD I think the future lies in creative industries. Even though a lot of jobs will be taken off the market, I believe a lot will also be developed. The solution: work on building something with a very strong and positive culture, allow people to grow in the areas that they do best. This will allow for not only growth of companies but also growth in new employment positions and prospects. The solution for people looking for work: focus on developing your talent, then focus on deploying that talent against people who actually give a shit.

I think to answer Jason's question, the solution for employing those that lose jobs to A.I. is to focus on industries and positions that can never be automated because the human intuition, human touch will always be required. As you mentioned Gary, driver but many others exist, medical field such as phlebotomy (would you want a robot drawing your blood?), etc.

To answer the question of the day: You answered it when you said, "in the past we've always come up with new jobs". The same thing will always occur, new jobs will always develop as long as we DON"T try to "fix" anything and just allow the free market to do its thing. People will lose their jobs, then they will go out, get retrained, and get new jobs. The horse and carriage industry was destroyed when the car was invented. But the advent of the car allowed for a new market of jobs such as, services, maintenance, selling, painting, aftermarket parts, UBER, etc. No one could have predicted this. The free market has all the answers, we don't need to try to solve the problem of unemployment, just let the market and entrepreneurs do their thing. I encourage everyone to look up the KZbin video "I, Pencil". It'll change your views, and your life. Always remember: The government does NOT create wealth, they REDISTRIBUTE it (taxes & programs). Only Entrepreneurs and businesses create wealth.

The answer to robotics and the A.I. question is simple. A.I. requires software engineers and programmers, over the next 5-10 years these industries will make up majority of the job market. Also mathematicians, A.I. requires very complex algorithms, thus creating a market for mathematicians

Next Hyype yes but for those of our society that aren't math nerds, I like others in this comment section think some form or negative income tax or universal basic income may be required for a minority of people who were too badly hit by automation..which will be a savage job killer in the next 30+ years and will only create a sparse amount of jobs reserved for the math genius/nerd types.

I agree to an extent but will have fun with the question. The kind of AI people are discussing will be the kind that can create its own algorithms, simulate them at a more effective clip. Take IBM's Watson for instance. Someone had to program the machine to learn the games of chess and jeopardy but eventually the game learned will be creating algorithms and mathematics. We can at least agree that the number of those jobs described will diminish.

This was definitely one of my favorite episodes in a long time. I loved the xanga reference. Those were the good old days It's an extremely complex #QOTD. I think solution for many people will be entrepreneurship. It doesn't have to be a tech startup or something very technical. Basic jobs utilizing specific skills, mostly in areas that are frequently being outsourced. Handyman services, cleaning services, lawn care, pet care, child care etc. These might seem menial and small but they have huge markets and possibilities for growth.

Bro this interview was deep guys well done. Ever since I started watching you Gary I have really learnt a lot and Self awareness is really something I am working on a daily basis. I also love the last question were your friend asked about AI and Machines replacing jobs. I think its a great time for us human beings to reinvent ourselves and enhance innovation. Nothing can beat an open mind not even Ai. We should just be ready to embrace it and see how it can best serve as in making the world a better place:) Much love from Zambia, Africa.

GARY VEE! I love your show and Daily Vee etc. A huge thing I notice are your facial expressions when you are listening to others or not speaking for any period of time. I can tell your wheels are are always spinning and you are very alert and focused on "what's next?" whenever you're being filmed. I just really like how seriously you take your business and your life and I feel like that is something lacking in a lot of people who are trying to be the next big thing or really successful to any degree. You TRULY listen and absorb you environment. Just anther thing that shows you are REALLY no bull shit. P.S. It would be really cool if you could do a video that is ZERO talking and all listening where you use a whiteboard or something for simple YEAS and NO answers. People HAVE TO understand this key to success.

My view Jason, is that whatever replaces 1/2 the jobs we have today will likely be service related that support the new(est) economy. You no longer need to be a code expert to create a website. The tech experts will continue to be needed, but so too will be the financial experts, caregivers, entrepreneurs who build innovative long-care residences as communities (since people will live longer, but still need assistance) and so on. If you can't drive a truck, you might transition to high speed transit. I think there will be more work in privacy protection and product innovations to eliminate everyday frustrations. One thing is for certain, there will always be a need for a complementary skills in businesses, and for every person to triple down on their strengths and EQ.

Great question. Will think and reply. If half of the population were unemployed, then I would imagine that would significantly impact the economy in terms of something like spending (unless AI starts shopping/spending, to help sustain the economy). Will get back to this over weekend.

Wow, what a great episode. So much content here. QOTD: There are two books that I think really address this questions: "Disrupt You" and "Bold". They take a positive spin. I have begun the habit of taking 15 minutes every morning to brain dump ideas. Just fill up a page with ideas that come to mind. Seeking patterns and threads. Gary is right. Shit is going to get real - perhaps we are going to look at the disruptive power of Air BNB and Uber as childs play. Exciting time to be alive.

I believe that the main areas that people can find work i 1. Wellness and HealthCare As there is more and more pressure on our health care services governments will become more strained to look after their people and individuals will look for alternatives methods for health. I believe that fields like (chiropractors, physiotherapists, naturopaths, osteotherapists) will see an increase and for people who are unskilled they can start to teach themselves general fitness and health as because when someone is healthy it is attractive to people and you can become a walking advertisement for people to ask you to consult them on how to improve their health. 2. Data Analysis As data becomes BIGGER AND BIGGER the more than people can understand and interpret data to help businesses grow the more valuable they will become. Although we know there are computer systems that can do the quantitative data in large amounts, the qualitative side of data is still best done by humans as we use computers to support that work. People are fundamentally relationship and that I believe is best analysed by people. 3. Transportation As the population of the world is still increasing better and quicker ways of travel will become more priority. This is why apps like Uber and Lyft have done so well but going forward I believe we actually need new forms of travel. This can also open up engineering jobs for people in the future. 4. Consulting (especially soft skills) I can see that the consulting industry will increase as the skills gap widens. More and more people will need advice on how to improves dated services and applications. The more people can specialise in their industry and predict future trends then the more they will be in need to give advice to companies. Soft skills are always areas where people need help. Especially training in improving social skills. Hope this helps. What do you all think will be the jobs for the future marketplace and whats the solution to fix the problems we are having? Thanks Gary for brining in great people.

Okay here's something to think about... People work because they need money for food (at the most basic level)... Currently we need to give money (which we have to work to earn) to the people who make the bread in order to eat. But if automation and A.I took over that job market (and was also smart enough to self-maintain the production), then everyone could have free bread and wouldn't need to work anyway. The only running cost to the factory would be electricity which we can get for free from solar/wind etc. Especially in a world where 3D printing custom peices for repairs is a real thing. Where would we get the raw materials to 3D print? Recycling old materials.

Deep QOTD! I believe it begins with investing in tech programs at the local level as do most things! To churn out a highly skilled workforce for the robotic/AI revolution, you need to invest in local socio-educational infrastructures and provide necessary funding for students/participants. In my spare time as an entrepreneur, I am teaching myself to code. I can say without any hesitancy if there was a local program where I could trade work hours/skills for robotics training, VR training or further coding, I would sign up today! :)

@hibajabet2439

Find your purpose in life, purpose will always trump hobby's and personal ambitions. Purpose being define as the reason you exist, a mission to complete. An impact that belongs to this generation, something worth dying for. If you can stop what ever it is you're doing and still be happy. Than you haven't found what you were born to do yet. Without purpose in life, everything else will never replace the underlining feeling of unfulfilled living. Another key hint is 'What ever makes you angry in life you were 'most likely' born to solve." Now this thing doesn't make other people angry, it only makes you angry. For example, it makes me angry to see films, tv shows, video-games plastered with negative influences rather than helping people. No one else gets mad at this, everyone can watch a movie and enjoy it. I watch the same movie and clearly see how this can negatively influence the masses and it makes me angry. So naturally, one of my life purposes is to create stories in different mediums to "positively" impact the viewer. etc

To answer the question asked at the end, I think more people will become content creators (like the musical.ly guy from NY at the beginning) and they'll earn money through ads and sponsorships. But the crucial thing here is that I also think that they'll be consumers at the same time. In an ideal world people would focus on problems that need solving and work on those if we had all this free time because robots would do all the 'boring' stuff, but we'll see... Anyways, another great episode!

@JasonCalcanis There's actually a great TEDEx about that. They say that in that world, people would be free to be as artistic as they want to be and fully utilize their time be it in art, science or business. They also make mention of the changed value in time. I think most people will rely on art as the art has it's own creative merit and that's where people will focus, then on monetizing it through entrepreneurial skill.
