I worked in the ED for about 20 years and have only seen gas gangrene once. We did an I&D of an abscess located on the pts left forearm. Dr made the incision, there was a brief hissing sound, followed by copious amounts of purulent drainage, and finally medium size gas bubbles started forming in the purulent drainage. In addition to staff complaining about the smell, pts in the waiting room were complaining about the oder. Great video, I’ve always wondered about the pathophysiology of that wound and now I know.

Oh yeah. Once you've smelled it, you'll never forget that stench. I'm a nurse and have treated a few patients with gangrene and both this and dry gangrene has very strong distinct odours that will stay with you. We ended up rubbing that vicks vapour rub under our noses (but you could still smell it)

Hi medicosis, big fan here. Just to let you know that your pronounciation of Virchow at 5:40 is somewhat inaccurate because the German "w" is more of a "v" pronounciation in English, and I couldn't quite hear the "v" on the end which took me out of my zone. I hope you can improve on this in the future :)

Hyperbaric oxygen is a controversial choice of treatment, might not always work. Best is iv antibiotics and antiserum injection and wound debridement
