@@morrisl7 I appreciate the information. I may pick up some with modified catalyst, to hand out as gifts, and perhaps one or two for myself. I had recently picked up 4 Jon E and two Jon E GI warmers with upgraded catalysts. I’m very happy with those. Best wishes…

@@georgesilverhawkstrailcame2297 the old jon e with upgraded catalyst are solid. mparam channel has a lot of info on the handwarmers, but in a nutshell, thicker metal creates a more stable handwarmer, as it maintains thermal mass to keep it going. the thin zippos are trash because if they get cold even temporarily, the metal is so thin they go out. Theres only one guy selling platinum catalyst online, originally intended as fireplace embers. mparam got his hands on platinum glass fiber pad which may not crumble as easily, but he charges a lot like $40 for a little sheet.

you said the more catalyst the hotter it gets. does that mean if i have more than 1 layer of mesh on the bottom or top it gets hotter or putting more of the fluffy stuff in?

The mesh is just there to hold the catalyst (fluffy stuff) in. The fluffy stuff is what makes the heat, more fluffy stuff, more heat. Don't pack it too tight though, the fuel vapor still needs to freely flow through the catalyst. I did run a couple of these for a while without any mesh and it works fine but it's really easy to knock the catalyst out of the burner, the mesh just holds it all together better.

thanks for the reply , i bought some rock wool for my zippo hand warmer , it won't work , it only worked with platinum ember , so that is why the rock wool price is much cheaper
