GAS is REAL!! Buying Gear is EASY | Storytelling is HARD...

Buying new gear is exciting and can be fun. Until it isn't. In this video I share my experience with GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) over the past few years. Hopefully my story will resonate with at least a few folks out there and let them know they are not alone.

Ha, I totally hear you! I recently made it my personal goal to be a minimalist creator (super hard when you're into tech stuff)! I said to myself that I'd only use the same camera & mic for xx amount of videos. Thankfully, I started this BEFORE I saw your last video otherwise I would've immediately run out to my Best Buy to pick up a camcorder I don't need! Lol! Looking forward to new content from you!

It's torrrrrture, right?!! 😆 But gotta do what you gotta do I guess. I honestly have enough stuff already to keep me busy for at least the next year. I can do deep dives / comparisons into the lenses, cameras, mics, recorders, etc. I don't think Hunt's will be too happy about my decision, but they'll still sell a bazillion cameras without me. As for the camcorder, I absolutely LOVE it!! I have so much footage from an old miniDV camcorder that I plan to compare to the new one. I was vlogging 22 years ago when it wasn't even a thing yet. I'm always ahead of the curve...🤣🤣

I feel this. I'm experiencing what seem like repeated existential crises around gear, making videos about gear, and accepting gear from companies to make content about. Really thinking about a different approach

I hear ya! I plan to make a bunch of comparison videos for all the redundant gear that I have. I can't think of a good reason to hold on to all 4 standard zoom lenses that I have. I'll test them all side by side, share the results on YT, and sell the 3 that don't spark joy. Rinse and repeat with audio recorders, microphones, tripods, etc. The hardest part will be to NOT buy NEW GEAR!! 🤣

This is undoubtedly true, but sometimes specific issues can be a bit off putting to create something, I know it's usually a bad excuse but say on the Fuji, on the X-T3 I was constantly out of focus and without IBIS it was a pain to film freehand and gimbals are just so heavy and cumbersome when travelling. But then on the X-S10 it was IBIS wobble in the corners and no 4K60 so the footage looked a bit boring, now with the X-S20 it's so much better but still IBIS wobble and now I think I'm still within the return period, maybe the Sony A6700 is better - all of this instead of creating anything. I have a problem 😂

There are definitely times where it makes sense to upgrade your gear and it sounds like you are currently in one of those situations. I made the switch from Fuji to Sony about 18 months ago and am kicking myself for not doing it sooner. (I'd encourage you to check out my YT video I did on that topic) For hybrid use, there is nothing better than Sony right now. I did miss the manual experience that Fuji offers so I picked up a used Leica Q2 for every day carry and it's been amazing. Good luck with your decisions!

@@RandumbTech I've been reading up and I don't have Sony yet but already kicking myself! - So many little things I'm learning now and going oh wow that's a lot better. On Fuji, you open the app and it turns off HDMI, USB and the internal LCD on the camera, making it unusable, you can't even change focus! - on Sony, wirelessly stream to your phone as a second monitor while streaming over USB - I won't need that 5" monitor I. bought :) For a simple travel vlog video, the built in mic is directional with 3 capsules and a little dead cat on Sony. On Fuji, horrible mic, no dead cat and it picks up focusing noises from even the most silent lenses. Dynamic stabe on some of the Sony cameras like the ZV-E1 that I ordered. No need for a heavy gimbal in most situations. Video focus is not in the same universe, it auto changes aperture to get everyone in focus (wow!), you can tell it which specific face to always keep in focus by importing that face, you have a focus map on screen to show what is and isn't in focus, I mean woah! A bunch of other super amazing features like the AI stuff, the clear zoom turning your prime into a mini zoom, the ai framing, etc - Fuji feels positively back in the dark ages. For photos I'm keeping the X-S10 I think for similar reasons you got your Leica, but for video? - it's not even close!
