Bolts with replaced batteries get the newer pack that gets 260 miles of range. 65 kWh instead of 60 kwh

I thought about a bolt when my volt got totaled recently. I decided to go with a 2020 Hyundai Ioniq Electric because I didn't want to give up adaptive cruise control.

Last April I bought a 2014 BMW i3 REX. In 6500 miles I've used 3.7 gallons of gas. Great commuter car. I get 50 to 75 miles a charge in MN. I've never had range anxiety and the car is a blast to drive.

My 2017 Bolt finally got it’s new battery a few months ago, and not only is the range improved, its temperature management in cold weather is better too. Looking forward to many more years with my Bolt!

I love my Clarity PHEV. 47 miles of range. Plug in every night. I’ve spent 8.00 on gas in the last 120 days. It’s a big comfortable electric car with a beautiful interior. I bought my 2018 used with 29k on the odo for 22,000. I couldn’t be happier with my purchase. I got a luxury electric car for the price of a used civic. And for long trips I have a gas engine for backup, although I’ve yet to take a long trip but I will this summer. Yes the styling isn’t my favorite part of the car. Forward of the b pillar it’s great. Aft of the b pillar they could have done better. But the car is so comfortable to drive it more than makes up for funky styling.

No mention of the Spark EV? You guys even had one a while. I'm still thinking about getting one for a grocery getter. But they have gone up and it's hard to find one with 20k miles lik you could just a year or two ago.

I have bought a 2016 Spark EV, with around 30 K Miles on it. Unfortunately, I can not fast-charge it here in Europe. Plug do not fit our connectors.

I own a 2018 Chevy VOLT premier. I bought it used and I was able to get it up from 53EV miles to 58EV miles. It allowed me to get around town and get home with a couple of miles left. I had a small front-end accident and it's currently in the body shop waiting for parts, however, I just received a call saying they found the needed parts, and the car is projected to be ready by sometime next week. My insurance company paid for a rental car for 30 days, then enterprise was nice enough to allow me to continue renting it at the insurance rate of $30 a day. Good thing I was good at math….. That’s over $900 a month so I elected to turn it in. Love your show.

I have a 2017 Bolt EV with the new battery, even though the EPA rating is 259 miles with the larger battery these are getting, I am getting over 280 miles of range. I think you are under rating the Bolt EV by quite a bit. The fire situation was blown way out of proportion, there were less than 20 fires out of over 144,000 Bolts since 2017. Most of those fires were in 2019 models. I paid $17,500 for mine last November with 20,000 miles on it. I have driven it 7,800 miles since then and have had zero problems.

My 2015 Leaf ain't what she used to be, but still has 10/12 battery health bars and gets 72mi of range. Been perfect for commuting and trips to Lowe's. Even though I have another car now I can't part with my Leaf for some reason and it still does the majority of my commutes.

Same. My wife and I (and now our 19yo son) compete over who gets to drive our 2015 leaf w/72 miles peak range. It's got comfort features like heated seats and heated steering wheel, satellite radio, etc. that our other vehicle ('05 Toyota Sienna) doesn't have.

Go get it retrofitted ASAP. Keep your battery and it's 6k for the larger battery pack. Definitely worth it

Disagreed about the Soul! I love mine and it's lots of fun. 2015-2017 have a 93 mile range, and 2018-2019 have 111. Granted, it's slow. However, they share the same weakness as the Leaf: air cooling, so you're bound to suffer from degradation. Non U.S. viewers likely got the 2020+ model which share a drivetrain with the Niro and Kona and are properly water-cooled with much better range.

Agreed about the Soul EV. I love my 2016. It does have one advantage over the Leaf in that it has active fans for cooling, while the early Leafs didn't.

Love this! I was in the market for and bought a cheap used EV a few years back.. I gotta say I loved my caribbean blue Soul EV! believe me I love pep and sportiness and it lacked that but its actually rated at 93 mi range, strong dc fast charging loads of nice features, and could even fit my bike in the back. Drove all over Maryland, no problem back in 2018.. I imagine it’d be even easier with more chargers today. I’d add that the Chevy Spark EV was my second choice.. way more peppy/fun, but smaller and much lower quality

I am loving my 2012 Toyota/Tesla Rav4 EV that I got a few months ago for about 15k. Charging to 80% gives me 118 miles and the guess o meter is much more accurate than the Leaf or Focus Electric I had in the past.

We have a 2016 500e that we bought with 12k miles for under $9k. Looks and drives like a new car. It’s a perfect commuter for work. Cost nothing to charge . We also have a 2021 mini se and love it. The mini is very efficient and after doing a couple of 200 mile plus trips we are about to take a summer road trip 1200 mile round trip. Map out the chargers, have level 2 backups just in case and get the Tesla destination adapter. Great cars and no gas. Great video as always.

I had a '15 Leaf SL and loved it. Had it for a year in hot Las Vegas and my battery never dropped capacity in the 2 years I had it. Mine also had the DC fast charger in addition to the Chademo charger. BTW, the rated range on it was 90 miles, not 60. I regularly got about 100.

The Honda Clarity PHEV was a brilliant car. I owned one for 3.5 years, drove it daily to work and it would go months without needing any gas. Sure the styling was a bit odd, but for economic use, it was ideal.

You forgot to mention about the Spark EV. That car has a typical 80 mile range, but what makes them very fun is the 327-400 lb-ft of torque. It's a little sleeper!

The Chevy Volt is a better PHEV then the BMW I3 IMO. Much better in snow because it's FWD and at highway cruising as it's almost immune to wind gusts. The Bolt-EV is really good in snow and I get 200 miles on road trips at 0 degrees F in Alaska. I don't remember you guys ever really reviewing the Bolt, not that I need you to because I own both.

We have a 2021 BMW i3 120ah (42kWh usable battery). It’s a fantastic car and it always feels special. In 10k miles we’ve average 4.3 m/kWh so about 180 miles of range. The best we’ve had from a charge is 4.7m/kWh which would give almost 200 miles. By comparison our Q4 E-Tron has managed a best of 3.9 m/kWh which gives almost 300 miles👍🏻

We have a 2017 i3, BEV only with 33kwh and from what I remember we see between 4.4 to 4.8. I think it’s slightly lighter than the 44kwh pack so maybe there’s a trade off for the higher capacity battery. I also programmed the car to always drive in eco mode.

The i-MiEV really continues to be the Rodney Dangerfield of electric cars. No respect, especially from the fossil-fueled automotive journalism industrial complex of the day. I bought mine used - and cheaply - almost 7 years ago and, yes, I'm one of those folks you mention who is passionate about it and willing to go to bat for it. The i-MiEV really is a misunderstood yet flawed masterpiece. It harkens back to the classic VW Beetle I was driving over 4 decades ago in all the best ways. Worth noting that I was able to test the i-MiEV against the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt for two week intervals about a decade ago, knowing that I would be buying one of those three cars used a couple of years later. As an Arizona resident, California used car lots that I could access on the internet were going to be my EV oyster. But there were also a lot of true compliance EVs in the Golden State that weren't going to have transferable out-of-state warranties. As late as 2015 - when I finally committed to a used i-MiEV - it was still unclear, for instance, if the Chevy Spark EV and the Fiat 500e could even be serviced here by a local dealership. We eventually found out that they could. Good news. But we already knew by then that the Honda Fit EV - to name one - was going to be part of a large fleet of California-only EVs that could never be serviced or reliably owned here. The only other all-electric option readily available back then outside of the ZEV states was the Leaf. The i-MiEV largely won for me because of it's cavernous interior for such a small car and it's no-frills simplicity: very few extraneous dashboard gadgets (the sort of thing you know will fail over the years.) The i-MiEV is small, but you sit up high. You don't feel especially vulnerable navigating through a sea of SUVs and monster trucks. Only the Tesla Model X has a larger windshield and the i-MiEV's sloping-front, bean-shaped exterior makes for fabulous visibility. Like our gasoline Honda FIT, the rear seats fold down completely flat and you've then got what amounts to a micro van (and, yes, I know vans are also something automotive fashionistas insist we not supposed to like anymore, but I digress.) The i-MiEV has a tiny footprint, but - just like purpose-built EVs we're only now seeing coming out of China, etc - the wheels are pushed to the far corners of the undercarriage, Once you get rid of the ICE and all the extraneous baggage that goes with it (the original Kei car version had a 3 cylinder ICE in the rear, which I'm sure was miserable,) a talented interior designer can really take advantage of that situation. When the traction battery failed in mine in it's 8th year, I was able to get a free warranty replacement installed by the local Mitsubishi dealer without any hassles. Of course a slightly larger battery would have been a nice upgrade on the i-MiEV and, yes, fashioned out of something chemically more robust than LMO, like LFP. But nothing along those lines will ever be forthcoming from the parent company. So, I may find myself scoping out another used i-MiEV someday soon as a spare parts car. The idea of dropping the pack in one of them and retrofitting it with better cells is something that's crossed my mind more than once. But I'm, again, curious to see what the Chinese will come up with regarding their new EVs . . . and, more importantly, what we'll be able to get from them here in the US over the next few years. The BYD Dolphin (also variously known as the AE1 and Atto 2) is the closest thing I've seen so far that I can envision being a possible "i-MiEV killer."

Ive been daily driving a 500e for over 2 years now. I rely on public and at work charging. Aside from the charging speed (no level 3) and the range I love my car. I will be trading it in soon for either a Model 3, a Bolt, or a Prius Prime.

Same here with 90% EV on a 2018 CT6 2.0E plug-in with 43-45 miles of range. I see about 2,000 miles on a tank of gas and over 100 mpg.

It’s the perfect car to bring back right now especially when they used to sell for $30k back in the day. The Volt can do about 50 miles on electric charge which is amazing and if you need more range, there’s the engine too. I know they dropped the Bolt price, but this would undercut it.

I own a Kia Soul EV+. It is a great cheap EV (13,500) with level 3 charge, full charge in 30 minutes or less. Also the range isn't effected much by weather. It looses 5 miles of range in either dead of summer or the dead of winter. I live in Georgia

My Focus Electric was left off. Surely it's better than the 500e, which doesn't support DCFC, and the Smart EV, which is only suitable as a 3rd car.

Fiat, smart and BMW are no-go for me, because of family of 5. Found that 2. gen Leaf was for me. Pretty rich on all the do-da's. Chademo for possible V2H option. Plenty of space and range. For cons: onboard AC charger is 1 phase (so I have to limit my charging power at home to 16A, although I never needed it to charge faster..but still). Road noise on highway speeds could be better (second car is a Land Rover, so I'm used to a quiet ride). No electric seats with memory, even with the highest spec.

I loved my Nissan Leaf 2018 and had 2015 before! This 2018 I purchased used with 20k mikes only for 15k. I don’t see my car dropping battery so far.

The i3 is still being sold in Europe and in Asia. There is a redesign model slated for the Chinese market for 2023, it is a coupe that looks similar to the i4.

On the BMW i3 (which I agree is a great used buy), I couldn't hear well but think you said the REX is best. I'm not so sure. It adds weight and complexity, and I've read that any reliability issues have been associated with the REX. What do others think?

It also blows everything on this list away. The original Ioniq would have been a good one to add to this list though as it's "cheap" and really really good. Lots of space, reasonable range, super comfortable etc etc. It's also more efficient then pretty much any other EV on the road

It’s a crazy time right now. Gas is cheaper than electricity at $4.59 a gallon. Electricity starts at $0.427 a kWh. Unless you’re getting 5 mi/kWh, a Prius is the better buy…

Just looked on Auto Trader, cheapest Bolt is 400 miles away, is a 2017, and selling $27,498 which is more than my 2014 Jeep Rubicon is worth.

Another one to avoid is the Ford Focus EV. While you can find them competitively priced with the other used EV's, there is zero aftermarket for their battery packs, as all the tech has been discontinued, so it has the same issue of cost overrun of the battery replacement that the early first gen Nissan Leafs have.

Our 2017 i3 Rex is the best car we’ve owned. 200km range with the ability to use the range extender to do longer trips; in theory up to 1000km without having to charge.

Where do you see the prices of the i3 Rex going? Complicated question I think. Most ev’s depreciate quickly but they were loved and now discontinued. Will the replacement prove to be so much better, prices drop quicker? Not to mention all the supply chain issues and not being able to find used cars in general. My only hope in getting a good one cheep and relatively soon is if the replacement is miles better as well as all the new competitors coming on now. I think really what I want to know is how long before I can get a latest gen low mileage Rex for less than 20k??

The i3 was not discontinued, it's still being sold in Europe/Asia.. And there is a redesign version for China coming in 2023, it's a coupe without the beaver tooth front grill

The latest generation i3 for the USA market used is a 2019 with the 120 hour amp battery. You can find these for around $33k 2017 with the 94ah battery for about $25k and 2016-2015-2014 with the 60ah for $20k down to $17k. The 2020-2021 models are still very expensive.

I'd say within the next 8 months or sooner the prices for a used 2019 with the 120ah battery should get down to around $27k depending on mileage and options it has

Just bought a 2020 ioniq electric. I'm happy. Getting 5 miles/kwh with mixed driving. Approximately 200 miles for a car rated for 170. Charging speed could be faster though.

@@justinfowler2857 yeah I have the 28 KW battery but it has the lithium polymer cells so they will hold up better than any other electric car enjoy your vehicle on average 5 kilowatts per mile as well my car is a 2017

The tesla 3 is over 40,000 before taxes. Unless by "afford" you mean 40-50,000 dollars in debt, it is not affordable for the average household.

Unfortunately, they are basing this off of the market which has been hammered by demand and inflation. This isn't their fault, they have to look at it realistically. In 2019, a used EV that was worth 6-7000 is now going for 13000, even though its now older, will have less range and less advanced options and tech. Of all of these, the Bolt is probably the best deal, as it has the best range and is actually cheaper than the compliance cars as they are still being produced, which is causing the older models to depreciate in value faster.

The e-golf is no. 1 for me, drives well, Hyundai ioniq is a close no. 2. I own the ioniq 2017-2019. I’ve road tripped it from Los Angeles to Vancouver BC. The Nissan Leaf is more fun to drive, a 2015+ would be a good second car. Owning an ioniq for the past 3 years has allowed us to save up for a model 3. The bmw i3 is a mistake… don’t go this route

FCEVs are not a traditional EV. And since 99.98% of hydrogen is made by methane reformation, they pollute. Much more efficient to take that CA solar and charge a battery.

Hydrogen is generally produced from natural gas but can be made by electrolysis of water. Electrolyzers can be powered by solar/wind etc, but there are efficiency losses. The efficiency direct to a li ion battery is higher. The range issue was the potential hydrogen advantage but that is slowly going away for the EV market. I’ll take pugging in an electric socket over a high pressure flammable gas.

Gas prices are coming down. Yesterday I paid $4.15 per gallon. Tesla chargers are equal to $6 per gallon. Nobody in their rights mind pays for solar.

2017, 2018 smart car is definitely BETTER than the first generation. Faster charging and the EPA range is not very accurate. I have a 2018 and can get 90 miles per charge or better when I try. Perfect back and forth to work and around town car. Costs nearly nothing to run.

The reason for the lower range is because the testing method changed by the time the last generation was released. I’ve had a 2016 and a 2018 and the newer model gets about 10% more range, and engaging the ECO button gets an additional 10% via more aggressive regen. Also a revised suspension makes for a much better ride on rough surfaces and a tighter turning circle. TFL really screwed the pooch on this review.

I love EVs but I wouldn’t spent a penny on the current expensive garbage we see driving around. Every last one of them,yes including all Teslas are at least 25% too expensive than they should be.and they were expensive well before the current scam-a-thon going on everywhere.

13:03 given what a flop that car was, I'm surprised it's not higher on the list. I still think the idea of a clarity platform could work (a single platform designed for both hydrogen and BEV), but this clearly needs a through examination before redoing it. two biggest issues need to be addressed, looks (easy enough) and the value ($40k and 89 miles of range, really?). they should also go over what Toyota did with the Mirai with a fine tooth comb.

15:42 and if you don't count stuff like the Kandy, it's still (to this day) the lowest MSRP of any EV on sale. before credits it was $20k after credits it was $13k. after credits it actually was the cheapest car you could get at the time. I'll spare you the analysis as to why, but "the cheapest MSRP for an EV" crown is probably pretty safe for the long term future.

19:25 this is a complicated question(this could probably be it's own podcast), but I'll give the simple answer. for KWh to KWh at the "pump" it's about $13-18 dollars for similar amount of fuel (33 KWh). at least when I last ran the math, for an unrelated thing. but that doesn't mean hydrogen is the worse deal. because fuel cells and electric motors are both much more efficient than gas (about 50-80% verse around 20%), but finding a comparable cost per mile is..... headache inducing.

Basic problem with the premise. There are NO CHEAP EVs now. Every compliance car is selling at about 3 times 2020 prices. Medium range EVs are selling near original MSRPs, or at or higher if they’re low mileage cars. Tight market plus fuel prices = instantly upside down in a compliance car. HORRIBLE values.

Stop exaggerating.. none of these EVs are 3 times the 2020 price... A 2014 BMW i3 was averaging $14k in 2020 and the car is about $2k to $3k more in 2022.. Fiat 500e was $9000k in 2020 and it's $11k now.

It's a BMW, so it does handle very well.. The interior is also nice.. the i3 that is one solid color and has the 20 inch wheels looks way better than the two tone color ones with the ugly wheels.

Totally disagree - I had base i3 - the worst car I owned. Hardly keeps the charge in Massachusetts. With rear wheel driver - completely undriveable. It would skid and I had to leave the car and come back after the snow was over. Extremely poor car. Hated it. I owned the car for 2 years and you have no idea what you are talking about.

Well, that's your opinion and your experience.. you should have done your research before buying. All EVs lose range in the winter and why would anyone drive a rear wheel drive BMW in the snow? Did you bother to put winter/snow tires on the i3? Did your i3 have a heat pump? Did u ever condition the car while it was plugged in to heat it up during the winter before driving off?

@@mamadouaziza2536 When you buy a 50k car, you expect it work. In contrast, I have a rear wheel Tesla Model 3 and that easily ranks as my best car I have ever owned. You see the point.. almost same price. These are basic parameters - that it should be driveable any time of the year. Also this i3 during winters would hold only 50 miles. not 109 as advertised. Those narrow wheels were so poor in turns and would skid all the time.

@@rkaveti U are supposed to use winter/snow tires. Also the later i3' had bigger batteries that got at least 150 miles in the winter. Also the non REx models included a heat pump for better efficiency.. If the i3 is not for you, well don't buy it... The car works perfectly in cities that don't experience cold weather and snow.

All of these are horrible in one way or another mostly as crossovers being the #1 crime, but so many ugly sticks were used in making these EVs. I sure hope the next-gen EVs are better. Give us a show on the '23 & '24 coming to EVs. The only EV I've seen that I classify as beautiful so far is the i4, but I think it costs too much and I want it closer to my Altima in scope. Do yall think GM/Chevy's Ultium will bring back the sanity to the market?

Do u worry about range anxiety when your gas car gets down to 2% full tank? If so, you just go to a gas station and fill up.. If an EVs gets down to 2% battery charge, you take it to a level 3 charger and charge the car.

@@atmartens What is your city? There should be chargers at Walmart, Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods, Target, Shopping Malls, many newer apartment complexes have chargers for the public to use. Of course there is EVgo, Charge Point, EA and many others. Some gas stations also have chargers.. You can also use a Tesla adapter on most EVs so you can use Tesla's Level 2 chargers.. No more excuses...

@@mamadouaziza2536 No, there not excuses. There's no infrastructure. Walmart and Target both do not have chargers. There are 5, and 4 are at parking garages and one is at a car dealership. My apartment complex was built in 2018, and it does not have chargers. Gas and hybrid are here to stay for at least ten years.

Your lack of passion and enthusiasm for any of these EV's in this video illustrates how dull these are. This list might as well be read off by Ben Stein. EV's are a long way from becoming mainstream. People in apartment buildings, homes not at street level, multi-family homes... how are they supposed to charge their cars overnight or at all while home? People with large families... are they supposed to travel in multiple vehicles? How many cars can I charge at once? People that live in places with snow... where are the AWD EV's? What if you forget to plug in your car? What if a storm knocks out power to your house? How will you get to work or get food or do anything? I can gas and go from an empty tank to full in 5 minutes. I can walk and get 5 gallons of gas if need be. The future may be electric... way, way, way in the future. I'm gonna keep my gas powered cars, EV's aren't ready for my needs.

Great topic. Fiat 500E doesn't have DC fast charging & the back seat has a raised floor, fits children, off the line acceleration if you can get any traction. When prices get back to normal first gen 80 mile EVS should start dropping in price as more long ranges become available used.
