In this HVAC Training Video, I Show How Gas Valves Have Changed Over Time in Gas Furnaces. I Show How Each Gas Valve Differs Based on the Heater it is Installed In! Some Versions Include Standing Pilot, Intermittent Pilot, Direct Ignition, and More! Supervision is needed by a licensed HVACR Tech while performing tasks as Experience and Apprenticeship garners Wisdom and Safety.

Got fooled today on a stepper gas valve. Thought the valve was bad as it was lighting pilot and not opening main valve right away, and when it did it was a weak flame. Threw my manometer on expecting the valve to be bad yet it gradually staged up until it hit 3.5”wc. Learn something every day.

Thanks for the video, very informative. I did notice there was no mention of the negative gas valves you will find on many Trane furnaces which is a totally different animal. Thanks again.

It would be great a training video on power burners, those gas valves are completely different beast, they are pretty common on combi boilers. Thanks Craig

What do you guys think about this: Got a short to ground using my continuity tester on my meter... from the red 24 volt wire going right up to the defrost board on a 12 yr old AMANA Central Heat Pump outdoor unit. I isolated the system R coming from the indoor air handler where I first found the short on the R. When I checked that Isolated indoor R there was no short. So, I followed the short to the outdoor unit. I got right up to the R connection on the Defrost Board. I pulled the wire off the board to keep going with further testing downstream to isolate the short. So then I checked for continuity between the R on the board and ground, and wow...no continuity! I checked my way back on the red circuitry going backwards again, and no more short there, even with the red wire connected back to the Defrost board. Anyway, my guess is that when I pulled the R wire connector off of the Defrost board, the board flexed a bit, and eliminated the short. I have had boards do that a couple times in the past. So that slight flex of the board is my one guess, or could it have been some build up of spider eggs and webbing that was evident on the board causing a short and moving wires around to look actually stopped that problem by moving the spider webs and eggs? Ever seen that?

Are the burners different in a furnace with a 2 stage valve compared to a single stage valve? Why is it ok to run lower gas pressure through the burners on a 2 stage but it could cause problems with the single stage?

Burners are not different. On 2 stage furnaces. Their is a 2 speed inducer motor. Inducer job is to not only create a draft in the heat exchanger, it's also regulating the amount of oxygen it's taking in.
