Unbelievable $1000 Half Dollar Hunt - Silver, Proofs and an Error that could be worth $300 or more!

Today we hunt 2 Brinks boxes of halves from my local 5/3rd bank. All I can say is this is probably the best pair of boxes I have hunted in the last 3-4 months. We found EVERYTHING and an ERROR, if grade proves true could be worth upwards of $300. Enjoy!

FYI: You are correct. 2024 red book confirms S mint marked proof coins after 1970 did not contain silver until 1992 with the exception of 1976 which includes 3 different S MM coins. Clad proof, 40% silver business strike and a 40% silver proof.

The first 1979 S proof half dollar you found is definitely a type 2 aka clear S variety.

Its been a good week for Georgia. Was going to pick up some parts out of my normal area today and stopped by the branches there. Got the 9 loomis rolls of half dollars they had. I pulled 2 40%, 17 proofs, and 105 NIFCs out of those rolls. I also picked up 2 customer wrapped rolls of Ikes at the same time.

@GASilverHunter I saw a proof ender so unwrapped that roll in the parking lot there was one more proof and the entire rest of the roll was NIFCs. Needless to say I couldn't wait to get home and go through the rest.

Ive had a few 40% kick out when feeding the coin machine. I missed them cause they had that copper layer on the edges looking like clad. But the coins machines Just dont like to except silver to my advantage.

The old coin machine I used to use at 5/3rd (when they still had them) accepted silver coins and I dumped like 10 40%ers into it. Bank wouldn't let me buy the bag to get them out... I was disappointed.

The 1968-D (as well as 1965-1970) are silver-clad!

Also referred to as 40% silver. The other 60% is a clad layer but typically not copper looking. I called these years out as 40% silver about a minute into the video.

You are correct. We also refer to this range of coins as 40%ers, but often just say "silvers" for short as they do have silver in them. 90% silver, 1964 and earlier, are technically also Silver-Clad, with the only difference being the amount of silver used to make the coin. To maybe frame this differently, Gold Eagles are made of 91.67% gold and then mixed with silver and copper to harden them... but people just call them Gold Eagles or even Eagles in some circumstances for short. "Gold, Silver copper amalgamation Eagle" just doesn't roll off the tongue. 😜

I order full boxes from the bank and boxes like this come along a few times a year. The boxes are sealed when I get them so the bank doesn’t know what’s in them and neither do I.

After I saw the ender in the 2nd box I started weighing them and the first roll was heavy so I knew that was coming. The rest of the box went unweighed as I wanted to be surprised if there were more heavy rolls. I want to say that first roll was like 227.1 or something like that.

how far gone does the fg need to be to count as a no fg? i have one where it only reflects light a little deferent from the right angle, but not in the shape of an f or g no matter how you look at it edit: i just watched the video a little further and saw he got one, the one i have has a little bit more of the g from what i can tell but i dont think the g is complete

Yeah... the FG should be completely gone. Any raised metal or ability to see even the remote shape of a F or G will disqualify it. Great pictures of this can be found on pcgs.com in the price guide section.

How do you tell the difference between machine doubling and a DDR or DDO?Very nice hunt,first time seeing a proof Benji.

You go to explain in a comment… but I’ll try. If it looks stair stepped… it’s machine doubling or strike doubling. If you actually have two same height letters or parts of letters it’s double die. That’s a fairly poor explanation but the simplest I can do in words. There are great images online if you google it.
