Something similar also happened to me. Customer had loose coins in sandwich bags, stating they were already counted and the amount. I told him he'd be done faster at the coinstar across the street because I would have to manually count the coins. He decided on waiting and when he saw that I was really ready to count, he changed his mind.

There’s an easy solution to not getting scammed like this again: Before agreeing to buy the roll of supposed dimes, tell the customer that you only buy rolls after they’ve been cracked open, and if they aren’t dimes, the police will be called on them for attempted theft by deception. Scammers will naturally balk and go elsewhere.

@@gblargg That's unlikely, because you'd have to have a roll of dimes that are ALL silver, and if they were replaced with cents they'd all have to be post-1981 zinc-core cents (because those cents weigh 2.5 grams each: the same as silver dimes). If one or more of the dimes were clad rather than silver and if one of more of the cents was 95% copper, it would throw off the expected weight of the roll. The cashier would have to know the weight of a legitimate roll, based on all the above information. And, of course, the cents are larger in diameter than the dimes. One would have to be awfully unlucky AND stupid to be duped by this scam after weighing a roll of coins.

I once thought I dropped my last $50 in a dollar tree and I knew exactly how it would look asking an employee if someone turned in a $50 bill. I got the reaction I expected but luckily I found it in my car I think it was. Any place that sells things cheap is going to attract the scammers.

It's a common scam, just let them know that if the roll isn't see-through you gonna have to open and count. It usually stop the scammers and also sometimes discourage people to pay with rolls in itself. There's also the not filled rolls scam and the 5cents or 25cents rolls filled with metal round plates in the middle, always open them before. ;)

Old coin rollers can accept pennies in a dime roll. Grandma must’ve had an old coin roller laying around. Now that I think of it, those paper rolls seemed pretty old style.

Get on aliexpress, contact some manufacturers and get them custom made. One could also probably get away with quarter rolls marked as $20 even though they only contain $10.
