There’s an easy solution to not getting scammed like this again: Before agreeing to buy the roll of supposed dimes, tell the customer that you only buy rolls after they’ve been cracked open, and if they aren’t dimes, the police will be called on them for attempted theft by deception. Scammers will naturally balk and go elsewhere.

@@gblargg That's unlikely, because you'd have to have a roll of dimes that are ALL silver, and if they were replaced with cents they'd all have to be post-1981 zinc-core cents (because those cents weigh 2.5 grams each: the same as silver dimes). If one or more of the dimes were clad rather than silver and if one of more of the cents was 95% copper, it would throw off the expected weight of the roll. The cashier would have to know the weight of a legitimate roll, based on all the above information. And, of course, the cents are larger in diameter than the dimes. One would have to be awfully unlucky AND stupid to be duped by this scam after weighing a roll of coins.
