I had it done to me at McDonald’s when I was a manager. To open it you have to hit the dimes against the edge of the counter and it would crack open. I just laughed and he told me he “found it.” For the good laugh I gave him a fountain drink but kept the Pennie’s to show my workers as an example not to fall for this if it were to ever reoccur.

Something similar also happened to me. Customer had loose coins in sandwich bags, stating they were already counted and the amount. I told him he'd be done faster at the coinstar across the street because I would have to manually count the coins. @@gblargg That's unlikely, because you'd have to have a roll of dimes that are ALL silver, and if they were replaced with cents they'd all have to be post-1981 zinc-core cents (because those cents weigh 2.5 grams each: the same as silver dimes). If one or more of the dimes were clad rather than silver and if one of more of the cents was 95% copper, it would throw off the expected weight of the roll. The cashier would have to know the weight of a legitimate roll, based on all the above information. And, of course, the cents are larger in diameter than the dimes. One would have to be awfully unlucky AND stupid to be duped by this scam after weighing a roll of coins.

Also work at a gas station and we get rolls of coins too which is a pain. But we pretty much open them right then and there, checking if they are the right coins or if the wrong coins are in there or worst weights like washers to try and trick us. And this shows one of the reasons why we do that.

It's a common scam, just let them know that if the roll isn't see-through you gonna have to open and count. It usually stop the scammers and also sometimes discourage people to pay with rolls in itself. There's also the not filled rolls scam and the 5cents or 25cents rolls filled with metal round plates in the middle, always open them before. ;)
