You're gonna stain it black! That's crazy!! The saying "once you go black, you can't go back" refers directly wood staining.
@TakamiWoodshop3 жыл бұрын
what!?!? I thought that saying was a porn thing 😊. Yep gonna black it out bro, I like the look and .. besides, if not black it would be green by the end of winter, and black by the end of next anyway. I think actually, that using the tinted oil allows it to weather back quite evenly to somewhat where it would anyway, whereas stain (and paint) are coating media that either exists or it doesn't (when it flakes off) - giving it that "je ne sais shit" look that is all too common in my neighbourhood 😥. I wish I knew more.

I can't tell you how many combo countersink bits I've broken just like that! Spare bits are critical. I like that you managed to work with the existing posts, especially the hinge side of the gate. I look forward to the next installment. ;-)

Cheers Stephen! Too right about spare bits - extremely critical when you have a big job to do. Stars must have been aligned that day - not only did I have spare bits, but I knew where to find them.

Geeze, this job is taking forever and you still have to get to the paving 😊. Lot of work Rob, but it is coming along, thanks for sharing. Now we know why builders charge twice as much for renovation as they do for new builds.

Tell me about it Bob! I'm over it to tell the truth, exhausted from it. Things that have not helped are scope creep, a lack of materials availability (I'm having to make a 6 hr round trip next week to get some of the fence panels that I need), purchasing wrong/inappropriate materials and having trouble finding cost effective alternatives, making mistakes, not knowing how to tackle some problems, and having to do unexpected remedial work. Guess what - the paving is going to have to go on hold probably, day light saving just ended last night and once winter comes it's hard to get anything done with the rain and the short days (can't do any after work etc). SO a big eye roll there Bob, but - I'm a team of one and .... arggghh.

Cheers Graham, yeah that fencing is definitely at a higher price point that the regular run-of-the-mill pine palings (how's that! using the expression run-of-the-mill so close to its origins - though I think the "mill" in that case originally refers to fabric mills), but it's definitely a premium product - won't twist, warp etc - even more so with T& G. I've got more about it coming up in a vid soon (half finished editing). Yeah you ain't wrong about working with twisted wonky old shit posts!

Rob, the same stuff happened to me with similar countersink bits. The drill bit broke off. After the second time it broke, I binned it and went back to the previous way of using a dedicated countersink bit rather than a combo.

@@JohntheSchreiner I'm pretty busy with work as well but this project is giving me way more stress at the moment - you'd laugh at our winter, but it's coming, and, not much work gets done outside during it - so I have to get it done! I've have all the materials finally for another black fence, and the main screen. After that I have to get the whole area filled in with dirt to level it out - which is the main point of doing this whole project. Hell yeah, I think so too ! Shou sugi ban (actually more commonly called called yakisugi in Japan) is the shit isn't mate, I got some samples of that delivered to see what it was like - pretty pricey though as it's an architectural statement type of thing. I didn't have the balls to try and do it myself, you'd need some pretty fancy cedar (sugi) to begin with to pull that off, but I believe it lasts for dozens and dozens and dozens of years. Would love to build a cabin or something with it!

@@TakamiWoodshop You can actually use any kind of wood, Hardwood is for obvious reasons preferable. Why not use a metal or plastic spacer block against your house (protect from wood setting against your brick) and drill the slanted post back into the right direction instead of manipulate all the wood and posts around it? They make rubber, plastic and metal spacers for pergolas to protect the house exterior walls from bugs, etc. it just seems like a simpler fix that’s straiten out the rest of the leaning posts. I did enjoy everything minus that fix, glad you half lapped your supports in the gate, etc. beautiful work
@TakamiWoodshop3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, good suggestion! Believe me - it hurt me more to do that than it did you to watch it. I wanted to pull it straight off the house but the regulations here are such that you have to have a whole lot of knowledge and materials around water-tightness when attaching to the house, as well as be aware of the physics and forces etc, and doing it incorrectly can have implications with council, and insurance I guess (not to mention you might create leaks in your house). So I went with the ugly hack 😥, but hey!, thanks for the comment and welcome to my channel!
