Both games are awesome, love em to dead, even the Sega CD version of LoT. But for me Gate of Thunder is a much more rewarding experience. As you said, the music has more variation in styles, and love the precise and quick reflex gameplay. It feels like a Thunder Force 3.5. Great review.

If anyone wants to play these games they're both available on the Japanese PS3 Store for 8 to 9 dollars each.

I fucking love Lords of Thunder, but the Sega CD version is way better than PC Engine in my opinion. Also, the problem you mentioned with having almost no invincibility frames after getting hit is exclusive to the PC Engine version. In Sega CD, you get momentarily stunned instead but you have plenty of i-frames afterwards.

Ah that would make it more manageable! I've never played it but I can hear the drums were programmed better. Even on normal mode beating the PC Engine version takes a bit of work.

I respect your opinion, but for me Gate of Thunder is way more fun to play than Lords of Thunder. I have two major beefs with Lords: Constantly chasing down gems and incremental weapon power-ups is tedious, and the big items you really want are frequently appearing just before they scroll off the edge of the screen, so you have no chance of actually obtaining them. Secondly, I hate the way it powers you down when you get hit. You frequently obtain a power up and then lose it a few seconds later, which is frustrating and annoying. I also find the music to be a bit grating, not because of the compositions but rather the way it was recorded. It sounds kind of raspy and muted, like they recorded it from the next room over or something. It does absolutely have better graphics than Gate, though.

Game of thunder, wow, what an incredible cd soundtrack for its time.

Lords of Thunder OST is killer! Great comparison video. I never gave Gate of Thunder a try. My only local friend who had a PC-Engine Duo-R moved away, so I lost my ability to play this great system. Oh well, the price on these games is pretty rough anyway hehe.

I noticed the colors here dont look as garish as the RGB modded consoles and general emulator output- is this recorded via composite capture?
@UltraHealthyVideoGameNerd3 жыл бұрын
Composite all the way! Yes this was before had my PC Engine modded.

Aww yes two great shmups indeed. Its such a tough call as you detailed, but if forced to choose Lords of Thunder by a nose. Are you on discord?

I'm not on discord, this is a messaging service for online gaming right?

Now I must know, what is your beef with Sapphire? I love these two games as well, but don't think that one is terrible either.
@UltraHealthyVideoGameNerd5 жыл бұрын
I was definitely exaggerating! It doesn't suck, but I did find it to be highly disappointing, especially in comparison to the reputation. Now luckily I live in Japan and probably paid half of what most people have to. The enemy patterns just aren't well thought out, bosses are pure memorization and no skills, difficulty doesn't grow gradually, and 3 of the 4 characters are so slow it makes the game unplayable. Beautiful graphics and music, but no substance. As I've said in another video, they really should have let the team from the Soldier games develop it.

@@UltraHealthyVideoGameNerd Absolutely agreed with the lack of skill based, difficulty progression and trial and error in Sapphire. Lords of thunder does some trial and error BS segments too but I find Sapphire to be overpraised as hell and not even close as the best shooters on PCE/TGX library. Collectors created a unicorn out of thin air with the reputation of that game... Blazing Lasers is a little too much hyped up too but is actually a great game, tho not as good and challenging as the soldier games.
