Isn't it the axon terminal button (not dendrite) of the sensory neuron that synapses with the Second order neuron/interneuron dendrites or cell body? Would be good if you addressed endogenous opioid peptides released by the local leukocytes and also the descending serotonergic/adrenergic pathway stimulation of interneurons to decrease sensory neuron neurotransmitter release/hyperpolarize 2nd order neuron to make less responsive. I appreciate you might be trying to keep it more basic.
