@@anuragkhati4547 yes shear stress is zero on principal planes whereas the planes on which shear stresses acts are never free from normal stresses

A prismatic concrete column of mass density ρ supports its own weight, as shown in the figure. (Assume that the solid is subjected to a uniform gravitational body force of magnitude g per unit mass). Suppose that the concrete contains a large number of randomly oriented microcracks. A crack which lies at an angle θ to the horizontal will propagate if |Tt|+μTn>τ0 where μ is the friction coefficient between the faces of the crack and τ0 is a critical shear stress that is related to the size of the microcracks and the fracture toughness of the concrete, and is therefore a material property. By assuming that μ=0.7, using Mohr's circle, find the orientation of the microcrack that is most likely to propagate. Hence, find an expression for the maximum possible height of the column.

@@venugopalsharma1945 Yes, if the element is taken on the surface then it can be the case of biaxial loading. But you said.. ek element cylinder mein lu then, the whole concept is different. Anyways, I didn't mean to point out any mistake. You are making great videos.👍

I believe that the example of balloon inflation (rectangular element on the inside) for biaxial loading is not correct. However if we consider any section on the surface( square element on the surface) of balloon being inflated it will more accurately depict the example of biaxial loading.

yes you are absolutely correct but the thing is in thin section we generally considered the state of stress to be biaxial considering the various theories offailure even if you consider the state of stress of an element in inside surface as biaxial it wouldn't make a big difference in your calculations
