Same thing happened some years back when the lance mountain jordans came out. It was a basketball shoe made for skaters. Yet was bought out by all the streetwear people for fashion. A shoe which was designed to be worn and scuffed through skating was instead being scalped for four times the price for instagram pics. Sadly happens to every hobby and interest under the sun. Hopefully a good side effect will be once the dust settles and everybody has opened a bunch chasing shiny skateboards. The non chase decks will be easily obtained by the people who really want them for a reasonable price.

I've been talking about gatekeeping for a couple years now and i think a certain amount of it is needed...not for kids or noobs that really want to collect, but for scammers/flippers, etc. We have a duty, as long time collectors, to help new ppl get into the hobby, but at the same time...we have to keep the garbage out. These were always made for collectors. It’s part of the reason they sold these for $110 retail which almost double a regular board. At the end of the day it’s a great Pokémon product.

As someone that has Invested in limited edition bmx bikes and parts I second this. I paid well over regular retail price for brand new certain anniversary edition parts and knew what I was paying for. I see this situation very similarly. Although with collaborating with pokemon I can understand the secondary market markup. Pokemon is huge but I can probably expect these to maintain well over msrp but not in the thousands . It's a God damn deck that u can buy normally for 60 -70 dollars. I think at the end of the day they should come down to Maybe 150 dollars

Speaking as somebody who skated when they were a kid/teenager, the community was a lot harsher on the gatekeeping. Everybody was a poser blah blah blah. It’s a lot more positive these days but I’m not surprised there are some salty skaters though to be honest, there are always gonna be miserable people out there

My gf was getting a tattoo today, and one of the artists was opening one of these when we got there. Every community has its fair share of toxic people. You make a lot of good points. I just love my skate community and it bums me out to see these decks go to people who aren’t going to skate it one day. It is super interesting to see these two communities clash. Money is definitely the driving factor. If Santa Cruz wanted these to go to skaters, they would’ve created more due to the Pokémon community being so ruthless!😂

I've always felt that a certain amount of gatekeeping is nessecary to keep a hobbyist community healthy. I personally will avoid buying/selling cards or even interacting with people who dont have some kind of knowledge of pokemon. The less I csn contribute to someone hoarding things the better is how I see it

Yes, your are right. There is only 50 made total in the world of each gold. I expect the gold Charizard will be 6-10k. But as of now you can buy the sealed for 220 which isn’t that bad considering how limited the supply was made.

The real problem is the botting issues in the community. The ability for people to buy bots and then take product from ACTUAL people who want to buy them only to turn around and sell it for 3X the price is dumb. That is the REAL issue. A lot of these limited products can't even get into the hands of the people who genuinely want them because some basement dweller is salivating over their computer as all their bots mine sites for limited products. Causing whole sites to crash, people who genuinely want to buy product from Pokemon Center to be blocked and just so many issues in general.

When i got the boards i thought the hype was the opposite: went to the mall the morning they came-out, and there was one other guy. I got 2 boards from 2 different skateshops (because one per customer), and the Vans store only had a single one like it was a sample before the real shipment. I grabbed one from my local skate shop they only had 4, got Squirtle, it's very cute. The whole presentation with the foil wrapper and the Santa Cruz wrapping paper inside is top quality. Did say to the skate shop owner good job they didn't put a skateboarding Pikachu promo in there or there would have been a queue out the door.

Agree on the money gate, I don't expect to be able to own everything but I do think that 1) English product quality is held back by demand and profitability, further pushing Japanese demand 2) English collectors miss out on far too many exclusives, further pushing Japanese demand 3) a lot of the older JP exclusive cards I want should have been released by wotc (vending in Jamboree for example) or were not released because of wotc (VS series because of balance apparently), further pushing Japanese demand With demand prices soar. In the modern era aside from geography gated cards I don't see any reason for artificially language gated releases. Me and my wife got a little fun insta page going, she's getting into the cards, it's a good bit of fun and gotta remember that's why we're in the hobby in the first place. Same exact point can be made for Pokemon cards. They were never meant for adults to hoard/flip. They're fucking cartoons meant for kids to enjoy. Adults turned this into a shit pile that it is today. Decided to pick up a cool SV 'Jacq' card in PSA 100 hehe...seriously now, think the art work is awesome as it reminds me of my lazy/study days c1980s; our house did not have ac so on nice windy days we would open up the oversized windows (late 1880 homes usually had oversized/tall windows) to let the wind come flying through the house. And yes, even the curtains blew about just as they are doing here. Who wouldnt want to search their deck for 2 Evolution Pokemon?

As a skater and sneaker collector for the past 15+ years and same with Pokémon collecting…I don’t blame any scalpers etc…I blame Santa Cruz. They knew this would happen and decided to still make it crazy limited. They could’ve made mass market amounts and pleased everyone but they wanted all this attention! Santa Cruz as a brand is crap. They only ever sell the odd collabs they do and there normal product ends up in the sales! I don’t think a skater deserved this over a collector, no one DESERVES anything! It’s a luxury being able to even afford this stuff if we are being honest!

The skateboarding community isn’t new to this. Nike SB dunks. I love SB dunks for skating, they’re some of the most durable skate shoes out there, but 90 a pair is a little steep… But you can rarely find a pair for less than 150, thanks to scalpers and resellers.

Gatekeeping nonsense aside, Santa Cruz really blew this release. Decks were sold out to bots in less than 60 seconds. Most people like me had to hop from skate shop to skate shop to have a chance to pick up one for their collection, only to turn around and see some whatnot streamer auctioning cases for 4x and 5x retail tonight. I really hope that Santa Cruz does a restock so they can temper these absurd prices a little bit.

way i see it these things have just as many aspects that align it with the Pokémon collector community as they do with the skate bord community so neither should get priority over one another because they are clearly meant for both. if they were not then they would not put them in blind bags and make them in limited qualities with special variants. theirs plenty of pokemon skateboard decks out their that have little to nothing about them that is collectable that the skateboard community can easily get their hands on if that is what they want. only reason they are making a stink about these is because they are valuable and the only reason they are valuable is because of the collectors.
