They sound different on different rows because of the proximity of the keys to the mounting screws which affects the rigidity/flex of the area/row. That is why when you want to compare sound of switches, you must recognize these variables and change your methodology to make them directly comparable. So your back to back comparison should be per key or per exact sequence of keys. Eg you can compare the Enter key sound with switch A vs switch B. That is now a direct comparison. The difference in sound is now almost purely the switch and nothing else. Then move on to a different key. Do enough of that and you’ll likely notice a pattern or characteristic emerging.

Makes sense, but how is that useful in real life though? People type across multiple rows at once, right? 😅

Yep it also depends on the feel and pressure required to press the keys/switches!
@TheHopelessGeek
@TheHopelessGeek Жыл бұрын
Yes, but since these are operating at almost similar actuation pressure (5 gm difference), they're quite identical

Souds change from key to key while using the same switch us because of the distance of the key from the mounting points of the of the plate of the keyboard, that is why more expensive keyboards have something called as gasket mount, it helps to minimize the sound difference. Whereas Gat milky yellow and reds sound and feel different due to the different material used for the housing
@TheHopelessGeek
@TheHopelessGeek Жыл бұрын
Yes, but it's still not a reliable metric as there's no standard to compare it.🙂

Well I disagree, I'm using a gasket mount 😂 and every key produces a different sound.

OR ( and hear me out) I already *have* one of the switches listed here, and want to know what the other sounds like in comparison to know if it would be worth it to change one out for the other... sometimes its not so crazy complex dude

It may or may not be because of height difference, keyboards are tend to be smaller height in from and gets bigger as we go backwards, more space inside keyboard makes different sound. But i agree with your point that we can't judge switches with sound test only

True. Keyboard sizes make a difference too.
