Gatescarth pass April 2015 - Lake District, Cumbria, UK Green laning Land Rover Defender TD5 TDI

April 4th 2015 Land Rover Defenders TD5 and TDI take on the permit green lane Gatescarth nr HawesWater / Sadgill, Cumbria (Lake District), UK.
The lane is also known as BOAT 361002 / 548015 and is operated by LDNPA and GLASS.
With steep ascents and descents, our standard Land Rover Defenders struggled for grip even though the TD5 had brand new BF Goodrich Mud KM2 tyres.
We were the first 4x4s over the pass in 2015 and it showed, winter washout had made the gravel track very loose, it was like driving on steep climbs covered in marbles!
Hairpins with steep drops make this green lane, the most challenging and most demanding in the north west of the UK.

hi mate,we never got to do gatescarth due to the permits but iv had another look at your movie again and yep thats a strange one ?how did they get there ? pmsl.we all had an AWSOME time and did about 10/12 lanes over the weekend and totaly blew us away and would totaly recommend to anyone.[we went with yorkshire 4x4] and all got plans to do others with them.we have about 50 hrs of film to sort and make movies with so pls keep a lookout for them coming very soon . our next trip is at the end of june and off the brecon beacons ,wales then billing july and 2 week tour overland to the alps august then wessex in september plus many others being sorted.[all will be filmed and put on youtube for all to enjoy.fingers crossed mate ,we will meet up on our travels and have lots to chat about. p.s. pls keep your movies coming mate

+nigelsim18 Many thanks Nigel; a much better alternative to full closure. Here in Devon huge numbers of byways go unused by anyone and get overgrown but when 4x4 drivers use them (and mostly meet no-one on the way) it is frowned upon by ramblers who previously didn't know the lanes were there at all.

Hi Nigel. Great video. Would you say this pass is ok for less capable 4WD SUVs? We have a Jeep Renegade Trailhawk (20:1 crawler and hill descent). It didn't look too challenging for a landy.

Hi Paul. Right now at the time of writing this (Feb 2016) Gatescarth pass is shut after the bad winter storms and flooding caused a landslide. I'm sure when it re-opens your Jeep will be fine. Hi, we have permits for November, for planning purposes, can you tell me how long it takes to drive this lane?

I actually cut very little out of the video. The only thing we did do that I cut was to spend 10 minutes at the top having a chat to the marshals. Apart from that you can pretty much use the timing from the video. It takes a while to get to the start from the motorway, but your sat nav should give you a good idea about that. You'll love it, it's a great lane.
