It would be great to see Gateshead back in the EFL and it could happen. Mike Williamson has done a great job so far but it will be sometime before we’re good enough to be challenging at the top end of the National league.

Gateshead lost their league status in 1960 for two reasons. First of all, there was a greyhound track at the ground, which the FA did not approve of. Second, the Third Divisions North and South were reorganised in 1958 into the Third and Fourth Divisions. Many clubs thought that a trip to Peterborough (the replacement club) would be less of an expense than a trip to County Durham. The biggest insult was the fact that the two teams below Gateshead WERE re-elected. On the 1958 reorganisation, Gateshead missed out on the Third Division by a whisker. Now 64 years later, the club could not take part in the play-offs, because there is no ground security. The owners, Gateshead Borough Council, want to sell the ground, but cannot find a buyer.
