The Perfect Home For A Trash Panda

“Who needs Uber Eats when you live in a garbage bin?”
This mother raccoon was living inside a garbage bin at the front of a industrial building with many businesses inside, including a children’s daycare. When we approached the bin the mother lunged out at us, which proved to be very dangerous if anyone were to stick their hand inside to throw out their garbage.
We were able to safely remove the mother and discovered 6 babies living with her. We relocated the family as a whole to the ravine behind the building.
The mother and her babies were moved inside our heated reunion box, which allowed her to start relocating once she feet comfortable to do so.

Poor mama. She looked so concerned and worried and then so scared. Mama raccoons are fierce! They’re definitely good mamas. I’m glad the traumatic event has passed and hopefully she can be somewhere much safer with her babies. God forbid if she bit someone protecting those babies, we all know what would’ve likely happened. And with people sticking their hands right near the entrance of her home it’d only be a matter of time.

Here in Vermont this Spring they leveled about 2000 trees next to a highway exit for some future construction. We wandered around in there listening for crying babies and baby birds. Unfortunately we were too late. I wish there was a law only allowing trees to be cut down in the fall when they’re not full of babies.

I applaud you for how well you did this. Until recent health restraints, I live in the woods & have been feeding 30+ raccoons, 12 skunks, 8 opossums, a few fox, rabbits, umpteen squirrels (NEVER pull a squirrel's tail to get 'em off a birdfeeder, you'll pay for it the rest of your life, handed down by generations, they never forgive they never forget), 80+turkeys, 2 dozen deer .... etc. Today all I have left is a raccoon family in the roof. What the hell, I'm not using that space, let them use it. One raccoon in the past liked holding my hand while feeding on the pickinick table. And the only skunk I had to be careful of was "Lefty", tail broken to the left so I couldn't tell when he was upset. :-) Thought you might like the real-life "tail".

Racoons look far more gentle & much more docile than they actually are. They are pound for pound one of the most ferocious & incredibly powerful creatures on the planet for their size & weight. It's quite literally impossible for human beings to realize the massive difference between the sheer strength, speed, power & unbridled ferocity of a wild animal versus that of a domestic animal. There is literally no comparison at all. Domestic animals do not have a chance compared to a wild animal. There is simply no comparison. Racoons are extremely dangerous animals that can literally rip your dog to shreds in seconds & you with it, if you decide to intervene to try to save your dog's life. Do not attempt to pet or in any way handle a wild raccoon, as you can be severely injured so quickly you won't believe it. You can't react fast enough to save yourself. Plus racoons carry deadly microbes in there feces that will infect your brain & kill you. Basically, it's best to enjoy them from a distance & keep your pets & their food indoors & safe from racoons attacking them & stealing their food, as well as attacking them &/or infecting them with diseases, parasites, etc... Researching wildlife that visits your property with your dept of wildlife online is the wisest thing to do so you are aware of any risks to your pets, children & yourself, as well as your neighbors & guests these wonderful creatures that may frequently visit your property or may even maintain their den on your property & raise their young on your property. It's best to know all you can about the creatures w/whom you may share your land.

I don't see how this place was a safe spot for a momma raccoon with babies... especially dropping her off in the snow expecting her to move all of her babies out over night in unknown territory? It lacks common sense & compassion to place them in an area like that. Seriously... where is she supposed to take the babies, what safe spot to leave them while she searches for food? I don't see anything wrong with creating safe spaces or spots for them, the mommas with babies. If people see a problem with you suggesting a safe place, then they obviously lack compassion. If you remove an animal only to put them in a potential danger zone or unsafe place where the babies could be taken/eaten then you might as well put them all to sleep. Kept thinking feral cats were getting into my trashcan, one night when I couldn’t sleep, and was up late, I heard what sounded like an intruder on my porch, finally I got the courage to open the door and what I saw was two of the biggest, fattest raccoons in my trashcan. I started knocking on my door frame to scare them into leaving, they both turned around and looked at me like I was inconveniencing them, and went back to chewing open trash bags and eating. Then one had the nerve to take the long way off the porch and right past me! They were not bothered by my presence which indicated to me they are most likely comfortable around other humans. They were so big!!!!

I have had 3 successful bird rescues & they flew away after a night a finch & a black phoebe needed a break & a safe place to sleep to a crow I had for months & they all come back to visit me. I was presented an opportunity to work for a bird removal company but they killed the birds so there’s no way I would work for them. I would work for you!! I live in a village on the coast of California, with lots of wildlife even in the yard. Raccoons get such a bad rap! Raccoons, opossums, cats, and skunks get along well together, sometimes even sharing a bowl of food. They are pretty well habituated to humans. Tonight I saw the first baby raccoon of the summer out and about with his mom, so cute, like a little teapot. It's a special time for me to see the little ones learning from their moms and playing together. Thanks for a really great video. Keep up the good work.

Enjoy your retirement. 22 years is a good, long time to care for the animals in AZ. I hope you have someone younger and full of energy to take your place when you do decide to stop working. Thank you for the care you showed to this Mother Raccoon, she was so scared when you removed her from the bin. Cute babies, looked well fed. Momma seemed in good condition too. It is such a shame that their natural habitat is slowly disappearing. I so wish we had them in the UK.

So many scary options with them there. They could get got coffee thrown in on them, hot soup, chemicals, someone could get bit, someone could’ve pulled the trash can off, got startled, she took off, and they throw the trash out into a dumpster without even realizing. So many scary options.
