I was born and raised out in Alpine, so I grew up going to Big Bend my entire life. It was something that I took for granted, because it was something we did so often. Since moving away 8 years ago, I’ve grown more grateful for my old stomping grounds. Especially when I meet someone new and tell them where I’m from - seeing their face light up with excitement and curiosity. It was so refreshing to see BB from someone else’s perspective. It was like seeing it with a fresh set of eyes. This is the first video I’ve seen of yours - glad it was Big Bend.

The Lower Canyons of the Rio Grande are spectacular! In 1984 I spent a week canoeing the stretch of river between Big Bend and Del Rio. After day one which was mostly flat water , the remainder of the trip was through twisting canyons and incredibly beautiful landscapes. We found several hot springs along the river and soaking in them after a long day's paddle was wonderful. We hiked up several side canyons and one day climbed up Burro Bluff of the Mexican side. Nice to see that nearly 40 years later the river is still wild and clean . At my age now I doubt I'll be able to do that trip again so thanks for the excellent video, it brought back lots of memories!

I need to check out the remaining lower canyons! Santa Elena I’ve heard is one of many beautiful canyons along the border. Hot springs would be a great during winter! The river is wild and clean for sure. Thanks to all who have enjoyed it and kept it that way!

@@GatewoodBrown I'm curious as to how many other people you met while on that stretch of river? When we did our trip in 1984 there were 8 of us in 4 canoes and we only saw four other people during the 6 days we were on the river. We did the trip in mid March and the weather was ideal, low to mid 80's during the day and in the 50's at night.

So many free things to do. Florida only has a very limited amount of free fun things to do. Mr. Brown-great GREAT VIDEO!! The shots were epic and extremely artful. Nobody can touch your skills for outdoor cinematography. The southwest can offer up its own set of challenges! I was close to Truth or Consequences NM some years back. I was near a bone-dry arroyo on a blistering day when I heard a huge roar and saw dust rising violently on the horizon. I moved away from the arroyo and ravine only to see a wall of water come screaming through, pushing huge tree trunks and rocks with it. It had rained up in the mountains and this was it’s result, hundreds of miles south. It reminded me how dangerous low rivers and dry creeks in the southwest can be. I thought of that as I watched you wonder about the impending storm you might face. I faced a copperhead on my kayak/camp trip this weekend on the walnut. You faced a wasp on your trip and got stung. Never know what awaits one on a trip! Gotta be on the lookout all the damn time! I noticed your buddy Chuck was unusually subdued in the video only to find out that his boss was also in the trip! That explained it! Anyway-again-you and your ever changing crew keep me stoked! 2 guys just joined my crew after buying new kayaks last weekend. I have turned these boys on to your videos. Look for more comments from Kansans in the future! As always, my best to you and your crew! Stay safe!

Hey curt always fun to hear from you! Wow what a crazy story! I’ve watched desert flash floods and they’re pretty nuts. Just walks of water and debris out of nowhere. That’s what we were worried about here and it was strange, the water became extremely milky and very cold which was a stark difference from the previous day. I talked with Chuck about your comment and we both came to the consensus that we were mostly subdued because of how exhausting each day was! So much effort that by the time we were back at camp it was time to sit haha. Anyway great hearing from you!

I had the privilege of living and working inside Big Bend for over a year. I’ve visited many national parks, many of which were far more popular and prettier. Yet none of which made such an impact in my heart as Big Bend…there’s just something about that place. Funny thing is, I hated it the first month or so I was there. I wondered why it was a park at all, it seemed so dull to compared to other parks. But then I got to know it, its history, its people, THE NIGHT SKY, the sheer size, the absolute eccentricity of the nearby town, and just the stillness of it. I fell in love. By the time I left, I memorized every trail, and knew the park like the back of my hand. It will always be my cathedral, and I miss it dearly.

Wow So great to see the canyon again. I did a white water canoe trip through Big Bend in 1984. I was amazed at how many individual house sized rocks I recognized. The water on my trip was much higher and faster. We actually had to haul out and over boulders because of dangerous rapids. Our trip was in December. So glad you mentioned the night sky. It remains to this day the most amazing I’ve ever seen. Great trip guys. Keep on paddling.
@GatewoodBrown2 жыл бұрын
Ya know a lot of people have shared their account of paddling this river many decades ago and the resounding similarity is that the water was much higher. Really sad to hear how low it’s gotten over the years. Hopefully we return to historical norms soon
@doublediamondsdunn72872 жыл бұрын
@@GatewoodBrown I’m so sorry to hear that. It changes the experience so much. We started upstream quite a bit. It also rained on our group for three strait days. I was told to stay away from the walls because of the under cut in them. Now I can see them clearly. Still looks like paddling in chocolate milk. Thanks for sharing your stories. I don’t know if you’ve ever paddled the BWCA, but you should. It’s another once in a lifetime areas. I paddled from the Grand Portage all the way to Ely Minnesota.
@GatewoodBrown2 жыл бұрын
@@doublediamondsdunn7287 ahh that would make sense that flows were gushing after that much rain. Yeah it’s cool to see the river with low water so you can better understand the below surface treachery. BWCA is on my list!

@@GatewoodBrown not going to lie a hadn’t paddled in about 8 years and watching your videos last year pushed me back into paddling more. A friend and I did a 5 day trip in Canada down the reddeer river last year and it was one of the most peaceful moments being out on the water again and I wanna thank you for all of the knowledge your passing on.

We did from Lajitas to Boquillas on paddleboards (around 100 miles) a few years back. It was one of the most brutal trips we have made to date being that the water was around 15 CFS the entire time. Forced us to drag our SUPs for most of it. We ended up changing the expedition name from Stand On The Rio Grande to The SUP Assisted Hike, lol. Great video by the way, brought back amazing memories!
@GatewoodBrown2 жыл бұрын
My dude that is a wild trip! 15 cfs is hiking levels! Sup assisted hike sounds about right haha. Glad we were able to paddle on the way down. Thanks for the kind words my man!

Man I’m stoked you took the time to watch it! I appreciate the kind words, definitely stoked with how big the community is right now. Not the same ability to interact with everyone as channels grow but really taking it all in for now. Kayaking is pretty niche so I’m not sure if it’ll get that big. Rewarding none the less!

Gatewood, you have the best channel on KZbin, a taste of the wonder of life, and inspiration to get out and take a bite! Keep the videos coming brother! Your channel inspired us to try kayaking as a family, myself, my wife, son 11, daughter 8. We boomeranged the end of this last Winter and the water was even lower, spent the whole day dragging two inflatables from the boat ramp to the first picnic area, though we'll never do it again with the level so low the canyon was stunning and I hope we return someday with better flow. Closed Canyon hike from the upper end of the canyon is also a beautiful hike.

Thank you so much for the kind words Richard! Sounds like you guys did the same struggle path that we did haha. Fortunately the sights make it all worth it like you said. Very cool to hear you were out there with the family. I hope to do that with my future family one day!

@@GatewoodBrown You definitely should. The very best memories of my childhood were family road trips and camping trips, we're trying to do that for our kids now, and I can't begin to place a value on the time spent as a family. Worth every penny, every challenge, and every sore muscle. 🙂
