It's great that you guys across the pond keep these old warbirds flying but please, please check your facts, the Mosquito's top speed was 360 mph at 19500 ft, not 280mph. I just wish we could get these sort of shows over here, but they are so heavily restricted now and expensive.

Alan Jones My grandfather used to drive the crews to and from their aircraft (and also doubled as an ambulance driver) on various bomber fields during the war. I wonder if they ever crossed paths.
@susieq98017 жыл бұрын
Alan Jones - My father flew Mossies - 410 RCAF. I was honoured to meet Russ Bannock from the 418 RCAF Squadron and, to my knowledge, one of if not THE most decorated Canadian airmen of the war. That was a few years ago (2012?) when the Mosquito (the only airworthy one at the time) was at the Hamilton, Ontario airshow. A humble, true gentleman. They had a special day for Mossie crews and their families the day before the show. Sadly my father had died before seeing that but a few who were there remembered him. I did shed a few tears seeing the flight of the Mynarski Lanc and the Mossie with 2 Spitfires and 2 Hawker Hurricanes since I never thought I would ever see a Mossie fly. I lost 4 cousins in WW2, one on convoy duty, one in France in the month after D-day and two in Holland. Thank you to YOUR father and all crews, Halifaxes, Wellingtons, Lancs, Spits, Hurricanes and others. Also thanks to the ground crews like Blues Man's grandfather. All were important. A great older book, if you can find it, is "Terror in the Starboard Seat" about a Mosquito crew, both funny and sad and written by a Canadian Mossie navigator about their true experiences. His pilot was a Jewish American who joined the RCAF.

There are two lancasters that can fly at the time of writing this. The one in the video was built and lives in Canada. The other still belongs to the Royal Airforce and is part of the battle.of Britain memorial flight. However there is a 3rd Lancaster called 'just Jain' based a East Kirby in Linconshire, England, it is able to do fast taxi and funds are being raised to get her back into the sky.

in terms of cost in crew lives lost versus effective bombing the mosquito was the best. Compared to the B17 it had a similar bomb load over medium range.
@richardharrold97368 жыл бұрын
Yup. B17 load with a fifth of the crew at double the speed.
@MrDaiseymay8 жыл бұрын
But fat-arse loved it also, he is attributed to have said, trust the British to make a beautiful aircraft , made by piano makers.
@raymondperrault58217 жыл бұрын
That's not entirely true. The B-17 would carry 4000lb on a Berlin mission, but could do 6000lb on a medium range mission. The mosquito was originally designed with a 2000lb capability in mind, but with modified, bulging bomb bay doors it could carry the 4000lb "cookie" bomb all the way to Berlin.
@MrDaiseymay7 жыл бұрын
the operative words are carry, and comparatively, Besides, it depends on the mission. One important target ? use the Mosquito, several targets over a wider area---the B17.

soaringtractor welllll, the fighter- bomber version carried X4 20mm cannon and machine guns, after it dropped its load....what do you think it could do if it had to?
@raymondperrault58217 жыл бұрын
Here's what it could do if it had to: The FB Mk VI proved capable of holding its own with single-engine fighter aircraft in addition to bombing. For example, on 15 January 1945 Mosquito FB Mk VIs of 143 Squadron were engaged by 30 Focke-Wulf Fw 190s from Jagdgeschwader 5: nonetheless, the Mosquitos sank an armed trawler and two merchant ships, losing five Mosquitos (two to flak)[132] but shooting down five Fw 190s.[133]

...ahhh ...the B-25....how surprised I was when, as a younger chap, I got hear a Mitchell, after all the WW11 movies I had seen...and realized how "clunky and clattery" they sounded...I 'spose that's because of the radials....
@whalesong9998 жыл бұрын
They do have a different "cackle" sound to them. It was the way the exhaust manifolds were made and routed. Short, flame reducing ex. pipes were fitted on some cylinders while a few others went to a collector ring and the sound is quite unique. I rode inside one during a display in NE in the early '80s. The interior noise was deafening, had to use protective earmuffs with speakers to withstand the sound.
@bluesrocker918 жыл бұрын
whalesong999 I love watching these old warbirds take off at night, with jets of flame streaming out of the exhausts.

+The Paranoid Blues Man - When I was a boy, flights of recip airliners would leave the airports in Wichita and head out over our farm toward K.C. Very noticeable blue exhaust glow from each nacelle and quite a nice sound too. I think their altitude by then was about 5000'.
@bluesrocker918 жыл бұрын
whalesong999 Of course that was a dead giveaway to night fighters. In fact I think it was such a problem for the Halifax bombers that it had to be heavily modified.

Mosquito was a strike fighter/attacker not bomber
@daniellastuart31456 жыл бұрын
Originally conceived as an unarmed fast bomber, the Mosquito was adapted to roles including low to medium-altitude daytime tactical bomber, high-altitude night bomber, pathfinder, day or night fighter, fighter-bomber, intruder, maritime strike aircraft, and fast photo-reconnaissance aircraft. It was also used by the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) as a fast transport to carry small high-value cargoes to, and from, neutral countries, through enemy-controlled airspace. A single passenger could ride in the aircraft's bomb bay when it was adapted for the purpose
